Incompetency or Apathy by DEVS?

I just played the newest "Dust to Dust" mission the ground lags so bad you can only activate your weapon once every six seconds. Did you read that? ONCE EVERY 6 SECONDS That is totally unplayable and unacceptable. If it wasn't for my landing party I would never complete the mission. Here is a small list of the problems there is a consistent lag in both space and on the ground. Since the Anniversary the game has gone stupid screwy full of lag. No matter what time you log on you get rubber-banding regardless of the map it can be ESD or space it all LAGS. It does not matter if it is a PVE Que or a STF any map is full of LAG. In the five years I have been here never have I seen so much LAG and the lack of interest in fixing the game.

Now before you Cryptic defenders come to their aid let's ask some questions shall we?

1. Why doesn't Cryptic/PWE re-invest money into hardware [servers] for the game?

2. Why doesn't Cryptic do what they promised and upgrade the game engine?

3. Why doesn't Cryptic hire more staff to handle the maintenance of the game?

4. Why do they IGNORE players bug reports?

5. Why don't they give the Foundry more tools as they promised [D.Stahl]?

6. Whatever happened to priority login for Lifers?

7. Where's the loyalty to the players who have supported Cryptic for the last 5 years that you promised continuing veteran rewards to?

Now I know the moderators here will say "Do not look at the man behind the curtain!" or we will close the thread and hit you with a warning or outright ban you . All we as players want is to play a game without lag. We simply want to enjoy the game not having to worry what glitch has screwed us over today. Like if I switch maps or go into combat will my boffs/doffs be there? That is not to much to ask to play a lag free glitch free game. So I ask is it due to Incompetency or Apathy by DEVS?.

I played it yesterday and it was particularly laggy in some areas, when on release day it was about the only thing that wasn't laggy. Its strange.

Just so people know yes I have checked my ISP and it works perfectly. Yes my graphics card is up to date and my memory isn't even 10% full. basically I have done all that I can on my end to ensure that I am able to play the game to its fullest potential.

Cryptic has not, I still get DC'ed after completing STFs and returning to previous maps. I still get the loading screen of death. I still get LAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG get the point?

Not so much a defender (but if you like you can refer to me a sir lancelot the 1001st) but it is good to realize that development and maintenance are two separate issues.

The development team has no say in hardware and maintenance so the rant is directed at the wrong persons.

Having said that, while i have had some lagg i have never seen it go as high as 6 seconds and especially not in the featured episode.

There is an issue with grey-out for some powers and that is already in patch notes on tribble. In the mean time, use a pistol for fastest rate of fire.

Issues 1 ,2 & 3 are maintenance are not related to devs.

Issue 4: Do they ignore bug reports or is it your perception that they ignore bug reports? Big difference. As one with a background in modding i can tell you here and now that finding and correcting bugs is both labour intensive and time consuming and therefore you should practice patience.

Issue 5: it was mentioned in one of the podcasts that they're busy with that. Estimated time of arrival is not know.

    Issue 6: Maintenance, not devs.

Issue 7: Was such a promise made?

Either way, it seems a lot of the frustration is directed at issues the development team has absolutely no control over and ranting about it to the development team is useless.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Developers created the game as we know it right? So did they simply rush through without any play testing? Do they not confer with the maintenance people to understand what the patches do or not do?

I have not experienced such lag in that mission.

What did tick me off though, was the huge lag (which is still quite bad today) in the zones with omega particles, particularly ESD, and the really poor dismissal of it by the dev who said "Meh, it should fix itself in 72 hours".

It's great how at least one person always has to show up to say something along the lines of "I've never had a game bug or lag or disconnect in 99.9% of my play time" when virtually everyone ever present at any major hub shortly after the anniversary hub was rubberbanding-lagging like crazy, and when fundamental game breaking bugs are present without exception, unless of course you're not playing STO to begin with, or log in to do DOFFs only.

