Actually, if we're talking about an essentially "immortal" race of beings who have lived far longer than 200,000 years, this may seem to them a short length of time when compared to their overall lifespan. Obviously, they can be killed under extreme circumstances (such as the bombardment), but possibly they have become so advanced that under normal circumstances, their lifespan is of an indefinite length of time.
Which isn't such a far stretch, given that in the real world there are a few animals and organisms that possess biological immortality, they can be killed but they have no natural limit to their lifespan.
yes, please, please. this would be ridiculous. Iconian ships must stay a mystery; the undine ships available for the players was a mistake, please don't do the same mistake.
That settles that little debate some were having about the Heralds actually *being* Iconian.
Well...it's still a bit of a muddled issue, actually. They are in fact from Iconia, it's true, but the article specifically says they are not the Iconians. And the article doesn't really narrow down what they actually are in relation to the Iconians, beyond tossing around some theories. Maybe the whole mystery behind their origins is something that will be explored in a future feature episode...or maybe they just like fueling forum speculation. :P
I did like the clarification that they were not genetically created, though. They would seem a little too much like the Jem'hadar, otherwise....
"There will never be enough blood to wash away my need for vengeance! A single world...I could destroy a million worlds and it would not be enough! Your existence is an insult to the memory of my people! I will continue my fight, even if I must fight alone!"
The mistake is that all Undine ships are semi-sentient and controlled telepathically, so rightly you shouldn't be ABLE top fly them. At ALL. Having playable Iconian ships would just make them less threatening, which is NOT something they need. IMO they're already kinda pitiful.
This whole Iconian/Herald thing is just too derivative for me as is all the accompanying art design. I'd love some more grounded stories that don't sound so convoluted. Like can you guys come up with something that doesn't involve: "New Species to fight!" "New Ships!""New Reputation!" The story telling in this game is just straight up awful.
The Undine use biotechnology very different from what everyone else in Star Trek uses. It comes from a whole other dimension, in fact. That's a big reason why the Borg had such a hard time with the Undine to begin with; their tech was so alien, they could neither assimilate nor adapt to it.
And yet somehow, the Lobi Consortium, made up of money-grubbing Ferengi, somehow managed to adapt Undine vessels for use by non-Undine? Something even the Borg would have a hard time doing? I know that, in general, the lockbox ships exist in a muddy grey area in terms of cannon, but that's still quite a stretch in terms of suspension of disbelief, at least for me, and apparently some other players

Buy, but ... how we winz war if we don't haz Iconian ships?? And Iconian Antiproton weapons??
I'd much rather have RWBY added. I for one would love a high-caliber phased sniper-scythe
This sparks my curiosity. Should you decide to create a character and/or boffs resembling the ladies from said series (sadly, I don't think the character builder supports heterochromia iridum...), do let us know, please.

Well, to be honest, I have seen enough semi-sentient ships controlled by other aliens in other shows and books and films. maybe thats why I see no problem in that.
Buy, but ... how we winz war if we don't haz Iconian ships?? And Iconian Antiproton weapons??
How don't we win the war? We have players doing 75k DPS. Even the Heralds are not so tough as to stand up to that. I have seen it and I have fought them. They are powerful, but not potent. As for "Iconian Antiproton," the Iconian Resistance rep has better coming anyway.
"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them." -Thomas Marrone
Please may these ships never appear in any lock box.
I have already bought the Keys to try and win one. For the Iconian Dreadnought though guess I'll have to wait for the duty officer packs. Thats how they do things now. They have thrown in a enigma this time. If I read correctly there will be 4 ships. Lockbox, Lobi , Duty officer pack and...................???????? We shall have to wait and see.

Thralls These Heralds are masters of gateways. Fast and deadly, Thralls can teleport at will and open Gateways behind their target for a deadly flanking attack. Destroy the portal or be prepared to deal with a Thrall in hand-to-hand combat.
Any connection or relation to the Thralls from "The Gamesters of Triskelion"? The reference to hand-to-hand combat, plus that Galt (the head Thrall) was able to teleport and other such things, makes me wonder.
Maybe the Thralls in TOS were very early versions of the current Thralls...or maybe the Providers were just Iconian couch potatoes that wanted to gamble and watch sports, not conquer the whole universe.

