So I apparently suck at the racing thing. Is there ANY way to get the photos OTHER than winning a race? (I have not yet been able to win even once.)
EDIT: And please don't tell me "the race is so easy you should be able to win". I've been running it constantly for two hours.
The only other way is to buy them with lobi. 5 lobi for a box containing 2-6 photos.
Useful tricks for the race: jumping stops you upon landing and rolling stops you when you get back to your feet. Both are good ways to bleed off speed for those tight turns so that you don't go slipping and sliding everywhere. Roll or jump into the turns, re-orient and go. It made things a heck of a lot easier for me.

Run the race after you get Q to turn you into a four legged creature. Stay close to the markers and run normal speed. Only sprint when you get to a straight part or the track or when your race opponent is pulling ahead of you. Most times I can win without sprinting at all.
I'm having difficulty believing that anyone that is capable of playing STO can't complete the race. It is not easy it is extremely easy, it doesn't require fast reflexes or any real technique. I can give the NPC a head start and wait till it hits the first corner before starting.
I can't see anyway that it could be made easier. This is not meant to be a dig at other players, but really guys unless you have some form of disability this race is extremely doable.
Got my non gaming work friend to try it for fun last night, he completed it on first attempt even though he doesn't play STO.
On a different note 10x TOI which only runs once an hour to gain the privilege of buying a core that I have ground the necessary ornaments for really sucks. I usually enjoy the winter event and get pretty much everything, for now I'll continue the races for the glossies, but the items that require TOI to be run more than once can stay just where they are. Originally wanted 5x warp cores and 1x sing core, but I'm just not willing to run 60x TOI, plus the acquisition of bells/beads etc. If it was 1x10 then 1 time for each alt then OK.

I've never done it much, but figured I'd do it this year.
I failed the first run, but got into a habit of aiming for the corners and breaking my sprints by simple letting go of W a bit before I had to turn. Basically think of movement like it is in those space games that work realistically (and not like a ship in water) :P
That is, after I tried starting it a dozen times, before it actually transported me to the starting position. Most times, it just grounded me at the guy you have to talk to to start, and immediately told me I lost due to having left the course
I haven't had it myself, yet, but I have seen it happen for other people - every so often, you start the race, and you don't get an opponent. You can just walk around the track in your own time.
I think that was the first time I ever won one, in fact, after four failed attempts on the trot. I was pretty lousy at the race to start with... after a great deal of practice, I'm now only moderately lousy at it. But it can be done.
It wasnt said in the blog it would take 10 runs of tide of ice it said at least once but everything is radomised there is snowman snowball fight when there should be tide of ice which is meant to run every 30 mins the race only seems to run twice. And the expense of the sing and warp core has dampened my enthusiasm to get it
Like last year I may just get the ship and say ciao again
the current schedule seems to be:
00 tides
15/22 pvp
30 Snowverlord
45 one of the above chosen at random
Yeah. Been doing that. Problem is I lose so much speed that I MAYBE get within sight of the finish line before I lose.
I really really wish there was some way that didn't rely on impaired ground movement (which I suck at) ON A TIMER.... or money. Or some sort of "you tried enough times" thing - the warp slingshot mission does that after three tries!
I really wanted to get one -or all three - of these ships, being a new player this year. But it's looking like - after 2.6 hours and not a single victory or even close call - that I will likely be ditching the winter ships, because alongside my full time job, I don't have time to run this race 300-500 times or more!!!! in order to win them.
once you figure out how to win it you should be able to do it in one or two tries per char per night.
I did it for the first time last night, having skipped it last year, and won it 2 out of 3 tries. The loss was me sliding out of bounds once, not my competitor.
Which is not to say it is easy. Ive played a lot racing games over the decades and ice/slick is a common theme in many of them, so it was not so bad for me. But Ive been there... spent 100s of tries on things before when it did not click.
I basically did this ice race as a stop/start line segment series of dashes. That is, point yourself in a straight line from where you are to the next curve. Run/sprint there and before going off the track, roll (stops you cold). Turn, point yourself in a straight line to the next curve, and repeat. It is a long race, so just keep doing this. You need 2 keyboard keys and the mouse to steer ... sprint key, double tap forward key to roll, and that is all you need -- fancy moves with the left/right keys etc are not required.
Issues with a laggy connection or a slow mouse might get you. My mouse is really cranked up all the time -- it can go to the extremes of the screen by moving 1.5 inches in any direction TOPS. Folks that need to pick the mouse up and put it back on the pad to go across the screen cannot play games well with such a slow movement setting. If your mouse is super slow, consider turning it up a notch. Driving with the keyboard ONLY is possible but slow. Your keyboard turn rate is simply nowhere near what you can do with a good mouse, talking seconds to turn vs instant, if you wanted to do a 180 (not required in the race, but there are a couple of near 90s).
I did have a few minor issues in my first few runs with lag spikes. apparently if it lags while you roll you'll stand there and not start moving again at the end.
the trick is to anticipate the drift and use it to your advantage. It's not random, it always works out the same way. It's just a matter of learning to predict it.
My good friends, the Cryptic Devs are hard at work to reproduce and distinguish the various bugs that have been reported by your faithful players, and we have an update for you located in our Gameplay Bug Report section.
Make sure to click this link to find out the latest info about these issues, and keep your eyes out for updates about incoming fixes as the team is able to correct them.
Thank you again for bringing these to our attention and for logging in to try our the events!
Best of luck against my newest creation, the ice Borg!
In order to receive full credit for completing Tides of Ice, a character must participate in all 10 waves of fighting. If a character arrives late and plays through the end of the event, they will not receive completion credit. We are currently looking into changing the number of waves a player must complete in order to receive completion credit. We also will be adding more messaging to announce when a Tides of Ice event is starting, similar to the other events in Q's Winter Wonderland.
Eligibility to purchase the new items in the Winter Store is also tied to completing Tides of Ice. Currently, the new rewards appear unable for purchase, even if the character has all of the required currency. If a player double-clicks on the items in the store, a message will appear showing how many Tides of Ice completion credits are required to unlock that item for purchase. For example, the new Winter Knitted Hat requires 5 Tides of Ice completion credits. We will be making this messaging more clear.
No. I do want those winter kit modules, but not this bad. I have holiday ornaments from last year that I spent time grinding for. I'm willing to grind out more of those if necessary, on my own free time.
But I have to complete each of 10 waves to get credit for playing it? And I have to do that multiple times per character just to unlock store items that I have to play a different event to pay for?
No.
I don't mind dropping in to the QWW occasionally, when I feel like it. Or even dedicating one or two characters to it, that I log in as when I feel like participating. But I'm not parking a bunch of alts there several hours each just to unlock one kit module for that character's class. I've done things like that in previous years, but I'm tired of it. There's other content in the game I want to play.
The time-gating grind is getting ridiculous, and this is not fun. I am NOT alt-grinding this.
Way to take what should have been a fun diversion and turn it into something tedious. I'm a fairly loyal and forgiving customer. But this? Too far, just like last Anniversary's grind went too far. I opted out of that one and I'm highly tempted to opt out of this one, too.

