@garaks31 That video is confirmed bollocks. Every time it's reposted it's been laughed at.
The first part is fine. They even show the articles they report on. The quotes from Alex Kurtzman and Sonequa Martin-Green are accurate.
The second half goes off the deep end, which oddly starts before the "rumors". The crazy starts when they assert Star Trek: Discovery is made on the "Paramount/Bad Robot license".
@artan42 sure, feel free to direct anything you wish to know at me. It's probably true that Transformers is best in it's third season which starts with the cinematic 1986 movie followed by the five-parter "Five faces of darkness" - I feel this is when it gained most of it's depth (which is of course relative in a cartoon about toys but meh ). Season 2 and especially 1 were pretty disjunkt and episodic. S3 even became a bit political, containing a incredibly offensive returning spoof of Muammar Gaddafi...
@angrytarg Say I wanted to watch the show(s) How do the various shows relate to each other? I've seen Beast Wars many moons ago and saw the live action films (and got confused into thinking the Gorilla and the big red truck were the same guy) but that's all I know.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

I should probably answer this via PMs as even though this topic pretty much ran it's course it'd be very rude to go on like this

Depends on if you mean the Japanese or English version. It was localized more than dubbed, and things changed a bit. Either way, there's a wiki for that: http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
so? You have a skewed concept of what a "fan" is. Well, very different from what the studio uses anyways.
When citing opinion pieces (and reviews are nothing BUT opinion pieces, as is most of 'entertainment' reporting) it's useful to have a baseline that shows the publication or author's biases.
The closest baseline we've got wrt "The Hollywood Reporter" and Star Trek product would be the reviews they gave of the 3 most recent movies (because we don't h ave access to their reviews of older movies, since those didn't go up in the website, being as they predate it by quite some time.)
People around HERE (the audience for this forum) have a fairly high percentage of posters who use "JJtrek" in some form or another as a slur or slang term for Star Trek they don't like.
Citing the hollywood reporter as a basis to communicate 'fan' reaction, then, has to take into account THR's editorial biases in reviews of hte most similar product...which given we don't HAVE an alternative Star Trek to compare it to, we're stuck looking at their review of the three recent movies to determine THEIR perception bias.
savvy that?
So? What does that have to do with the target audience that CBS is aiming for when producing Discovery?
New Coke isn't a good comparison. Foodservice is a lot less creative simply because it's possible to do the equivalent of making a single episode and replaying it endlessly, and still make a profit. no one would even think about trying that with a TV show.
It's like the Rules of Acquisition say: Expand or Die.
And really, the "controversy" seems to be about the same scale as the one about TNG... and we all know where that ended up. Some people said it ruined Star Trek forever.... they seem to have been in the minority. Some people hate it and rage on the internet, but a "huge chunk"? not likely.
You left out the #1 thing that was done right: they made it look cool. All your bluster about the "target audience" is too narrowly focused. CBS isn't aiming for a specific group. Making it look like TOS probably would reduce the number of people who watch it. As would making it look like KT-Trek. Instead they're doing the same thing they did before, making a TV show that looks cool. Is it cool enough to be profitable? Only time can say for sure.

I also refer to all other Trek as "old busted Trek".
I hold all Trek with an equivalent level of distain
as I said before, ST:D is going to have be better than:
Game of Thrones
Walking Dead
Breaking Bad
and the Galactica Reboot's first three seasons
before it's likely to silence the critics and start making money.
IIRC the way Les Moonves described the deal with Netflix, production of the show was already paid for and then some.
I just hope it doesn't drag Netflix down if it fails. Truth be said CBS needs Netflix more then Netflix needs CBS.
It won't. Netflix is pretty robust in it's programing and even content creation so it will be fine. If it fails however, I suspect that netflix won't be working with CBS ever again.
Well, two things:
1) Netflix is in debt, though that might be mostly due to a growth-focused strategy (but that might reach its end)
2) Netflix will not make the failure of a single show halt all dealings with a potential partner. It is more likely they will just say: "No more attempts to make new Star Trek shows".
The latter would probably be also something that CBS might decide. At least for a few years or decades.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
presumably by investors who want to make their money back. that it's already been financed and paid for just means that it's guaranteed however many episodes they shot this season, will be paid for, regardless of how it does with an audience. CBS' risk is pretty low-at worst, it could hamper growth of their pay-service if it bombs, most likely the impact will be negligible, and the production costs eaten by someone else.
Looks like CBS is investing to build their digital streaming service.

The first project, currently titled “Strange Angel,” is a drama series created by Mark Heyman and based on George Pendle’s book of the same name. It explores the real life of Jack Parsons, a man in 1940s Los Angeles who helped pioneer the field of American rocketry, and by night is a performer of sex magick rituals and a disciple to occultist Aleister Crowley.

All the money Netflix spent going international is mind boggling.
There are stories from the Star Trek series that I enjoy. Some themes that I find intriguing. I don't take it seriously as the quality of writing varies from episode to episode, from show to show. Yet, I hold the series overall in high enough regard to put Star Trek in italics every time.
Writers with different "goals" produce vastly differing content within a series. Some episodes are "world building", technology. themes and races that persist throughout the series. Some episodes focus entirely on the story, most of the fantastic elements introduced are jettisoned before the next episode. This slap-dash approach to Star Trek is why you have such a diverse fanbase. Some are interested in the themes and story while others get immersed in the universe itself.
Whether Star Trek: Discovery is Prime or "Kelvin" is irrelevant. Star Trek: Discovery is unlike any series that has come before it.
It is definitely being done in a different way than it has been done before. It’s going to be very cinematic, very high production value, and grittier, the way a lot of premium cable shows are today. That’s definitely the approach that the team has taken.
how do you preserve and protect what Starfleet is in the weight of challenge like war and the things that have to be done in war is a very interesting and dramatic problem
this particular universe is a particular dark time for the Federation and for Starfleet with this war...I don’t think it would be appropriate in the universe to have as many jolly wackadoo episodes that were often in The Original Series and The Next Generation
It’s very different from other Star Trek shows; there’s a lot more emotional and personal interaction than plot... there’s a layered story that you aren’t used to in Star Trek.
One of the first reveals about the "new/old" universe was an alien who could sense death. Coupled with writer interviews where they gleefully discuss their formula for determining "when to kill off a cast member" with dark grim trailers and you start to get the feeling this Grimdark Trek is an entirely new beast.
I'm sorry...but you seriously think what you just said is a GOOD thing?!?
I make no judgement values on Star Trek: Discovery. I stated that I perceive the the thread topic to be pointless. Then listed quotes from cast members, writers, and executives stating why I have that perception.
I have not seen Star Trek: Discovery, so I cannot say if the show is good or bad. It claims to drastically deviate from established themes and tone, so I am ambivalent about it. I will likely binge watch the first season when it finishes, but I am not certain I will watch the two "pilot episodes" that will air on CBS's public station. The show has gone through several creative revisions and I am not certain two episodes will be enough for me to form a fair opinion of Star Trek: Discovery.
Why is everybody under the impression there will no other way to watch the show without the CBS thing or Netflix?