I will do that. This game needs more Melee weapons for that to truly become a reality tho

I agree with you. The only lockbox/lobi ships that had rational explanations for why Starfleet and the KDF were using them were the Galor and D'Kora.
All of the others were pushing it. But at least they operate on similar technological principles as those of the Federation and Empire.
The Undine's are just too alien and heavily rooted in psionics to be used by non-Undine without years (perhaps decades) of research. And even then, there is no guarantee they'll ever crack the secrets of Undine bio-tech in that time.
However it's good ol' fashioned, real-world marketing. There are people out there (players) who think they are cool enough to want one for themselves. There's nothing wrong with that. So, I won't begrudge anybody for wanting a bio-ship or using one.
Now, if Cryptic could focus more on new faction-specific designs and the remaining canon vessel classes, I would be 100% satisfied. But if the alien ships sell for Cryptic in terms of metrics and money, then I won't gripe too much about it. It's helps keep the game going.
And I'm sure the denizens of the art subforum will appreciate it, too.
This game needs more Melee weapons for that to truly become a reality tho
For starters, they could implement ones they already have models for - most notably the Katar'kin polearms, along with the other Klingon melee weapons (the mek'leth and d'k tahg), along with animations as needed. And along with that should come the addition of melee weapons to the roster of craftable things.
With those basics down, then they can go further afield...
So we've gone from massive bags of HP that flat out ignore control abilities to a bunch of enemies that will 1 shot you. This is not creative or impressive.
I'm liking the sound of those Iconian ships, I want NPC's that are terrifying to fight against, those that can kill you outright if you don't use tactics.
I don't just want more Vaadwaur HP sponges, but ships with powers that can unleash the power of a star or mess with gravity at will should be interesting.
They need to be genuinely scary to fight against with a real risk of getting flattened if you just go in all guns blazing.
"General Server Stability" means they are bolting the servers to the floor, right? Wouldn't you be upset if Branflakes were to go stumbling into the server room, knock a rack over, and bring the game down for a DAY? SO, they aren't scrwing it up, they are bolting it down.
The mistake is that all Undine ships are semi-sentient and controlled telepathically, so rightly you shouldn't be ABLE top fly them. At ALL. Having playable Iconian ships would just make them less threatening, which is NOT something they need. IMO they're already kinda pitiful.
People can capture ships you know, and use it against the very souls that built them.
That is the greatness of learning, intelligence and irony within our existence. They believe to be the smartest beings in the universe and that they deserve to be Gods... We will show them we deserve that or more.

I'll pay to own the Quas Cruiser, the Vonph Battleship, and the Iaidon Dreadnought.
I'll also buy into your next ship pack too in the Pilot specialization.
And maybe buy your T6 X-faction Cruiser bundle.
And while we're at it, toss in the Brute Armor + Mace into the Lobi Store and the Harbinger Wear into the Iconian Lockboxes as well, I'll fork out even more for those.
What I see it as is a species who has a clear control over gravity. I'd imagine having a centralized spot that you can directly control with gravitational force would allow you to do some rather terrifying up-close damage (I'm currently considering the gravitational relativity in value for black holes) closer to the source. This combined with the fact that they as a species seem to have mastery over transportation powers means that up-close fighting would actually be their forte.
Think of it this way, if you can close the gap with your opponent almost every single time, why WOULDN'T you try to min-max your melee abilities? :P
That is insanely well thought out.
I salute you again, LaughingTrendy. It was a maneuver worthy of a Romulan.

Hmmm...so mechanical control over gravity as opposed to, say, telekinesis? BTW, your rationale also works with the Undine and their telekinesis, as they also seem to use melee tactics when they can get away with it.
But an example of why a species might not (just because I can ): it always struck me that despite the exaggerated sizes seen in-game for some Devidians, they are *so* reliant on telekinesis (and phasing as defense) that I would not expect them to be physically capable of absorbing as much damage as a humanoid.
(In my stories, my character Alyosha has directly stated that--but obviously he isn't STO canon. )
The Heralds don't appear to have that problem so far--but if they did, that would be a valid reason why not to favor melee.

Good point. That wouldn't be a story hint, would it?
Your father was captain of a starship for twelve minutes. He saved 800 lives, including your mother's, and yours.
I dare you to do better.

You know that is exactly what they are going to do... Just look at the "Iconian Armor" and all its "This will do, throw it in there" glory.
