"All Good Things" and "Yesterdays' Enterprise" clearly indicated that the Fedaration and Klingons would be at war at some point in the future. Now the Federation also has to contend with the Borg, Undine, Voth, Tal Shiar, and Iconians. The are erring on the side of caution. After all, diplomacy only gets you so far when everyone in the room wants to kill you and take your stuff.
Also, the Alliance is not going to be at war with every race in the Delta Quadrant. They already have enough to deal with in the Beta Quadrant. They see this as an opportunity for exploration and expansion. Furthermore, the Alliance is searching for answers to the Solonae sphere riddle. It seems logical that some factions (read: Kazon) will be a constant irritation, while others (read: Borg) will be downright hostile. Only time will tell.
Yesterday's Enterprise was an alternate present (2360s) that got set back to normal, and All Good Things was an alternate future that couldn't possibly have happened the way it did in that episode, so it also at least got modified.
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.
Ah, so we are taking the Dominion way in conquering the Delta Quadrant.
Go in with some flimsy diplomacy, and if that doesn't work, wipe them out.......all of them!
Sweet and my fleet follows the words of janeway in "Living witness" When diplomacy fails there's only one alternative violence Force must be applied without apology.... It's the Starfleet way we're gonna have fun

But they do point to a common thread of social/political pressures making war with the Klingons more likely (ie. it keeps happening). The fine details of history may change when that happens, but it does seem to be a historical inevitability (given this general timeframe.)
Its also safe and easy writing (just recycle and you can get the appearance of the aforementioned political depth.)

You are welcome to keep your grapple gun, as the entire player base would much rather use their Risan jetpacks we all spent hours grinding for. Thanks cryptic!
That blog sounds...ominous. Like we are going to try and undermine the Delta Quadrant through subterfuge. I suppose this is why the new Starfleet Intelligence ships don't look like standard Starfleet ships - because the Federation wants to maintain plausible deniability!
The mechanic and gameplay possibilities sound fun, my comments were regarding the lore only.
I noticed that as well about the ships and the blog about the grapple hook. It does make sense though in a way. We are going into someone's neighborhood, a neighborhood that we only know about through the perspective of one ship. I am liking the approach this expansion is taking and really looking forward to it.
In an IP where we've had rocket boots, tractor beams, and repulsor beams, and site-to-site transporter technology the best the devs can come up with is a grapple gun and a zip line?
Seriouly they couldn't come up with a line-or-sight teleporter technology to do the same thing, use the rocket boots from the Movie, or create personal size tractor/repulsor beam technology that would go the same thing?
After seeing Dinosaurs with frikkin' laser beams attached to their heads and magic fairy rainbow pony coins that rain from the sky, this surprises you? It wouldn't be an update without canon being crapped all over that much more.

Let's just ignore the numerous perfectly canon examples of characters rappelling or otherwise using mundane means of traversing obstacles. Whatever you need to do to give you an excuse to whine, I guess.

Please show me one perfectly canon grapple gun in the entire IP? The only time I can remember anyone using rope for anything is Kirk for recreational purposes or when someone's been purposely removed from all hi-tech devices as a plot device to force them to survive. The only other time I remember them using normal mundane means is ladders for tubes for maintenance or when their high tech lifts aren't available.
Otherwise, canon pretty much has them using high tech for anything, not 20th century techonogy. What's next? Giving up phasers for Trekarangs? Giving up warp drives for rocket propulusion?

Picard during the infiltration of the cardassian base....you know the one with all the lights
Grappling hooks make sense, I mean you don't want your enemy to hear transporter sounds in their base.
I was actually hoping for like super advanced climbing gloves or something like that.
Even though it is 21st century, it's probably the only method that can't be detected by sensors.
EDIT: Orbital skydiving like in JJ Trek (No hate please. Just a visual representation)! That's a covert way of entering a planet or starbase undetected by transporters... yes?
Kurland Here Kurland Here This is Kurland Kurland Kurland Here Kurland, Do you copy?
Hmmm... if we're getting Trek ninja toys, can I get dart gun? One big enough to lob spikes containing a pattern enhancer and a one-shot site-to-site transport receiver please
With each passing day I wonder if I stepped into an alternate reality. The Cubs win the world series. Donald Trump is President. Britain leaves the EU. STO gets a dedicated PvP season. Engineers are "out of control" in STO.
While it is fun it bears one question: Will you be able to use such equipment on all maps or is it scripted, limited use (like the EV suits in space) only? Because in the latter case, while nice eye-candy, I'm kind off afraid it doesn't advance the game in any meaningful way, except for creating spectacular trailers that suggest more "tactical espionage action" than the game actually offers
^ Memory Alpha.org is not canon. It's a open wiki with arbitrary rules. Only what can be cited from an episode is. ^
"No. Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects... and claw at you." -Worf, son of Mogh

"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou
Yeah, I remember all those episodes where they used stealth jet packs...
...wait, no I don't. That's not Star Trek at all.
I do, however, remember several TNG, and a couple DS9 episodes in which they went on stealth/infiltration missions in all black outfits with ropes and grapples.
I'm beginning to think that the people who scream 'that's not Trek!' the loudest are actually the people who know the least about Star Trek.
I was on about jet packs in game and yes they had jet boots in Star Trek V so get your fact straight before saying you don't remember any episodes.

Yeah the grapple gun seems a bit 20th century to me...
Sails are thousands of years old and even though we've found much more efficient and easier ways to move our ships forward they are still in use today.

Naw they will just do a joint venture and call it STO2/Grand Theft Starship lol.
LOL yeah I can't believe I forgot about all the duct tape that this game is held together with lol.
Chain of Command, and I stand corrected. My apologies.
Still you'd think that while advances in starships have gone leaps and bounds, they're still using grappling hooks and rope.
What the dev blog actually says "Grappling hooks"
Whoopi freaking do
In STO, the player usually end up as the big stick. But that happened in the TV show too.