Completing the track is doable. Completing it and defeating the opponent at the same time... not so much. It's the speed requirement that's killing it for me. I lose so much time lining back up, stopping, whatever at corners that I MAYBE see the finish line before I lose. If I go all out on speed, I end up DQ'd for leaving track.
I'm not sure exactly how it's comparable to space combat, etc. I do just fine piloting a ship, etc. But in most cases that doesn't require turning within a specified area, force you to do it at full speed, AND have your previous momentum work against you. When i turn my ship, it actually turns.
Not a carrier driver, eh? Lol its exactly the same, the "power slide" and ice skating.
Again, you are doing it wrong. Double tap forward to roll when you reach a sharp curve; this stops you entirely without any slide. Resume forward and sprint in the new direction. Do this over and over. Use your mouse to turn to the new direction instantly. This will win, consistently.

I really do enjoy the additions to the Winter Event and have been having lots of fun with the Tides of Ice, but grinding to unlock items (per character) and then grinding again?
This is just ridiculous.
This is supposed to be a celebration, not a job within a job that STO has become over the years.
When even the annual celebrations are a grind-fest (even moreso this year), I think Cryptic needs to rethink their strategy on what way to keep players playing. IMO, this is only going to drive players away from these events after the "new" wears off.
With what Cryptic has done with this year's Winter Event... namely the Store-grind, I am dreading what they will do for the Anniversary and Summer Events this next year.

I've also noticed that if I let up on my forward movement when I'm on the very edge of the track, I stop a lot more suddenly than in previous years. I can no longer count on being able to slide through a patch of snow in order to make a turn.
This is under the influence of the Winter Tribble, which should help control the slide better if I am not mistaken. People who are having trouble with the slide may not be using a Winter Tribble.
I'm sure that once I make the adjustment, I'll be winning by a more comfortable margin as in previous years.
That is, if I don't get tired of it all and go do something else.

What he said.
We were all going to play the new mission anyway, in fact it's quite fun to play (when the game isn't crashing). But seriously, why lock out items until it's been played a certain number of times? You brought in a nice new system for getting the ships with alts during the Risa event this year and then continued it with the winter event ships (though it's currently broken), but then you went and declared that we need to spend about 10 hours per character to unlock items like the warp core for purchase... That's just not going to happen, and it seriously lowers my will to play the new content. Whereas if you hadn't locked it behind the ten runs, I'd probably grind the content with one or two characters just to get enough itmes to buy the cores for all 15 of my toons.

I really hope that they get rid of the flags on Fast and Flurrious next year. 3 times in a row and it wont let me pick it up. Even the participation one after 1st, 2nd and 3rd are scooped up from under my nose.