If you follow the instructions in this thread here:
    http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=1192081

You'll find the name of the source of the lag. Note that while the company involved does start with a "C" they're not Cryptic. If you search their name on the web you'll find a whole slew of negative reports of their capability and not much positive.

The biggest question to ask is how do we get Cryptic or PWE to drop that contract and start working with someone competent?

Press fire, count 1 2 3 4 then they work, also getting disconnected, getting to the stage that its not worth playing at the moment.

    2. Nobody at CRYPTIC/PWE knows how to do this, or cares about doing this. Would require a ground up redesign, effectively making a new game.

    3. See #1. above.

    4. Out of sight, out of mind.

    5. This would be detrimental to lock box sales, and CRYPTIC's "repeatable" content.

    6. Priority login is a myth. No more basis in reality than Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, or Alien abductions.

    7. Loyalty? Really?

#1 and #3 Do you know how much profit Cryptic made on this game in the last quarter alone? You do realize the cost of servers is minimal and is necessary cost of doing business and there fore is a tax write off right?

#2 so you are saying Apathy and Incompetence

    #4 again Apathy

#5 Foundry has nothing to do with lock box sales

#6 Priority Login may have gone the way of the Dinosaurs but it used to exist.

#7 yes loyalty and customer retention something that almost all companies value.

The internet is a complex thing OP...

However, all the lag is on your side... I havn't seen any serious regular lag since LoR launch.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

While I may not be in line with where the OP directs their ire, I have to admit that this game is giving me less reason to hang around with every patch:

    1) Longstanding issue of DX 11 random crashes in Sector Space. Still not fixed.

    2) Random crashes in DX 11 AND DX 9 in Sector Space and both space & ground combat battles whether open or instanced.

    3) Loadout bugs...still not fixed.

    4) Mobs stuck in objects that you can't shoot but can still shoot you (ESD ground mish, Undine SBZ, Bug Hunt, etc.).

    5) Bugged Specializations

    6) Copy/Pasting of event announcements leading to inaccurate rewards or wrong times. (And please don't tell me, "Well you SHOULD KNOW BY NOW!". You know who should know more than us? THE PEOPLE WHO POST THE OFFICIAL STUFF ON THE OFFICIAL PAGE! lol)

    7) The ridiculous "optionals" in Advanced STF's that fail the whole thing, allowing some lazy clown or troll to put the whole team on an hour cooldown.

    8) R&D screen that seems to pick and choose what school screen you're on so that you have to double-check every time you hit the go button so that you didn't just waste 20 hours setting the mission from a completely different school (But you can pay 17k Dil to correct that "mistake").

    9) The sluggish power tray post-anniversary patch.

This list came right off the top of my head and I could probably post more if I sat for half a minute to think about but I'm sure we've all realized that this is the not-so-new "normal" for things here. All we do is find workarounds for this garbage...switch back & forth between DX clients here...download the stand alone launcher there...slot one BOFF, reload loadout and resave everywhere...and meanwhile we keep getting getting lockboxes, lockbox ships, T6 ships, and whatever else can be sold shoved in our faces.

When stuff barely works right and the company that's half-azzing it is still trying to upsell you, then one can begin to understand the frustration. This game is starting to feel like it's run by a cable company.

That's pretty harsh Olivia, though it's 3 of the known stooges. Try talking to Borticus, SalamiInferno, ZeroniusRex or Tacofangs as so far they have proven to be very amenable towards useful and critical feedback about the game and don't require a hug and a counselling session every time someone says something needs fixing.

Not really surprising Olivia... Geko especially, has always been good at criticizing everyone else, and... well... not receptive of critique towards himself.

And in a forum where he can't punish you for not doing his bidding, all he can do is ignore you.
I am a little more surprised by Trendy and Smirk... Those are usually very receptive, so I can only assume that someone... convinced them that you're a bad person.

