But I really am not very happy at all with the direction the game is going. No doubt some very clever and unique individual will point out that I should stop playing the game if I'm not liking it. And they have a point.
But why should I have to stop playing the game?
Are they REALLY my only two options? Keep playing, or quit.
No, of course not.
But every time I take a break, I come back and it's WORSE.
I fail to see how I am bringing that on myself. Is it by returning and expecting that the devs have used the interim period in order to have polished the game, or even have made certain mission actually finishable by now? And should I just drop that Romulan Special Officer (or whatever - the one where the Fed variant gives you an Exocomp) mission? And if so, why hasn't that been mentioned in any announcement? I understand that research is important in hobbies, but *a GAME should not come with homework* ("Check all the forums to see if any particular mission should be dropped. Do this once a week."). Or, in this case, I am expected to trawl every single Patch Note since I last logged on, just in case. And that's not homework, how, exactly?
So I am going to keep on taking a break, and coming back (rinse and repeat), and, according to my past experiences, either being disappointed or being annoyed. Or both.
This wasn't an 'I quit' or a 'doom' thread. Curious to see how the moderators deal with it. Please note I am not talking specifically about moderation or the way it is done, I am sincerely pondering the outcome. This is not a test, and I am not trying to push the boundaries. I accept that this may be removed, because I don't own the servers this post is kept on.
Having said that:
If you guys moderated that game with 1/10 of the zeal that you moderate these forums with, you'd find you had much better player retention. EVERY SINGLE person I know of in real life who has tried to play this game was repulsed by zone chat, because the tone of the zone chat is so far away from what the Star Trek IP means, that it's literally confusing for them. That's not on the players, that's on the higherups who have decided that zone chat doesn't need moderating, because MONEY, or whatever the reason is. The end result is that we have a semi-fun game with severe UI issues that just doesn't care if your time is ruined by the idiocy of others. So, the one game that should stand for tolerant behaviour (which, might I point out, ironically and yet solidly *does not include accepting total bigots as actual humans*) is now just some random stupid MMOs like every other one out there. Perhaps I am too close to this IP (or delusional - that's not impossible), but it used to MEAN SOMETHING other than "pew pew lockboxy lying about T6" stuff. Not any more.
If I wanted to feel that unimportant, I'd ask my damn parents what I've done wrong in my life. I'm sure they could provide the same 'you are utterly and totally worthless to me as a person' vibe that the game does. GAME. Look that word up. STO is not a game, it's a plebiscite sim set in space.
Yes, I understand that Cryptic are a company, and not a collection of fuzzy animal toys whose sole purpose it is to provide me with good feelings.
But the name Star Trek was supposed to mean something. I mean, it still does to me. And, I think, many others.
Where is THAT game? The exploration game that introduces the player to the ideas of cultural sensitivity, and culture-based ethical systems. No, we get to shoot ships and buy lockbox keys instead. WHERE IS *THAT* GAME? because I want to play THAT, instead.
But we have this instead, so I'll make do.
Because THIS game, socially, is like being put in a room full of spiders and told that you can write letters to complain about how 'spidery' it is, but the people who invited you into that room in the first place - with the lure of 'fun' or 'entertainment with a Star Trek vibe', might I add - are the ones taking the complaints.
How many complaints do you have to make in order for you to realise that *you're the only one taking the complaints seriously*?
Actually, go ahead and delete this post. It'll make a better blog than post, anyway.
Until next time Cryptic - I wanted to be pals, but if frenemies is all you've got, I'll take it. God help me, I'll take it.

