EVE is going free to play

agoogleuseragoogleuser Member Posts: 211 Arc User
So, I don't know if you heard about this, but EVE, a very, very, very huge game in the MMORPG world (I mean this thing is big, it’s been around for 13 years, that's more than double of STO [sort of] and everyone has seen it, heard of it, or tried it) is going free to play.
I wonder if this will effect STO. I mean they're going on XBOX and PS4, they've had 2 expansions (I'm NOT calling Agents of Yesteryear an expansion or Agents of Yesterday, good content but in no way is it an expansion... but I'm getting off topic.) But STO is still rather small, and relatively good, but it is completely possible that something like EVE can come and dominate the market.

Oh, don't get too excited, it sounds kind of like the SWTOR free to play. I mean, say whatever you want, but you truly can play STO for free, you just need a bunch of time.

I have been in all of those 3 MMOs. Each one has it own unique flavor. STO is lagging far behind in graphics and content but a good F2P model. Eve will draw lots of new SCI FI players into it. It is more addictive than STO and now free. At least in the short term it is a great move for EVE and a better for MMO playerbase.

Hehe... I remember EvE... Made it out of the beginners zone, got blown up...

    Never entered again.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

I'm not a PVP guy, and everything I read about Eve makes me not want to play it.

Griefing is celebrated, including real-money frauds. Set up a fleet bank, loot it, get a thumbs-up.

Griefing also can wipe out your in-game items, permanently. Your $50 ship? Gone forever.

If you enjoy PVP with really high consequences and permadeath for real money, Eve is your game.

Let's see when its the last time I called someone a noob here in STO...uhm...just yesterday. I almost sell him a lifetime pass to the shuttle bay area at ESD too tiger-2.gif

Or to almost everyone. It takes a special kind of person to enjoy EVE. I am almost certain that the average EVE player sleeps on a bed of nails before going to their job as an accountant.

Just as you're not willing to call AoY an expansion because it's too tiny, I'm not ready to classify EVE as very very very huge game based on its playerbase and longevity not measuring up to that Blizzard game and its longevity not measuring up to Ultima or EQ.

Eve is still rather small too.

    Yep pretty much this.

It'll be a gankers dream when it goes free to play. ..and that is pretty much what that whole game is - PvP ganking and grinding. Those who are established already will love it, those who are new will be driven away in droves.

The only thing it got going for it is a MASSIVE play space.

I wonder what would change in STO if players had to purchase insurance contracts for their ships in the event the ship blows up? Each respawn will require an insurance contract so purchasing multiple insurance contracts (that is bound to that specific ship) is necessary. No insurance? Well... you cannot respawn and you immediately get kicked out of the mission to the nearest friendly starbase.

Players have it good in STO when it comes to dying. You do not need to purchase ship insurance. The reason why no insurance is necessary is because in STO you will still have your ship after it gets destroyed.

In EVE Online if your ship gets destroyed... well you are more or less F**KED because that means you need to actually buy a new ship. Back in 2013 I recall reading an article about the most expensive ship destroyed (forever) in the game was worth over $11,000 when the in game currency value of the ship was converted over into US dollars.

Yeah, not a game for casual players.

I may go explore EvE Online again in an Alpha Clone, I thought the graphics were always top notch. But I'm too casual to really do anything more than noodle around.

The new player experience for eve online is great it walks you through the basics gives you ships and ISK and you now start with a bunch of skills already at rank 3, with Eve going F2P it should boost the player base which is great however the restrictions are very harsh.

F2P: Can only fly joined faction ships, can only use T1 gear, can only fly up to cruiser level, basically they have said a f2p character will cap out the skills they can get at 5mil skill points which any Eve player will tell you is nothing.

    You can't kill STO.

But I'd be interested in trying EvE.
I've been listening to the EvE soundtrack for years now, and always considered trying it out...

Do you need a fancy computer to run it ?
My laptop is getting a little long in the tooth.
Quad Core i7 with I think 4 gigs of ram (might be 8 gigs I have to check tonight)... basic "Gaming" graphics card.
I'm not very computer saavy these days... Will that run EvE ?

should be fine depending on the graphics card you may need to run on lower settings or even tick the box and use the old directx9 version which is for older computers.

Also eve online now using a streaming client so you can get into game in minutes now as it downloads the files in the background while playing, its worth giving it ago now sign up for a free trial to get a head start.

Nah, Dell sell pretty good laptops... depending on the model.

I currently have a Dell Latitude 3540 which has core i5-4200u and a Radeon HD 8850m (~ nVidia 940m) that I currently use to play STO 'cause my desktop crapped out. Trying to determine if the GPU is faulty or the motherboard is the problem.

I was thinking about buying the Dell XPS 15, but I am kinda curious about the refresh of that laptop. I am wondering if the refresh will use the nVidia GTX 1050 or GTX 1060. I am guessing the GTX 1050 because the GTX 1060 will likely generate too much heat.

the benchmark for the new mobile chips are impressive its about a 7% drop in performance compared to the desktop versions which anyone who knows anything about graphics will know thats a huge deal! up until now the mobile version where around 50-60% slower than the desktop versions.
  • jaguarskxjaguarskx Member Posts: 5,945 Arc User
Yeah, based on some preliminary benchmarks the mobile GTX 1060 GPU definitely provides better average performance than the desktop GTX 970 (which is what I have). I have not seen any benchmarks yet regarding the mobile GTX 1050, but I would guess it will have better performance compared to the desktop GTX 950 which in turn will mean better performance compared to the mobile GTX 960m.

I like the form factor of the Dell XPS 15 so that is why I am specifically interested in a refresh of that laptop.

What are you smoking? EvE is not this HUGE game.. its has a very loyal active hard core group.. but as far as numbers of players active it is one of the smaller mmo's on the market. It peaked at 500k subs 2 years ago..

Its also a active griefing game world.. and unforgiving in terms of loss when you are killed... getting jumped by other players is a very common thing... back stabbing is a norm.. as it were

Do to its hard core nature and small size as is and lack of main stream name power.. it will have little to no impact on STO

Newegg has some GTX 1060 laptops out now, but starting at $1,400. That might drop as supply increases and the early-buyer tax expires.

I have a nice desktop system (GTX 980ti) but if there are models with a 1050 under $1,000 I might finally get a laptop with gaming power for travel.

One can believe the moon is made of of cheese as well. AOY is 1/10th of what DR was or even LOR that was at best a half a$$ expansion.
Eve is HUGE compared to STO. At most you get a few K players or so at the height of an STO expansion...

while EVE has 10X that volume at any given day:
