The gear gap is going to have little to do with the ships, man...c'mon, you and I both know that all this discussion of the ships is ignoring that herd of white elephants stampeding through the room.
Mk XIV gear and beyond...
That stuff...oh man oh man...meh.
Oh, I'm not ignoring that.
But since I have an answer of sorts on the topic, I know what has to be done if the info I was given is correct.
When the concept of MK14 was brought up, I was told that upgrading that stuff is going to be linked to crafting.
As I understand it, you get to level 15 (or maybe 20) and you make this account bound token (similar to the Rep sponsorship token) that you then send to your alts to upgrade their mk12 gear to mk14.
I'm assuming you have to master the relevant field of crafting, for example, if you want mk14 ground weapons, you have to be at the required level to make the token for those items.
I'm steadily closing in on level 15 in two fields and might be there before DR rolls out.
The others though, that might take a few more months.
I'm estimating roughly six months until after DR comes out to complete the majority of the crafting fields to level 15.

It's just one of those things, where each ship will have up to 23 slots not counting devices...folks with multiple sets for ships on multiple ships with multiple toons with multiple sets for ships on multiple ships...er...etc, etc, etc.
Know what's some speculation in regard to the T5-U vs. T6 ships with that +1 BOFF ability and the hybrid seats?
X, X, X, X, X <- hybrid seat
X, X,
X, X
X
Because they've said that the launch T6 boats will have the hybrid seat but that future T6 boats might not...basically giving them time to do that "Captain"/First Officer level of abilities for the various careers or however they decide they go.
Again, that's pure speculation. No inside info, nothing taken from anything a dev's said, no blog post, no twitter, no nothing...pure speculation.
Yes, I'm willing to go down in flames fighting against the sort of nonsense misinformation being presented...that garbage is a distraction and derails all the constructive negative feedback we could all be offering Cryptic...detracts from us being able to express our concerns that we don't want them to TRIBBLE us. It's one thing to complain about the various ways in which they are TRIBBLE us, it's one thing to complain about the various ways in which they may TRIBBLE us, and it's one thing to complain about stuff that's...well, Hell...pure fantasy.
This is why I like you.
It got me thinking, too... for all of the pearl-clutching over this 'heavy-handed censorship' people are complaining about, it's amazing how PWE hasn't just made up a new rule that says delusional paranoia is only allowed to be posted in the Ten Forward forum.
If anything needs to be a forum rule, it's to prohibit people from projecting their fantasy world they seem to believe they're living in onto a serious fact-based discussion in regards to feedback for STO.
The fact PWE allows people to show just how detached from reality they are on the forums has been plenty of evidence the censorship isn't as heavy handed as people say it is, or in my opinion? Should be.
I mean, just think how much more time and energy could be devoted to actual constructive and productive lines of communication instead of feeling obligated to pointing out that someone's make believe fantasy world they think is reality isn't actually real.
Scrap the whole T5-U idea. Instead, for 500 zen or so, you can unlock the skin of any ship you've gotten from a lockbox or in the C-Store or for Lobi accountwide and apply it to any ship of the same class.
So, everyone has to get a T6 ship, but if you pay your 500 zen, you can make your T6 Battlecruiser look like your Mogh Battlecruiser. Etc.
Cryptic gets their 500 zen per ship per account. You get a true T6 that looks just like the store one you worked/paid for.
Cryptic also saves a lot of coding and balance time getting the whole T5-U thing to work.
Well, I don't think we can push to quite that much aesthetic/performance freedom. PvPers often cite that they can adjust play strategy knowing the likely builds of certain ships and that's a valid form of metagame play. Much to my disappointment, believe me, since i'm a fan of bridge officer layout freedom, too.
I think we're likely to see an eventual rollout of (most/all) Fleet/Lobi/Lockbox/Event/C-Store ships to T6, there's just no way it can happen all at once and while it's going, they may as well milk us just a bit more with an exhaustive sequence of nickel-and-dime upgrades. Also, during this time, some build and play types are likely to fall off the face of the game for short periods.
There's too many varying interests to serve and too little dev resources for this to go over well given the current method they seem to be going with. I mean they can't really be planning to replace the entire canon of ships with these latest art styles, can they? Heck, maybe that's their angle, make the first T6 ships so objectionable that people beg them to re-gift the same ships back at T6?
Now I'm just amusing myself.
But, I'm for any idea that helps those of us who's role/style and ship skin preferences wander away from the pack and thus are likely to end up at the end of the line for upgrades.
So what, we get the ability to ugrade our ships OH BOY!, but what about our fleet mark 12 gear? huh? I cant speak for everyone but common really? You guys are introducing new mark 13 and 14 end game gear right? that means ALL my fleet mark 12 items are now obsolete! Gee thanks for that. if I had known this was going to happen i would not have put in the time and effort to GRIND, yes GRIND out fleet marks and dilithium to outfit 6 different ships. i dont really care about the ships being upgraded from T-5 to T-U. what i care is that after spending so much time and effort to get my ships geared with end game gear you devs decide oh, well lets just obsolete all the high end mark 12 items by putting in mark 13 and mark 14 gear. And dont tell me "oh, but you will be able to upgrade your gear with a small payment of zen... Because that would be just bull. you might as well tell the entire player base that has worked their butts off over the last few months that all that work meant nothing and that we should just bend over and take it in the rear. The reputaion and fleet mark 12s are the best end game gear thus far. and i can bet that if you Devs dont make the gear upgrade as painless as possible this game will lose alot of players... the T-U upgrades i can deal with but when you devs introduce new endgame level mark 12 gear with the last expansion, which was only a few moneths ago and then practically say "too bad for those that put in the time to grind out the dilithium and fleet marks to pay for that gear because we are putting in this new stuff" just screams one thing. That cryptic only cares about money and not its player base. you want the players to be happy... then either upgrade ALL the mark 12 fleet and reputation gear in the game that everyone bought from the fleet stores and reputation store to mark 14 FREE OF CHARGE!. i dont mind paying for the ship upgrades i didnt spend alot fo time getting the ships, but that gear... That is a whole different stroy. I spent a lot of hours STUPIDLY GRINDING!!! because i thought it was worth the effort, stupid me, I should have known better...

