The world is full of expensive things people buy, because they can.
The world is also full jealous people who insist that buying those expensive things is stupid or insane, because they can't.
I can. I can probably even get all of them with my Zen reserve.
The thing is, I won't, because it is insane.
^^ This right here! I won't. Like ever.
On a related note: Zen prices have jumped from 400 to 415, which is the exact opposite of what some people here claim to be Cryptic's intention. If this was really meant to be a dilithium sink intended to lower the cost of Zen, it has well and truly failed at that task.
Now isn't *that* hilarious!? LOL. All those wannabe Economists, and the exact opposite happens from what they thought! :P (Actually, they're not wrong: prices *should* have dropped, but I'm poking fun of them anyway).
This would actually be indicative that players are trying to buy up all the cheap dilithium that they can, and the Zen sellers are taking advantage of that.
Give it time. Day 1 is always volatile.
Yeah, of course. I just thought it was hilarious a bit, is all.
As to how effective this sink will really be, we'll see. A costume is not a 'must-have' item, like a super-console or something, so it may not have the intended effect. Personally, I didn't need an extra sink; nor an extra MACO costume, for that matter; so, either way, I'm not losing anything.
Is it really an effective sink when people can buy Zen with real money to exchange it for Dil?
If earning Dil was restricted to only what people actually earn in game without outside means, this would be a different story.
Exactly, which is why "this is a dilithium sink" is hilarious, this is exactly why they did this, because they know people will throw away $50 bucks at a pop to wear these.
I wont.
It will only lower the dilex if people buy zen and trade it for dil.
The dilex measures the willingness of people to pay real money to get dil.
And they will, and thats their bussiness when it concerns their own money, they earned it, it's their money.
My point is any economic mechanic or tweak to it in this game is designed in the end to do one thing and one thing only, fatten PWE's bank account.
People claiming this is a dilithium sink, or trading isn't conversion just distract themselves and others from the basic point above, or just like to hear themselves talk.
I think people forking out $50 for a character bound vanity costume in this game is mindless, when one can toss another $10 at it and buy two ships as account wide unlocks.
All this fantasy land BS about dilithium sinks/etc. are just that, this is about PWE fattening it's bank account nothing more.
You should nominate yourself for a Pulitzer Prize in journalism. Maybe even a Nobel in economics. Before today, no one had ever worked out that the purpose of a business is to make profit.
It's gonna change everything.
Lol i wouldn't take any award if they gave it to me, the sad fact is it's as plain as the nose on everyones faces, yet many want to over analyse everything for their own ego boost or to try and defend someone or sombody.
Economic experts are a joke, PHD's in math that try and buffalo everyone into thinking theres "more to it" than just math, economics is just that, math, and "only" math.
Im well aware it's been figured out, a lot of people in this thread dont, its a "dilithium sink", its profit, thats all.
Basically you just agreed with me, just put a different yarn on it, while stating the obvious as well.
Making a profit on a quality product isn't an issue, making a profit on constant excuses is.

I stopped following this thread a long time ago. But with comments like these it's hard to take whatever economic advise you might have provided serious.
Reminds me of those people who claim that economists are dumb because they "don't understand that unlimited growth isn't possible on a finite planet". Nevermind the fact that those people themselves fail to understand the concept of economic growth or that economics is about more than just that.
Or politicians who call climate science all sorts of things when they are in no position to judge the work of an entire part of the scientific community (see Jim Inhofe for just one hilarious and somewhat sad example).
It can be quite funny to see people making generalist and derogrative comments about something - in these cases an entire field of science - while completely failing to grasp even some of its most basic features.
Then dont take any of it seriously, i wont mind.
Buy a $50 costume while your at it, it's your money after all, expert economics and all that.
While i do grasp the basic features others, apparently yourself as well buy into all the hot air published about it, thats your line anyway.
Economic experts all come around to one hard fact, a bussiness that doesn't make profit fails, no PHD is required for that knowledge, more money is +, less is -, (math), if you believe the "experts" or believe they are nothing more than overpaid underworked hot air, well i cant helpya.
Did you have anything to say?, no i didn't think so.
Geologists are a joke. They try to fool everyone into thinking rocks are more than just rocks.
A rock is a rock, financial and economic "theories" are cute distractions peddled by overeducated egotistical windbags to try and justify shoddy bussiness practices and crooked pocketing of cash.
Amazes me people cant see the forest for the trees, by all means carry on, noone who peddles these fantasies need any help makeing themselves look the way they do.
And players like you and the two experts above you are why PWE will succeed in making a profit on these costumes.
I find gamers amusing, "It's not just about red or black ink", yea, "it is".
Gotta love that game sig, internet anonimity, which is their affliction to begin with.
IT experts, financial experts, political and sociology experts, all because they read some drivel peddled by someone on the web they never met, never talked to, and never saw an actual diploma for.

