NWS: KOBAYASHI MARU EVENT REWARD THREAD

baddmoonrizinbaddmoonrizin Member Posts: 11,007 Community Moderator
There have been several threads popping up about the PROLONGED ENGAGEMENT PHASER BEAM ARRAY/DUAL CANNONS, so I'm consolidating them all here. This thread is not about the event itself, but questions and answers regarding the awarded weapon(s).

Will it be available in TOS classic Blue with classic phaser sounds and what are the specs??

    Thanks!

It's almost guaranteed to have a unique color and sound, forcing people like me who cringe at the sight of non-uniform weapons to drop it in the bank and forget it exists.

Thanks - I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. It would be nice if we could choose our own details similar to when you get certain lock box items...

Eh... maybe its firing on a different frequency than other phasers. I mean we did see the Enterprise-D cycle through various colors when caught by a Borg Cube.

Rotating frequencies that beam color always looked kind of muddled washed out as far as looks went it didn't look to good.

I always wondered - why did they change the color from blue to orange ?
  • legendarylycan#5411 legendarylycan Member Posts: 37,284 Arc User
different method of focusing the particles into a cohesive beam, maybe

the same way the color of energy weapon in star wars legends depended on the type of gas used in them

that's in-universe, though - if you want out-of-universe, probably because orange FX was easier to produce or something like that

The more pressing question is, why will it be a beam array or a dual cannon again? Why can't we choose one out of all the types to fit our playstyle?

I would not mind that, or just making it that these type of unique weapons ((like ones from specifi missions, reps, and such) had a mode-change mechanic to them. Allowing it that you could switch the beam version between a beam array setting/mode and a dual beam bank setting/mode, and similarly for the cannon giving it either a single setting/mode an a dual/dual heavy cannon mode/setting. Doing that would give you so much more verity in what you could slot them into build wise, as well as most likely you would merely need to make it that mode-switching would only change the stats of the weapon between two set stat-lines (this would also be able to possibly be retro-actively done the prior unique weapons to make them more versatile in build choices).

Though I would love to be able to have a visual weapon/torp/mine slot, or even a drop-down menu choice that has all weapons of the same weapon an/or energy type share a visual/color look as the chosen weapon.

Well... by giving us both a beam array and dual cannon, they do sorta cater to both schools of space combat. Beam array for the beam builds and dual cannons for the escort/raider cannon builds. May not be a dual heavy, but honestly I don't see a problem with using at least one dual. For example on a ship like the Negh'Tev or Mat'ha... having one dual cannon visually looks better as your ship is firing all four forward cannon hardpoints. For the Mat'ha, the dual heavies fire from the cannons on the pylons and the duals fire from the cannons on the nose. Negh'Tev fires from the wingtips in front of the ramscoops and the weapon pods under the wings.

except thanks to their oh-so 'wonderful' rebalance, dual cannons have been rendered inferior to dual heavies in literally EVERY way by removal of all per-shot mechanics and TRIBBLE up of firing cycles (the same two changes that destroyed turret builds), especially after they fixed the bug with the innate severity on DHCs not applying

It ignores DBB builds, turret builds and omni-beam dependant builds though. There is literally no reason for the arbitrary restriction to two "mainstream schools" and taking away the flexibility of unconventional builds.

It will be available in whatever color and sound effect Cryptic put in it. No weapon has selectable FX.

There is no arbitrary restriction. You are free to not use these weapons if you want to use something else instead.

IMO they should stop offering a choice between cannons and beams at all and go back to every special weapon being one of a kind, because giving people two choices just encourages them to demand ever more. They're never going to put 6 weapons in the event reward just so everyone can have their favorite type.

I suppose it could give one random type weapon each time you complete it...then you'd have to run the event multiple times if you didn't get what you want (and people might want multiple copies of space weapons anyway). But since STO doesn't rerun these rewards, that wouldn't really work either. People would run the event for the duration, not get what they want and never get chance to continue trying.

I disagree. Arbitrarily restricting things like a reward weapon type doesn't benefit anyone. A wider appeal means wider interest from the player base. It slipped by me at first that this is a dual cannon, not a dual heavy cannon. What possible reason is there for that? Do they just flip coins/roll dice/pull numbers out of a hat to decide these things?
  • lopequillopequil Member Posts: 1,226 Arc User
Fed world problems. I'll do the event on my Klingon main for fun but not interested in a phaser reward and I don't fancy doing it on alts as well for a mismatched single weapon.

I'd be in favor of including all energy types, too.

I would even support applying this change to reputation gear. Make them all available in whatever weapon type and energy type serves your build.
  • postagepaidpostagepaid Member Posts: 2,899 Arc User
If it was just a cannon then the number of beam users doing the event would drop significantly.

Likewise just a beam would reduce the number of cannon ships. Maybe less of an issue as they are often the 5secs and its over variety.

As for colours wonder why they don't add a weapon slot into the cosmetic thing under shield, deflector and engine that unifies the colour and noise by what ever is placed in but doesn't go so far as to morph beams into pulse or the kt spitters.

If they're not, then they should start.

Yeah, I bet you would. Fortunately, the odds of Cryptic giving 36 weapons from one event run is less than zero.

Giving 2 is already twice as many as any other similar event ever.

@warpangel Not 36, 6. Two each of phaser, disruptor and plasma. Those are the standard types that cover all player factions.

All weapon rewards should be uber class with it being a single cannon... single cannons get no love at all... perfect weapon to give out to folks, just make em a must have item and wreck everyone's build.

No, there are 6 energy types. Multiplied by 6 weapon types that's 36.

If you can't see how stupidly, ridiculously excessive it would be to reward 36 special weapons for participating in (not winning) 3 runs of an event queue (12 weapons per run) just from the numbers, nothing I could say will make a difference.

I don't see it being claimable on other toons, but the gear is "Bound to Account on Pickup" in description, so you can shift it between characters on account (by Account Shared Bank).

I checked and the weekend event timer ( that control if you get a voucher or not ) is shared amonst all toons.

So if you get the Voucher on toon A, you cannot get it on toon B until 20 hours later...

SO it looks like you need to play on toon A until you get it I think .

then either pass via account bank or maybe re-claim it somehow??

Sompek reward was account unlock and this one looks to use the same tokens, so I'd guess it's account unlock. Would be nice if things like this were actually told somewhere, though.
