right because Voyager was a specially designed ship for piloting? or was it that janeway searched even the lowest of places to find a pilot who would maximize the performance of her ship?
Voyager is a hero ship. It has plot armour. Clearly of the impenetrable kind. And when even plot armour wasn't enough, Future Janeway came back in time to give the ship MOAR ARMOURZ :P
Anyways, point being that this is the way Cryptic has decided to run with specializations. Specialized ships, for specialized abilities. And these ships, so far, have had inherent abilities such as Inspiration. So it does appear to be more about the ship than the boff.
The boff abilities are pretty trivial in comparison to the captain skills, or the ships' inherent abilities. Those two are the biggest game changers.
EDIT: I should say that the ship abilities aren't even massively OP. They're just fun, different things to do with the ship. I enjoy my Command ship, but I also have a great time flying any of my other ships. I appreciate the choices that they've been offering recently.
Even the largest modern Cruiser or Dreadnought can be made to dance through the stars when you have the right pilot who truly knows the ship and her capabilities!
I'm a bit confused on how to train my bridge officers in the Command, Intelligence or Pilot specialization. I am "googled and wikid-out" and I still can't figure it out. Where do I start? I can't find a way to begin the process. Where do I find or buy the initial PADD/Manual to use on my bridge officers?

this sounds really cool and everything but unless there are plans to let us transform bridge officer slots into pilot or command or whatever other insane hybrid type slot you guys come up with its going to get a bit annoying.
<snip>
I'm fine with the new ships and such the problem is I'm insanely picky about how my ships look, I'm one of those people that can spend well over an hour in the customization window. The Fed command ships look amazing although a "No-NecK" option would have been even better letting you jam the upper and lower hulls together.
The model of hybrid only station slot also brings up another problem there are a lot of cool looking ships in the game, the problem is it can become kind of bland due to lack of variety of ships being used, by allowing either creation of these hybrid stations or slotting on older ships you allow people to have more choice in what to fly. Yes the old ships are still "competitive" however most people like shiny new things/ability's and letting them really build something unique and fun is the best way to get them to stick around.
My concept too, I like(d) the ship I have(had), why am I having to shell out $$$ I do not want to to keep things relevant for playing what I want to play in game?
BRIDGE MODULES- make it a 5$ or so upgrade like T5 that will give you a revenue stream, I might buy a couple of them for my favorite dhips as well. Intell and Piloting modules are the ones that come to mind. Treat them as a ship tailor interior feature that has the effect of being a console in its own right and providing a "Hybrid Seat" of the appropriate profession. That solves the "Backward compatibility" issues for folks who like their ship exactly as it is, but want the seat. You may make up for the lower price in volume sales...... If you attach a new interior style to each bridge, you get a RP'er market hook too.
You guys need to wake up and look around before you kill your little goose.
The Universe is a messy place, You are born a mess. Sustaining life usually involves cleaning up messes. You die and usually are a mess then too. All of these messes usually involve some blood- get over it.
Personally I think all starships needs to have a pilot Boff Position. Giving this ability to one a few starships isn't a correct thing to do. All starshis must have a Pilot in order for it to go from point A to point B and to execute maneuvers in combat.
My suggestion is to put the Pilot on the Department Head screen and make the Pilot's abilities available when in space. I also suggest giving each Department Head a set up abilities that is available to the Captain. A certain list of abilities at level 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 would be great. After-all, your Captain is a Captain and cannot be running around the ship performing this functions.
The available abilities should come from the Department Heads and be adjustable depending on the Boff number of abilities positions on the ship. Ensign, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, or Commander The starships Executive Officer should give the starship minor Captain abilities in addition to the Captain's standard command abilities.
Please do not make the Pilot position on available on a certain number of ships. Give this Boff position to all starships in the game. I think everyone would like this position available in this function. All that has to be done is the coding to add the position to every starship in the game and all players would have to do is go and select the new starship in exchange for their old one. Just like oyu are doing with the Galaxy - class cosmetic changes.

Agreed. I don't mind spending the money if it makes sense to my playstyle. Heck, I could shell out the money to upgrade my Connie with Intel, Command and Pilot but I'd still be underpowered against ships with more BOFF seating. It just seems like Cryptic could INCREASE their revenue stream by allowing upgrades to existing ships with some of these new features.

The problem with ship upgrades is in the way cryptic built their ships.
Wanting to upgrade is as old as the game but since each ship is its own data and nor derived from any common point that would mean that you would have to make a new ship for every upgrade or upgrade combo.
That could have been changed with the t5u stuff but its the classic reason why not.
I also think they should start adding some of these new powers to at less the t5 ships since at the moment they are the least value.
They cost the same as t6 with the upgrade, they unlock at the same rank, and don't get a fancy t5trait. Not worth it anymore.