The lag is horrible for me as well, been this way for a month. The game is unplayable for me at this point. To the people saying "oh, it must be your ISP", go read all of the complaints across many different threads. I play several other games, Netflix, etc, and this is the only game/app that is laggy for me. Doing a tracert confirms what other people are saying, its a problem as soon as you hit the cogentco network.

Considering I've run it (and so has a lot of others) fine and dandy multiple times, it's not cryptic's servers. The Internet is more than just you and the server. It's why we have a network area, it's why I made a sticky. Now as some have pointed out cogent has been screwy lately with overseas connections and the team at PWE in Amsterdam have been working on it. as for your 4th issue - look at the dev tracker look and look for yourself. Your perception that they're ignoring bug reports may be there, but the truth is they aren't.

I am thinking the same thing. I've not said anything negative to Trendy. In fact, several times in game and on Twitter I have defended her. I am guessing someone told her to not associate with me.

Still, hopefully the new EP keeps coming through. I was happy with how quickly he responded to the dilithium weekend issue. I hope he keeps that up.

I'll be honest there's certain aspects of the game that are annoying me. None other than the load out bug and power tray lag. (Have 14 toons 13 i haven't played over the weekend as i lvled the 14th up. Logged into each to sort out dil refining and R&D projects and half of them had there boff stations and power trays emptied wtf )

I'm starting however to wonder is it the Dev's fault directly or is it pressure from management to rush out whatever content is being worked on before it has been fully tested and is finished in order to get the $$$ flowing in.

I'm sure we have all been in the situation where our bosses have tried to rush us into doing something before we were ready. My previous company constantly gave half assed training to staff and threw them into the deep end taking quires from customers without the ness skills. What happens the customer loses confidence as that person doesn't seem to know what they are doing and it reflects bad on the brand. But management is so far detached from the customer that they don't see this until it effects the bank balance.

Maybe it is a case of the Dev vs the Management Team and the Management Team asking for unrealistic targets.

I'm no fan of how this game has been run esp since Delta Rising hit and the direction the game is taking all i'm trying to do is figure out whats going on and wrong behind the scenes as something is wrong as the quality of the product has taken a major slide in recent months.

Yes the dreaded 3rd party congento network, so why are they contracting the game out in the first place rather than having their own in-house network?

Priority Login doesn't give you a faster connection or less lag. It just means that if there are so many players trying to log in that they can't all log in and they are instead put in a login-queue, you will have priorities about others that don't have Priority Login.

I don't know if - other than lauch - the game ever had to use the Login-Queue ever again. I suspect they have enough server capacity to not need it.

But whatever, it won't remove lag. ANd if you're experiencing lag and others are not, then the problem is somewhere on the connection between Cryptic's servers and your PC. It could be something in Cryptic's hands, but most likely it isn't.

What is your hardware? Myself and my son use the exact same internet connection with the exact same latency issues, however my I7/nVidia machine keeps framerates over 40 almost all the time, where his AMD/Radeon box is a giant lagfest, pulling around 10-15fps with 'server not responding' about twice as often as me. I have an older I5 that I will run STO inside a virtual machine and still end up with better framerate/network response than him. He has updated drivers and a very clean build. STO and Planetside are all he's allowed on it, but the AMD box just bites at heavy network use/demanding graphics.

If they had their own "in-house network", the only place you could play is in their house.

The Internet is not a LAN; your computer does not connect directly to the Cryptic server farm. Your ISP connects to another, that connects to another, that connects to another, that eventually winds up connecting to Cryptic. Unfortunately, the service they have (which, knowing how municipalities sometimes work these contracts, may be the only "broadband" service available in their area) is Cogent, which is a known issue.

There's not a bloody thing the devs can do about it. If there's another business ISP that serves the area, the executives could possibly do something, by changing ISPs; that, however, requires the suits, many of whom may not even live on the same continent as Cryptic, to decide that this would provide sufficient Return On Investment (ROI) to bother with. (It would almost certainly be a more expensive solution, as Cogent tends to wangle contracts on the basis of price alone, then provides inefficient service in exchange for that low price. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.)
