So giving people the ability to actually name their alien species outside of the bio would probably make people feel cheated for spending money on a cross faction species.
Not if they restrict you from using already available species names.
Well... I guess we'll be seeing a lot more Ballchinians then.

Well, that is one alternative to selling rename tokens alongside Captain rename tokens. Though hopefully just restricting the names of the ones that you can get from the C-Store, not the ones you get for free.
definitely need more aliengen options and parts...at the very least,t he ability to remove mouths completely - not all aliens are so primitive that they need to use...'orifices' to speak

I suppose that could be a concern, since you could make a Klingon for free. Putting the race rename in the C-Store could be a possible way to cover that, either as a single purchase or a cheaper one-use option.
Don't C-Store ones also have race-exclusive traits the Aliens don't, though? I haven't used one for a long time.
You can make duplicates of most races with alien. Caitian/Ferasans are obvious exceptions. But, a duplicate of an Andorian doesn't have the ground trait they do.
The problem I see with this is people using it as a way to circumvent faction restrictions more than they can now. I mean I do admit one of my older Fed Engie characters is a phOrion, but if we give people the ability to NAME the species... we'll have Fed Orions, KDF Humans... might as well just do away with species restrictions at that point.
Because one word of text in an infobox most players never open once is the one part of a canon species everyone really wants, yes? We already have Fed orions, KDF humans, etc. And yes, they might as well do away with species restrictions anyway, they're stupid.
No, the only actual problem would be that overriding the species in the info box would be removing useful data from it and replacing it with fiction. As already said, there is a separate field for players to type whatever they want, where it doesn't interfere with the factual information about the character.
The fact that it would be possible to name your alien race and then name the alien is not a non-issue. As was brought up a number of times now by different people, it's avoided in order to avoid lawsuits from far larger companies (Disney owns Star Wars and Marvel now... that's a wallet you just don't win against. Not to mention the plethora of movie studios who still control the rights to their respective franchises.)
If you really want to name your alien by it's species then there's really nothing stopping you though that's really skirting things, but when you can register it as from that species then you're no longer skirting the issue and are bold-facedly challenging the copyright and trademark of that species. If the companies were to ask Cryptic to remove the offending character they'd have no choice in the matter and... you'd likely be out a character if not the account outright.

That's nonsense though, because all Cryptic need to do, is prevent non Trek alien names from being entered. That system is already in place with ships and names. I wasn't able to call a Bajoran 'Li'. I even once had some mundane ship name blocked by the system. I can't remember what it was, but something Really Basic, like 'Constant' or 'Monitor', so I figured 'Probably a ship which will be in Discovery', but never thought to note it down for reference. So the system is literally already in place to prevent someone using an unallowed name, so that completely resolves the issue of a named IP infringement

Yes a simple text filter/block on names could be used. I mean i doubt Disney or whoever is gonna come knocking if you have some really obscure names used but for the big major ones from the biggest films/shows you just block them.
Same way you cannot have a USS Enterprise or USS Reliant.
If someone did take offense at a species name then i'm sure it's just a case of them changing it to a default for a player, messaging them and then blocking that name from being used again.
But heck, i don't see it being an issue, you can now use numerous real world names and likenesses to create toons, some extremely good looking. You don't see lawsuit rolling in when someone calls their toon Trump do you?

Precisely, I not only can't see the harm that opening the facility itself would do, but cryptic literally already have 'name blocks' in place anyway (and a profanity filter) so the claim that it could lead to trouble, is completely baseless

Disney or whoever aren't going to care. There already is a text box where players can type in a custom species name if they want and nobody cares. People are, as usual, justifying their opinions with made-up stuff.
Personally, if the custom name didn't remove the actual character parameter, I wouldn't mind it saying "Alien (whatever)" or something. However, as there already is a freely usable custom text field, it would be dev work for no gain.

Wouldn't that defeat the point of renaming them, though? If someone does that, it's quite likely because they want to be rid of the 'Alien' part that's cramping their style.

Sucks to be them, then. Removing actual useful data in favor of user fiction is not acceptable.

My biggest complaint is that Romulan aliens barely have half of the alien options Federation and Klingons have. A kaminoan would have have looked great in a warbird. T,T
You have a large free-text field in the character sheet to type whatever custom details you want.
There is no reason overwrite factual in-game information with user text, when they can both be displayed together already.
It's what I do for my Alien toons. Heck, my first KDF toon was a Human turncoat, just labeled as Alien. Same for my Romulan Tal Shiar traitor, made well before romulan side was around.

That's a whole 'nother problem. At one point in Rom development, the devs were apparently planning to make aliens for Roms special somehow. they referred to them a "hybrids". but... that idea seems to have gotten dropped during development. Also they mentioned making them only open to subscribers and LTS.
But what actually makes them special? Well, apparently choosing a faction actually changes the set of options for alien customization. I know the min/max height changes, but I'm not sure about other options. Obviously, costumes, but those are supposed to change.

That's the biggest factor in all this, copyright infringements -You all remember what happened with Champions Online. Marvel Studios wasn't to happy.

Toon bios
Ship names
Boff names
Boff bios
Fleet names
Fleet recruiting messages
Armada names
etc...
Must be a prude's nightmare, all the places in STO where someone could type "balls."