I'm guessing that they didn't want people coming into the event with a stockpile of ornaments from previous years (or bought off the Exchange) and just buying the stuff with in-game currency instead of really playing the game. And really, if it was just this one thing, I'd probably just adapt.
Tides of Ice does look kind of fun and I wouldn't mind doing it a few times just to do it. But when it feels like I'm being forced to do it and there's a possibility that it doesn't count?
I would prefer it if I could do whatever I wanted to get credit toward unlocking whatever. Instead of having to run ToI ten times to unlock a kit module, what if completing any ten activities did it? I'd feel a lot less antipathy toward the grind.
And, IMO, every activity should just award ornaments. Period. They could adjust the costs of the items and the amount rewarded for specific activities accordingly.
But when I have to do stuff like this?:
* Run a race to get 40 Q-pics. Can only run it once a day. Have to run it 25 times. Turn it in to get a free ship.
* Run a different race to get 0-6 Epohh tags. Need 6 tags to do a DOFF mission to get a winter epohh. Need to run multiple DOFF missions to raise an epohh to elder. Turn in elder epohh for 100-200 marks.
* Do the Winter Invasion to get a recipe. Turn in recipe to chef to get a mission to go collect ingredients. Buy some ingredients with EC's. Turn in ingredients to get a winter food item. Only way to get a Winter Tribble, unless buying winter food off the Exchange. Winter tribble useful for completing certain activities.
* Run Winter Invasion/Snowman Attack/Pie Eating for random ornaments. Items in winter store available for non-random set of ornaments... got to have the right ones or it doesn't count. Need to spend some of that on winter arsenal in order to collect ornaments more efficiently.
And then add these new requirements for this year's grind on top of all that?
The more I think about it, the less I want to do it.

Here, here!!
I couldn't have put that better myself. I know MMO's use the carrot & stick approach to varying degrees but do they HAVE to bludgeon us senseless with the stick before we get to eat the carrot??

I agree with that too. I don't even bother with the PvP race for the marks now, because it's not easy to do with alts because of the time restraints on when you can run it and the 24 hour doff missions instead of 20 hour. During the Summer event I do it with five toons because you can easily get five round during the Hunt and get eggs, or buy eggs if you're running low etc. But this 0-6 random tags for a race that only happens once or twice an hour and can only be run once during each time is just useless.
Personally I'd prefer if the recipes and epohh tags were just a 'chance' item for completing any of the event missions, but that all event content rewarded store currency. I also agree that the 10 times thing wouldn't be so bad if it was just "complete any ten winter events". At least that you could probably do in a reasonable amount of time for alts. Though I still don't understand the incessant need for time gates of late.

I am usually not the one who complains about paying for something.
I spent a lot of money on things I could have grinded for, but prefered to pay instead.
Looking at the missing ornaments for the Breen WarpCore, I spent a lot of ECs I have had left on my account (after buying the Palisade and Bethan Cruiser) and bought the rest I needed for the Core.
Back to the Event Store, the Core was still greyed out. Double clicking on it told me to do the mini-game for 10x.
Tides of Ice does look kind of fun and I wouldn't mind doing it a few times just to do it. But when it feels like I'm being forced to do it and there's a possibility that it doesn't count?
That's the bummer in all of this. Tides of Ice is a lot of fun, but having my Inner Min-Maxer going "wait, how many runs do I need on this character again... wait, did this one even count?" kind of dampens the experience. That and I feel like I might be giving the wrong impression to the Great God Metrics by playing it even though I disagree with the way the unlock is crediting, and the grind requirement in general. I don't want to be told "but you played it".
It would be nice if the game could somehow avoid spoiling the release of very good mission content with poorly thought out grind, but, I guess that's kind of been the running theme for this entire year.
* Run a different race to get 0-6 Epohh tags. Need 6 tags to do a DOFF mission to get a winter epohh. Need to run multiple DOFF missions to raise an epohh to elder. Turn in elder epohh for 100-200 marks.
Since the Daily Mark Boxes update, and with the increasingly likelihood that we won't be allowed to save up 'event' boxes to open on Bonus Marks Weekends, I'm giving this a pass this year - though I've got so many winter eppoh tags from last year I'm still going to be raising the little blighters for weeks before I run out!
The low frequency of the race event combined with the fact that it's just not as huge a benefit as it was before Daily Marks kind of makes it worth passing on unless you actually enjoy it. If you feel like winter eppohs are a grind - just don't do them.
I'm guessing that they didn't want people coming into the event with a stockpile of ornaments from previous years (or bought off the Exchange) and just buying the stuff with in-game currency instead of really playing the game. And really, if it was just this one thing, I'd probably just adapt.
there was a simple solution : new ornaments for the new items. no need for 10 new ornaments only 2 or 3

As Z3ndor99 said it *should* show up in Off Duty, under Head Category. Though it's not there on my Talaxian so I wouldn't be surprised if it's missing on other species too.

I believe talaxian's are bugged at the moment, as many of the " event/special " clothing has been for them.
The hats should work for other species ( SHOULD ).

Very well stated! Thank you, bluegeek!

A grind to far
No, thank you.
If you feel like winter eppohs are a grind - just don't do them.
there was a simple solution : new ornaments for the new items. no need for 10 new ornaments only 2 or 3

As Z3ndor99 said it *should* show up in Off Duty, under Head Category. Though it's not there on my Talaxian so I wouldn't be surprised if it's missing on other species too.
The hats should work for other species ( SHOULD ).