Apologies for shortening the quote but this was the part that really caught my eye. I mentioned something like this a few pages back when I commented at the lack of communication within the company to its customers. Its like the the same scenario with this company over and over again. They put something out, whether its a promotional prize, event, item (you name it) and then find the worst way to bring it out. Its like they cannot put something out there without finding a way to get alot of their customers angry at them.
What really boggles the mind and for me is incredibly annoying is the fact they don't bother communicating any reasoning behind these decisions which to me says either they are too ignorant to handle the fallout for any bad decisions or have some standing order to the effect of "when in the wrong or in bad light thou shalt never breech the "wall of silence" ... ok maybe not so much in those words (ala "Ten Commandments" lol) .
"There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life." - Ten Bears (Will Sampson)

Sounds like you have everything figured out.
Hot shower and see this, bout time, yea "i do", and everyone who buys the $50 costume is proving me right as we speak.
By all means if you dont want me to have it figured out, challenge me with something that isn't childs play common sense.
None of this takes PHD's in hot air economic differences or theories.
Reading threads like this, in particular the last maybe dozen posts, really highlights why so many new businesses fail. So many people think they've got it "all figured out". They think it's all so simple. Anyone with any real business experience just gets a good laugh.
And players like you and the two experts above you are why PWE will succeed in making a profit on these costumes.
And this is bad BECAUSE?!? They are a company. THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO MAKE MONEY. Seriously...WTF is wrong with you people and your hatred of other people making money. If they don't make money, they shut down and the game goes away. That is how this all works. Seriously...W.T.F.
You need to be careful with the "you people" references, not me, i dont care, i cannot be insulted period.
I never said it was bad, dont see it in that post.

Koolaid addicts buy all the theories and differences, never get it figured out because they are too busy reading and believeing the experts fairy tales, part of the problem, not the answer.
If reading these threads highlights bussiness failure talk to the other guy, he knows where to find the difference and math doesn't matter classes.
And players like you and the two experts above you are why PWE will succeed in making a profit on these costumes.

And oh btw now we have an oversimplification issue, 180 degree shift, never said i hated them making money, know why? because i dont.
Will they clean up the server issues and everything else?, or just pocket the cash and let you live with it, you tell me.
And again, like the other guy did, you just repeated what i said earlier with a new twist, thnx for establishing my correctness yet again.
Gotta love people who pick arguments they cant win, and with people they cant win them with.
I'm begining to wonder if this topic has run it's course, and needs to be locked...
I may not fully agree with the pricing, but if history is an indicator, I don't believe we will be seeing a downward adjustment.
I'm starting to believe this as well, 19 pages of this and we are no longer any closer to an answer then when we started. Possibly down the road there may be a dilithium discount to snag all the stragglers that didn't by this costume at the current prices but I wouldn't hold my breath for it.
To be honest, from an ethical standpoint I must agree with @shurkhemolight - sure, there's nothing wrong about PWE making a profit, but not all means are justified by the ends, especially when it's 'just' profit.
If this really is focused more on capitalizing on human stupidity than on actually accomplishing its stated goal of being a dilithium sink (and let's face it, the various mistakes they've made would certainly make more sense in that context), then yes, it's a bad plan. There's nothing wrong with making a decent profit as an intended side-effect of some other beneficial action, but when the 'beneficial action' becomes a side-effect of making profit then your priorities are shifted in a way that could have damaging consequences if your clientele figures out what you're doing. (A good example of this would be the EA Battlefront - instead of making a worthy successor to the series, they went off and made a reskin of a lesser game, possibly improving that one but still remaining light years behind its Star Wars predecessors. Why? Because it was cheaper this way and people would still pay through the nose for it. *rolls eyes*)
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
And players like you and the two experts above you are why PWE will succeed in making a profit on these costumes.

A wee black & white, don't ya think?! I doubt you'll find anyone here who believes Cryptic shouldn't make money. Between 'making a living' and 'outright greediness' lies a realm of nuance begging your acquintance, though.
Besides, Cryptic's 'whale' policy is a risky one, really. In case you didn't know, this is kind of a thing in the MMO world, where they basically say 'TRIBBLE the f2p player,' and put all their eggs in the whales' baskets. It's risky, because making yourself dependent upon a few super-whales means your business could easily collapse when your whales population suddenly fluctuates. CCP (EvE Online) learned this lesson the hard way (aka, 'Monoclegate'). I sincerely hope Cryptic doesn't follow in their footsteps. So far it's only a costume, so I'm not all that worried (yet). But if this starts to become a game where only those with 'outrageous fortune' can participate comfortably, then this is going to go down hill pretty fast. The safest bet, for any company, is to always cater to the largest common denominator. I hope Cryptic remembers that.

