I mean, unless you join a map and suddenly realize that Chipotle's Revenge is about to happen, you should NOT be away from your keyboard.
I've had that happen before...but my favorite was the cops showing up at my door because of an escaped convinct in the area. Can't really tell the cops "sorry officers, I can't help you because I have to go play a game". Not only that, but I really don't want to have an escaped convict running around where I live so I do really want to help them best I can.
Yep, I have been in a similar situation. I queued up CCA and in the middle of the map transfer there as a knock on my door. I opened it and there were two police officers standing right there. Apparently, my neighbor's apartment was broken into and robbed. No one was in the apartment so no one was hurt. They asked me a few questions, but I had not seen or heard anything. I am glad I have a Mul-T-Lock in my door; those things are expensive though.
Anyway, I went back to my computer to find out that I was rewarded with an AKF penalty.
Ridiculous? What did you expect with Abbott and Costello crashing the party.

In a way I had a worse experience with the AFK penalty. One of my builds got ruined by it as I built a ship around support. Everything was about boosting the teams damage and helping the team from bridge powers that cause me to teleport to people under 10% life and make them immune to damage, hanger pets are the heal type. But clearly the game doesn't like team work as every time I use that build I get an AFK penalty despite massively helping the team.

This is simply not true. Teamwork has been the key factor to all records this game has ever seen. Let it be DPS records with absurd numbers or two-man no win scenario wins.
The problem is that 9/10 self-declared tanks don’t tank but rather bring turtles to a match, 9/10 crowd controller don’t control but just disturb the run and 9/10 healer keep on being at the wrong place at the wrong time not healing anything unless some GDF can be ruined somewhere.
In any case neither of those described roles are any reason not to dish out enough DPS oneself to avoid AFK penalties. I know because I play tanks, crowd controller and support and never got a single one.
If you keep on having trouble just launch a single carrier pet and you should avoid a pen under current conditions.

I've gotten AFK penalty only once as far as I can remember and that was in ground map that isn't really great for engineers and I was chatting in "fleet chat" at same time and as Pete can tell you I don't exactly play a massive DPS build either.

Mike and I parsed most of your runs the past two weeks. With the current setup on your engineering toon I doubt you ever get a pen again even if you happen to chat half the match.

What this game needs is a new ship - a Science Crusier. One that can close Rifts and Power up the Station quickly. Then our AFK brethren can contribute double to the Mission.

Closing rifts faster and allowing the station to defend itself so that fewer ships show up? Fool, now the AFK crowd is gonna reinterprete the mirror invaders from warmongering attackers you have to stay proud and pacifist against to have the moral high ground to innocents who have every right to enter our universe.
I love the event, if only for the massive amount of killing my toons can do. Especially my main Fed Tac and her T6 Akira built to be nearly like the torpedo boat ship of canon as well as the front line combat ship of Star Trek: Armada. She can spit out so many photon torpedoes it's unreal. And fun. So many targets!
I still think the best solution is for the people who want to focus on getting all the optionals to do premades with like minded people.
Hey, stop trying to talk sense to people. You should know by now it doesn't work.
I half-agree with him, though to be fair and not one-sided, the best solution would be to do that AND for the people who want to be lazy or have personal reasons on aiming to get none of the optionals and not contribute to do premades with like-minded people.
This way, this leaves the people who wish not to be afk or do nothing, but also don't mind losing even 1 point of the base to go in PUG and have a good time away from the minority of perfectionist people and those who want to do nothing.
You didn't really use the word 'sense' in that context now did you?

A little minority of people already tried to argue not doing anything is common sense and the moral high ground and those who disagree are wrong and bad people against Gandhi's teachings, so I wouldn't be surprised if the answer is indeed positive.

I wasn’t talking about tanks and it is true. I was talking about a support build I had that was 100% focused on team work and boosting allies instead of myself but the AFK penalty ruined the build and stopped me playing team support. Have you ever gone full support where every bridge power you can get away with is aimed at allies instead of yourself?
the build had everything from spending skill points that don’t boost me but my team mates. To taking bridge powers that boost allies instead of me like Con Firepower, Overwhelm Emitters, Ambush Marker, Focused Assaults all of which boost team mates damage instead of my own. All my tactical, all sci and some ENG powers boosted the teammates not my own weapons.
As for tanking and being in the wrong place that’s why I use Subspace Interception it teleport me to an team mate under 50% health and makes them untargetable so it doesn’t ruin GDF and it gets around the position problem.
But you know what I got constantly shouted at by people like you saying I wasn’t doing enough even though I was contributing a lot and the game punished me with the AFK penalty so I stopped playing team support.
Tanks get away without the AFK penalty as you can have tactical powers dealing DPS. Support builds have those tactical powers boosting the team so you do less DPS then tank builds even though you are boosting the teams DPS more then what the tank does.
Some people say everyone should struggle diligently to get all the optionals, some people say no one should ever bother with any of them.
Maybe the truth is in the middle and people should just do what they feel.
Like I said before, the solution is compromise, and the compromise is for people never to complain about others in PUGs again, relying on premades if they expect others to do what they want.
Yeah -if you want to complete all objectives or you want all players to act the way you want them to or how you believe they should than do a private match with friends or like minded players. When I join a pug I know the chance of getting all objectives is pretty slim and of succeeding the mission, depending on difficulty, is always in question.
The only valid assumption concerning the players in a pug is that they exist.
That's not a given either, as you've discovered. The only valid assumption concerning the players in a PUG is that YOU exist. I pug, therefore, I am.
Or perhaps, the valid assumption is that the game thinks the players exist, since it starts the game.
Yes, there goes an explanation for all the joined-left-joined-left spam...maybe they're players that don't actually exist, but the game thinks they exist so tries to put them on the team.

Alright, take CCA. You decide you don't care for the Optionals about not getting more than 30% of the ships destroyed during either of the Pulses or to kill the Entity within 5 minutes. So you sit within range and get blown up each Pulse, or you shoot so feebly that you don't take it down in less than 5 minutes.
Of course we can expect incoming hooey about not wanting to commit violence on the Entity for consciences' sake, and getting blown up is small price to pay for peace of mind, blah, blah, blah.
Same baloney, another day.

Yep, I have been in a similar situation. I queued up CCA and in the middle of the map transfer there as a knock on my door. I opened it and there were two police officers standing right there. Usually. I have once been in a pug CSA with nobody else in it...I can only guess everyone else quit or DCed before I was out the loading screen.
Woops, too late.
