So what people said a few days ago about merchandizing got me thinking.
what if any spoilers are there in the merchandizing?
One that caught my attention was the "Blade builders" sets. One kit is specifically meant to mimic Kylo's sword. Another looks like Anakin's, then there's Luke's... along with several short green blades.... where did THOSE come from?
Also there are several commercials that show kids acting out scenes from various Star Wars movies.
One seems to be based on the original trilogy confrontations between Luke and Darth Vader.
But another has a girl dressed as Rey who seems to be getting kidnapped by Stormtroopers... A guy shows up to rescue her, she says "what took you so long?" then the two of them fight the storm troopers with lightsabers.... But the guy looks a lot like Luke.... also Rey uses a blue light saber and the guy uses a green one.

I get your point, but I don't think they are really giving away any big secrets with toys and such. For example, because of the "secret reveal" of Luke and what his role was in TFA, they didn't have an action figure of him like they did for every other character in the movie. Instead, they came out with these so they could still sell a Luke toy:
As you can see, all they did was take a TESB and ROTJ Luke figure and slap a Force Awakens backboard on them(and with the latter, even gave him the "outfit" Rey was wearing when she was scavenging). So no, I don't think there are any real secrets in the merch. As the above examples show, they are actually selling things that have absolutely nothing to do with TFA but just branding it that way to make more money.
The monarchies were elected. It's not that out there. The Vatican does the same thing.
I believe Germanic tribes used to have an elected kingship as well, if I am not mistaken.
Anyway, history geeking aside, yes, Alderaan blew up but Leia does seem to retain her title based on C-3PO's remark in TFA. It may be as much in honor of her loss of a world as anything else, and for the comfort of what few Alderaanian refugees were not at home when the Death Star blew up their homeworld. Still, IF the name is to be taken as a clue of some sort, which it may or may not be, I'd look at the Organa line of inheritance.

Hmmm.... soo.... a descendant of Leia's adopted siblings and thus an actual descendant of the Organas?
Nah...a descendant of Leia's. If Alderaanian law allowed the succession of the monarchy to an adopted child (Leia), then this would mean the title would pass down to Kylo and Rey.
Meaning at least one thing for sure...Kylo Ren is a Disney Prince. O_O

Again, Kathleen Kennedy said the Saga films(numbered episodes) will follow the Skywalkers. While Kylo Ben may be a cousin, he is not a Skywalker. Likewise, some relation of Leia's adopted family is not a Skywalker. One of the central heroes in the saga films is always going to have the last name Skywalker, and they are setting things up for passing the torch to the next generation with Rey.
Kylo isn't even very interesting to me as he's too much rage filled emo teenager at this moment, but that might change. I see potential but fear that they just make him Darth Vader 2.0.
I liked the fact he has a habit of venting his frustrations on innocent equipment. And its kinda obvious he idolizes Vader.
I got an even bigger laugh on my second viewing out of Kylo trashing all that stuff and then coolly turning around and asking the unfortunate soul who provoked that, "Anything else?"

Before the EU got non-canonized, it was explained that the Empire didn't like non humans, and viewed females as less capable than males. Stories about how hard characters like Thrawn and Daala had it come to mind. While they did buck the system, it wasn't easy. Thrawn made Admiral and eventually Grand Admiral because he was a strategic genius. The fact he was Chiss made things harder for him in the eyes of the Imperial Navy. Likewise Admiral Daala didn't have it easy going up the ranks because she was a woman, and I believe viewed as not being as strong or capable as a male officer. She showed them.
Outside of the books, we have no reason why we haven't seen female and alien officers in the Empire. Just small population centers. However we can surmise that the Empire probably did not like aliens based on their attitude towards them.
Actually, Daala slept her way to the top. She was a tactical genius, but as an Army officer. Then Tarkin noticed her, took her as his mistress, and moved her to the Navy so he could hide her from his wife better. And unlike Thrawn, she didn't manage to win a single on-screen combat action against a comparable opponent (blowing away a few cities with turbolasers and AT-ATs doesn't count, especially since the Mon Calamari attack ended up costing her a Star Destroyer) until Legacy of the Force. She objectively wasn't as capable as her counterparts and her sex had nothing to do with it.
I got an even bigger laugh on my second viewing out of Kylo trashing all that stuff and then coolly turning around and asking the unfortunate soul who provoked that, "Anything else?"
And then there was the second one later where you had the two stormtroopers very nervously backing away from the jail cell as Ren starts trashing the place. XD
Incidentally, I was impressed how Abrams managed to make the faceless mooks so expressive in TFA.
"Great War! / And I cannot take more! / Great tour! / I keep on marching on / I play the great score / There will be no encore / Great War! / The War to End All Wars"

Kylo isn't even very interesting to me as he's too much rage filled emo teenager at this moment, but that might change. I see potential but fear that they just make him Darth Vader 2.0.
Actually, I've got a sneaking suspicion that him being an emo teenage Vader wannabe was entirely the point. Remember, Rey called him on it, and mid-mind probe no less, which struck me as intentional lampshade-hanging. I think Abrams knew he couldn't top Vader, so he wrote a character who was just a tryhard and then made the movie universe aware of that fact.

