I don't think racially charged or crude species names would even matter in this case, because the only time you can see your species name mentioned is in a few mission dialogues, which you, and only you, can see. On the off chance you're playing a mission with someone sufficiently random and unacquainted as to even complain about what you might have entered, he cannot see it, the NPC will call him by HIS species name.
I would think that most people are the only one to see their own character/ship name the majority of the time. That still doesn't mean that reported "colorful" character or ship names are not changed by GMs.
GM's changing people's names because someone else thought them too interesting is/would be the pinnacle of lameness.
My biggest complaint is that Romulan aliens barely have half of the alien options Federation and Klingons have. A kaminoan would have have looked great in a warbird. T,T
That's a whole 'nother problem. At one point in Rom development, the devs were apparently planning to make aliens for Roms special somehow. they referred to them a "hybrids". but... that idea seems to have gotten dropped during development. Also they mentioned making them only open to subscribers and LTS.
But what actually makes them special? Well, apparently choosing a faction actually changes the set of options for alien customization. I know the min/max height changes, but I'm not sure about other options. Obviously, costumes, but those are supposed to change.
I don't know, certainly my rAlien has all the options I've wanted to use (except a tail, but that's not on any Alien). The biggest difference is of courrse that rAliens have the option of the best hairstyle in the game, that for some reason is romulans-only.