If I remember correctly, cryptic had no troubble to anger the whales last month a lot when they introduced the infinity lock box.
I don’t think that a 2mil Dil costume is dedicated at whales at all. Considering what I payed for STO the past four years I think I would qualify myself for this term. Still the maco outfit was not remotely directed at my wallet just at my Dil refinement capacity. Might be hard for some to realize but I could easily purchase such an outfit every 3 weeks without spending a dime. Others even two times a month, perhaps sooner.
If you have reached a position in game where you have everything you want, where the gear on 9 or soon 10 toons is all epic, where you have bankrolled the construction of a tier 5 star-base on your own you sooner or later reach a point where you have simply nothing left to do get in this game, nothing to play for.
That’s where these outfits seem to come into play, simply for hardcore STO enthusiasts like me.

And that is why I am not all that worried yet. Currently it's just 1 costume; and it looks like it might just be meant to be a sink. If otherwise common items start moving to the Dilithium store, at high pace, that is when I will really start to get worried. We'll see where it goes.
How did the Infinity box anger the whales? I thought that was the Nagus?
Yeah - confused at this one too; the feedback at the time suggested that the Infinity lockbox was actually a popular move.
The Nagus however.....
Yeah, not understanding that either. Unless they mean something like 'Whales are angry now because their thought-to-be very rare stockpiled lockboxes are suddenly commonly available again.' I could see that. From a player perspective, though, I love the Infinity lockbox!

As I stated earlier, this is already part of a trend, albeit it has now manifested itself in the Dilithium arena as well.
Lobi Store items I mentioned previously:
The raising of the price of the Jem'hadar Outfit with loss of the equipment upgrade.
The Leeta Outfit that needed two Lobi Store items to complete what was seen.
This was not and never was intended to be a Dilithium Sink. It was a stalking horse.
Speaking of horses, a few years ago during the Beta of Riders of Rohan expansion. There was a Daily Quest in Harwick that had one riding around on a stick pony Hobby Horse. They put that item in the Turbine Store on Beta for 5000 Turbine Points (Zen here). It was a full speed mount but could only be used in non-combat areas. (Normal Premiem Mounts were 2000 or 3000 for an Account Unlock).
Needless to say this went over very poorly and was never implemented for sale but as a prize drop during a Festival.
We have here a test marketing well before intended release where input was paid attention to. Not a midnight drop with no preview test, etc.

Well...
What's more important - some Trek fanboy being able to wear a jacket for his make-believe character, or tacofangs being able to afford his healthy taco diet?

You all buy the hot air.
Gotta love that game sig, internet anonimity, which is their affliction to begin with.
IT experts, financial experts, political and sociology experts, all because they read some drivel peddled by someone on the web they never met, never talked to, and never saw an actual diploma for.
There are leaps of faith, and just gullibility.
Again: lol.
Perhaps you should start by learning the difference between 'economics' and 'business economics'. This is exactly what I meant with generalist statements.
And to answer your last question: no I don't have anymore to say. It's not my job to give you an education after all, nor am I particularly interested in reading uninformed opinions at the moment.
Your comments have been very funny nevertheless.
Well im grateful you wont be educating me, thanks, i dont want a course in math doesn't matter or economic differences 101.
And if you didn't have anything else to say, you wouldn't have bothered.
The funniest thing around here is koolaid addictions, which ive never seen a 12 step program advertised for.
Such is the world today, ever more populated by the educated (see "indocrinated"), crowd totally out of touch with reality and getting the latest information from soundbytes, tweats etc. sosf.
Well, i "am done", i have to go live in reality where math does matter and job shifts etc, carry on.
Oh, lol.
Economics.
You need to be careful with the "you people" references, not me, i dont care, i cannot be insulted period.
I never said it was bad, dont see it in that post.
Whats your point cold.
And oh btw now we have an oversimplification issue, 180 degree shift, never said i hated them making money, know why? because i dont.

I think that a lot of lock box items having their worth reduced to 10% of their former value hurt those who bunkered those items most the most.
Just imagine you saved your EC in form of 200 kemo manuals, 50 leeches and 10 IL traits, take a 3 weeks trip somewhere and then return back to STO.

The infinity lockbox was popular with the masses. Since I swim in dil and not ec it was also highly popular with me.
Still for all those STO Ferengi playing the exchange all day while gambling, I doubt it.