That could be. However, I have listened to probably a dozen podcasts reviewing this movie, and I've noticed that specific phrase being used a LOT when one of the hosts raises an issue/complaint. "Kylo was a whiney TRIBBLE". "Yeah, well that was the point". "TFA was just a remake of ANH". "Yeah, well that was the point". "Rey's character was too perfect". "Yeah, well that was the point". I'm not sure how saying "that was the point" counters a potential problem/criticism, but some people sure seem to think it does

Hey, I'm not saying the movie doesn't have flaws: they certainly could've worked a little harder at distinguishing the plot from ANH, it was weird to have a former stormtrooper even remotely know how to use a lightsaber without barbecuing himself, and Abrams' sense of scale is as bad as ever (though I'll grant Star Wars is as hit-or-miss as Star Trek on that score). It just made more sense to me to file Ren's characterization under "feature" rather than "bug", is all.

Welp, it worked well enough for me, at least, that I've decided to cosplay as Ren despite being nowhere near 6'3". It will be very cool to have my first really GOOD cosplay costume (unless you count my Sherlock one where I basically stole a bunch of stuff out of my work clothes that bore quite a coincidental resemblance ).
Making JJ-haters nuts will be a nice added side effect. I had some real fun getting on this one guy's nerves by daring to show up in a JJ-Khan cosplay before...so yeah.

Well that's the point, isn't it?
Bad puns aside, I think it was a big nod to Vader from JJ as well. Nothing tops Vader in terms of coolness.
All that said, since now his real training starts, I expect to see him much more alike to his granfather.
I believe he was portrayed more akin to young Anakin right at the point of turning to the DS.
Will be very interesting to see how he advances as a character.
I may build a mask someday or commission one, but for now I'm going to use the Black Series replica...voice changer OFF because I've already heard things about it, unless I am able to make some improvements to it based on instructions I've seen on YouTube.
As far as the Khan stuff, I took some definite license with that outfit; it wasn't anything like the quality or screen accuracy (for a shorter person ) of what I'm hoping to eventually pull off with the Kylo Ren one. I am buying the outfit...not talented enough here to make something like that. I know a lot of cosplayers don't like that but it's people like me who keep costume makers in business. (I couldn't go with an off-the-shelf option because at my height, being able to pull it off at all is going to be dependent on the costume being perfectly in proportion with my body, to look halfway convincing, as in my robes cannot be ill fitted and dragging the ground. )
No pics, sorry.

Nice, I didn't know voice changer had issues. Not that I'm surprised, just disappointed a bit. That said, sounds like a solid plan.
As for Kylo, I totally get wanting to buy outfit and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I'm sewing savvy and generally both designed and made outfits and dresses before, and I think if you'd tried you'd be surprised how easy it is. That way you could make it perfect for your height of course, but buying the outfit so that won't be an issue, definitely.
Another thing I see people have issues with on deviantart are the boots, the originals are a lil "SS inspired" as my friend said, and of course the lightsaber. His hilt is only obvious on promotional art, since the movie is so dark even in the scene with his father, we only see a glimpse of his actual hilt... and the replicas, I'm told, are nothing alike visually. Kinda bummer.
Now, I'd love cosplaying Phasma, but dayum getting that outfit...
Yeah, it definitely had issues so I went into it knowing that I may not be able to make that part of it usable. It should arrive later this week and then I can see if the voice changer will be even remotely salvageable for me or not.
More accurate boots are something I may be able to add in a future year but for now I at least have something already in my closet that is menacing enough to at least be fitting for a Dark Sider. Haven't made up my mind on the saber, but if I end up with one of the kind you can actually smack around, they sacrifice some accuracy for utility.
My sewing skills consist of being able to put a button back on my clothes. That's it, I'm afraid. I don't really have steady hands or coordination for much else.

I'd just assume he has training in melee weapons like the trooper with the riot baton thing he fought.
Also, what is off about his scale here?

I guess gluing tinfoil to cardboard doesn't work? :?
Haha, it might work for Tik-Tok (Oz), but no would never work for Phasma.
Could make a tinfoil hat though and act all Mulder spooky, that never gets old, if a lil too 90s.
The fact that the Starkiller's shot could be seen (in real time and not at light years' delay!) from another system, and you could see separate planets get hit. (Consider what it takes us IRL to find exoplanets even for close stars and you'll see where the problem is with that one.) Even though symbolically it was a great effect to help drive home the horror of what was happening, that was definitely a technical inaccuracy, much like Spock seeing the destruction of Vulcan from Delta Vega. I can't even explain it with a Force vision because it was seen by all.
Truthfully though, I find it fairly easy to overlook because of the other thing done VERY right in the Starkiller sequence--which was the establishing shot where we actually see the beam impact the planet. Very much the opposite of the cold, distant destruction of Alderaan.

Oh that! I didn't care about that in the slightest. I'm not watching science fiction, I'm watching Star Wars. Handwave it away with hyperspace accelerating it way past lightspeed and get on with the story.
Also I agree how much more powerful it was compared with Alderaan. You could almost hear a million voices cry out with terror before being suddenly silenced. Something that could have been added to the SEs instead of the extra rocks around R2.

I agree, it's so much stronger because we see their faces second before their doom, Alderaan scene felt like somewhere deep in the cold empty space a planet exploded, cold scene. You couldn't consciously link that scene with people dying, it felt like already deserted planet. Of course, with technology at hand then, it ended up pretty well anyway.

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Haha, it might work for Tik-Tok (Oz), but no would never work for Phasma.
Could make a tinfoil hat though and act all Mulder spooky, that never gets old, if a lil too 90s.
Truthfully though, I find it fairly easy to overlook because of the other thing done VERY right in the Starkiller sequence--which was the establishing shot where we actually see the beam impact the planet. Very much the opposite of the cold, distant destruction of Alderaan.