They could have done such a thing ages ago, but I suspect many people wouldn't buy skins for 25$. So they sold ships. It's funny to me how ships from different tiers have different costs, yet the work involved is pretty much the same, regardless of the ship tier. Make a model and set parameters, like hull and shield points.

We've had Mark XII gear for longer than the last expansion. I started with free 2 play and Mark XII gear was around and only obtainable in a few locations. The Mark XII gear explosion in the game started with season 6 and we've had more and more places to grab gear with all the reputation systems and fleet holdings that got added to the game.
As for upgrading gear, people have found evidence of a preliminary upgrade system on holodeck. Unlike the system they have in place for upgrading the ships, there's no indication that there is a cost yet to upgrade gear, and it seems to be not limited to just current endgame gear. When it's time, they'll release more information about the gear upgrade system, but until then, we should focus on the topic at hand which to talk about the ship upgrades.
This is one of the reasons why I pick just one ship and say, okay, I'm using this one and nothing else!
I just don't have the patience to outfit multiple ships anymore.....
I'm still thinking back to that upgrade path issue and what suggestions we could offer to Cryptic for that. Cause it's been one of the things folks have been asking for on some of the ships since they brought out the Mirror Versions. One of those, I really dig this BOFF layout things - then looking at the Fleet version and wishing that it had the Mirror BOFF layout.
If they avoided saving the data for the BOFFs in those slots when the layout was not in use, so they were just saving the data for the current layout as they are now, have to wonder how much additional storage it would require to have the various BOFF layouts from different versions of the ship unlocked if you've got that version of the ship. So if you wanted the Assault Cruiser BOFF layout on the Fleet Assault Cruiser Refit, as long as you had the Assault Cruiser...you'd have unlocked that BOFF layout for use. Folks wouldn't be able to run any ol' BOFF layout they wanted, but they would have access to BOFF layouts from the versions of the ship.