If cryptic designs that only certain (new) ships will have pilot seats, I will be very dissapointed. The idea that only certain ships benefit from having a pilot is, as mentioned already, truly absurd.
However.....
"Pilots" and "Helmsmen" should be a new mechanic for ALL ships, like Warp Cores, Singluarity for Warbirds, and Comm Array for Cruisers. When those mechanics came out, they applied retroactivley to all ships of a certain archtype. When warp cores were introduced, they applied their respective mechanics retroactivley to all ships and shuttles. I truly hope that this is how the "Helmsmen" mechanic will come into play.

While everyone is talking about these new specialty/hybrid boffs, I just wish they had made engineering on par with Tac and Sci. Instead, Cryptics thrown out some shiny objects to steer away from the Eng problem. Maybe itll benefit cruisers more if the knock off some Eng powers in he process. Oh well...
I really like this idea. Especially since I already used the qualification on a couple of my character's bridge officers. One of them has a ship that supports a pilot, but it is an engineer not a science officer, so there went that idea for my storyline.
I just spent, what is to me, a lot of money on the Dyson ship T5 pack and then found out it is extra to upgrade each ship, so you know I will never be deleting that ship. None of these ships seem to support the pilot specilization though which is unfortunate. I was considering getting a lifetime subscription on their next sale, but I am reconsidering with the realization that the money I spent on these ships may of been a waste if these ships become obsolete.
I think that this new specialization shows promise. The whole idea of specializing an officer has appeal, in that every person on a star ship has some form of hobby or highly developed talent. I look forward to seeing new specializations in the future.
However, with that anticipation comes some trepidation. The current implementation of Boff specializations will soon be insufficient to accommodate all the new space abilities of the various specialization trees.
Currently, in order to use a specialized space ability, you need to have a T6 ship equipped with the appropriately specialized Boff seat. This setup has worked up until now, but with the addition of new specializations, the system will soon become messy. T5-U ships will become more and more obsolete and more and more ships will need to be introduced in order make use of these new abilities. Not everyone will be able to afford these new ships and it will eventually come to the point where a character's ship roster will be hopelessly cluttered with many different high-maintenance ships.
To me, the solution seams simple: A specialization upgrade, similar to the T5-U upgrade. The main idea would be to allow older ships to have one of their Boff seats upgraded to accommodate a specialization of the player's choice. T5-U ships would be given better footing and allow the old players to continue to use their favorite ships. This would also allow for greater customization, in that the player could choose which seat to specialize and thereby make their ship that much more unique. And if ships could use multiple specialization upgrades, the possibilities become that much more interesting. Existing T6 ships could gain that much more potential.
Those are my thought, but I would like to know what you guys think.

Personally, I'd love to just be able to use the Officer's ability instead of needing a special seat for it, but being able to upgrade a seat to allow the specialization, would be awesome.
I'd also like to point out to any admin or site staff that *might* read this, that it really shouldn't take over an hour and finally making a google search to find a forum post on that finally explains I need a special seat (Which apparently doesn't exist yet?) On my ship to let me use a specialization I got for free for completing a mission, that is now totally useless...

This is a big problem with modern societies belief in the overuse of the court system to get what they want.
In order for a law suit tort to be succesful, there has to be some sort of "damage" that needs to be made whole again. For the amount of money anyone could claim damages for, it would have to be a class action law suit, and a court/jury to find that not being able to slot in a command/intel/pilot boff into a uni slot is greivous enough to be negligent/intentional damage. Not likey to happen and it would be considered a frivolous suit. It wouldnt even have enough merit for an out of court settlement. While you are waiting for you suits success to happen, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would love to sell you.

I think its time to let the T5/T5Us fall to the wayside. There are already T6 ships of Previous T5's and the Us have less hull shields etc. Just into T6 ships and be done with t.
What about the new Fleet T6 ships which are really T5 ships with more hull and an extra console slot that we "may upgrade to use Ship Mastery Powers" and don't come with the Starship power of their non Fleet ship?
If you already have the non Fleet T6 ship mastered you can buy one of these T6 Fleet versions, upgrade it like a T5 and regrind its Mastery skills and you have a Fleet T6 ship!
hello i am wondering, my bridge officers are trained in the spacialisation but i cant get then to use there skills in space ... like my engeneering is also an inteligence specialist but the station wont allow the skills i want to put...

Only certain ships allow the use of Specialist seats. The INtel ships allow the use of Intelligence powers, Pilot ships allow pilot powers, and Command ships allow the use of Command powers.
You can see which ships allow certain power types as they are listed as Command pilot/Engineering which means it can have either pilot powers slotted or engineering powers in that seat (or a mix of both from the boff)
