There has also been at least one TV series/game pair where the game was just as canon as the show: Defiance.
Except the TV series was tied into the MMO from the start for Defiance. So there was no problem of trying to integrate the canon like the almost impossible task of STO and Picard. We would have to wait for STO 2 and a new Star Trek series for Star Trek being able to do that.
I for one would not want another Defiance. It was innovative but niche for its time with the idea of synchronization between a TV show on SciFi (not Syfy for me) and a MMO. As for STO and Picard only Cryptic knows what they are going to do. I still do not see a problem.
Ok, here's one definitive way in which STP directly contradicts STO in a way that could only be reconciled by either retconning STO or making STO a separate universe/timeline (as it probably should be): Hugh. Back in December they revealed his STP appearance:
well, they already altered seven's appearance, so i expect them to do the same for hugh - it still isn't an insurmountable alteration, especially since hugh only shows up in one or two places
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
Passion and Serenity are one.
I gain power by understanding both.
In the chaos of their battle, I bring order.
I am a shadow, darkness born from light.
The Force is united within me.

Actually, the change in appearance could be very easily explained by saying that he was on one of the ships being re-assimilated, got away at the last second before it would have completed, and has not gotten around to getting the extraneous hardware removed again yet.