But I did catch a "go ahead and delete this" taunt...seems a silly choice with no positive outcome.
There is no point in the game's history I'd rather go back to than where it us now.
1. hope you create the game of our collective dreams !
2. which missions are not finishable for you ?
3. why drop ? keep it maybe some day we get it. after a quick google or stowiki search ask in the forums !
4. close the zone chat in the chat setting
5. it's mostly about pew pew but not only
6. new exploration system is work in progress
7. instead of complaining bringing detailliert ideas would be helpful
8. yes better blog

Go into the chat settings function (main menu if not from the chat-screen shortcut) and "edit" your channel lists - leaving "zone" off of your main list (or all of them, for all anyone cares). You may want to "read up" on some of the specializaed channels that have become pseudo-zone chats (DOFFjobs and NOPPublicService) which are periodically interrupted with actual discussions about their original function...
As to the "actual type of content" - The primary "known" way of delivering a very... intelligent story... through the "video game" method is through what's been dubbed the "interactive movie" - think Final Fantasy VIII and XIII - two games where the "grindy combat" is something that "interrupts" the progression of the storyline. Both were fairly universally panned in the "Western Gaming World".
So, to be "engaging enough" to us, more and more often the missions (and therefore primary themes) of the game are centered around conflict - to give us the game we're all here playing, and the "intellectual" portion is delivered via dialogs and cutscenes in the mission content. Do a little forum searching about a mission called "House of Pegh" to see how Cryptic slipped in a touch of "intellectual commentary" and the playerbase's response over it...
Would STO even survive one year if it became an "interactive movie", that was consistently dependent on the next "content release" to retain players - who would play each segment once then be away from the game till the next segment came along?

Pretty much.
Also why the hell does digital TV have worse recption then normal TV?
I never socialize outside our fleet / alliance with the notable exception of Tuning in to elite channels if I have a question about builds.

Free speech means free speech for everyone, not just the people you agree with.
You always have the option of ignoring people you don't like, or turning off the zone chat if it doesn't interest you.
Play the game, don't play the game, I do not care. If you feel the need to come on the forums and be a little twit on it, be ready to be called out on it.

DISCOUNT BLUEPRINTS FOR HOME BUILT WEAPONRY AND POTTERY
Acme strives to bring to you the public, some of the finest in home built defenses for your defense needs, its not only the military who should have these items, but the public at large, what if an alien fleet arrives and wipes out the military, well dont wait to find out here are some live fire footage from actual satisified customers
And here we have an actual live fire test , of a home built MLRS its just as good as those found in the military
Here we have the homemade mortar defense system , this young man purchased a blueprint and built it to the exact ACME standards.
But he lacked the knowledge how to opperate it, so to ensure he would be able to defend his home against unwanted alien invasions , we here at acme sent our crack commando and mortar specialists to show the young man how to opperate the mortar system.
It was a complete success
Hre we have a group of young men , who took the time and patience to make a mounted recoiless rifle, they learned how to opperate it correctly and the results were amazing.
a complete success
And here is a fine example of ACME brand pottery
If you feel that an alien invasion could happen at any time, and you need military grade ardware but are on a show string budget , think of ACME Home Defense systems and pottery.
Remember If it doesnt say ACME, then you might shoot your eye out
"I am not quitting and this is not a doom thread"
oh yeah? both your points are invalidated by what you wrote, especially the doom mongering you are bringing to the thread with all that extra negativity.
and you say things are worse and you dont like it, like cryptic would care for another player leaving, you are a customer here, you have no right to say what they do. so you can doom monger or you can quit and something that you actually enjoy, dont attempt to do both, doom threads are not allowed in the fct and neither are rage quit threads.

I came into this thread expecting to link a picture of Dr Doom or something, but I almost died of laughter when I saw this post, well done!
judging on the look on his face, he probably knew it wasnt live.

FPSRussia never runs, even when his cameraman takes shrapnel during filming and winds up in the hospital.
/1 Can i have your stuff if you quit?
/2 If that isn't a gloom and doom post, then i am myself the Flying Tribble of Doom.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
There's a lot to like about STO, at least I find a lot to like about it. But like I said elsewhere, I'm easier to please than most.
While I agree that certain Zones (ESD) are a cesspool of rants, hate, political nonesense, and even outright religious preaching because "we need to be shown the light", you CAN just turn off Zone Chat.
I mean seriously... someone was quoting the Bible IN A STAR TREK GAME one time! I shot back with a quote from Q in DS9.
I also called him out on trying to convert people. He naturally denied it, but the fact was he was trying to make us see things his way, thus... WAS trying to convert us.

"We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
I wonder if Tacos trump french fries?
spamming huh? this thread has completely lost the plot now.