We're not moving towards season 10 right now. If Legacy of Romulus wasn't a season, then neither is Delta Rising. Seasons are smaller updates (usually a small push in the story), while Legacy of Romulus and Delta Rising are huge updates that add something new (such as the Romulan faction for LoR and the Delta Quadrant for DR).
Second, all existing content, all new story content, patrols and most queues will not require a Tier 6 or Upgraded Tier 5 starship.
what exactly is meant with "most"?
how long will this statement about the story content and all the other stuff remain valid?
Season 10.5?
No no game developer would introduce more powerful weapons and equipment without raising the difficulty of the end game sooner or later.
Looking at season 9 where the Devs were moaning about everything in the game being too powerful already a difficulty scaling is more likely to happen soon.
If they dont do it with season 10 for "MOST" of the content (which is by definition a little more than 50%) then they will do it as soon they get the next best chance to do it -> season 10.5 maybe (in 3-4 months after season 10).
Just about then every player is FORCED to upgrade or buy new ships.
Only the most challenging new level 60 content will strongly benefit from using an upgraded Tier 5 starship or a Tier 6 starship, however it will not strictly require it.
Translation:
You can play such missions in season 10 with a T6 ship and with a T5 ship.
The only difference is the amount of times you die in a T5 ship and that you need 3-4 times longer to finish such missions.
You can also play this mission in a T1 ship if you have ALOT of patience and a few days time to complete it. BUT it is possible.
More interesting is the question about what wont be possible anymore in T5 ships after Season 10.
- winning PVPs vs T6 ships
- reaching the 1st, 2nd or 3rd position in a PVE queue
- playing game content which is not meant by the "most" statement above.

I can't upvote posts like yours enough...
People seem to think these T6 Ships are existing in a pure vacuum and are completely detached from the game.
Sure "Most" won't require it, some will do and "not strictly require" is as you translated so nicely just semantics... pure wordsmithing so people aren't sh*tting themselves in anger.
It's pure PR... they can't go out and say "Everything you have payed up to 50 Bucks today will be completely useless and obsolete in 2 Months"...

It's all about practicality. Can we do everything in DR with a T5? Yes! Is it practical? No. As it has been mentioned, it's just a means of coaxing us. Nothing more.
hmm, you know pretty much every game upgrades gear and requires a regrind. Just doing this in Lotro right now... BGO raise from 10 to 15 etc etc etc
I can't imagine any way this new content would be so hard it would be too challenging for our current ships. If it is - what magic powers do the T6 ships have that make it so easy again? Boff abilty "kill em all III?"
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."

To be honest, I don't even think T6s will be the best. I think the T5-U11s will be. Its the combination of T6 and T5-Us with the new mastery tree and traits that make the ships superior to T5s. Granted you can still get most of the benefits of the mastery skills with a T5 but it wouldn't be practical. Also, like I've said before, just because other and/or every MMO makes us regrind and pay doesn't make it right. (I know this example is like apples to oranges but please take note of the point) if everyone else is jumping off a bridge, cliff, etc etc would you do the same?

I think it's the case. I don't think Cryptic flat out will say the new content will require fleet 6 ships but I'm assuming 10.5 will to be competitive. I don't understand why fleet ships cannot be upgraded to T5-Fleet Upgrade(making it T6-Fleet ships). It lowers pitch forks and keep fleet level ships top of the game.
So, at T6 players will have the option of T6-Fleet and T5-Fleet-Upgrade. T6 Fleet will have the extra slot/passive and T6-FleetUpgrade will have better hull. They both would be good but in different ways.
Before the news, I was going to get a brand new Tempest but now I'm not. I am going get upgrades fleet for the two main players I have. Then my KDF which could use a T6 is simply not getting it.
So, all the money Cryptic could of gotten vanished with all this BS news, double talking, and flat out lies and BS.
I don't mind Cryptic but seriously be more honest and transparent. Additionally, hire a staff that can actually make canon looking Federation ship.
It could be that, if you don't want to assign malicious intent, that "not strictly require" simply means that there no hardcoded barrier preventing you from starting these queues... but everything else (The T1 Miranda Analogy) still applies as the nature of an upgrade.

I agree with you. Your last statement the most. The T6 Federation starship that they have shown looks like a heavy cruiser and an advanced escort had a baby that was raised by the Elachi lol

I think a fair thing to do here would be to give FREE T5-U upgrades to all paid ships currently in game and offer a full T-6 upgrade option for a zen cost. No one wants to pay zen to upgrade to what will still be an inferior ship. Well at least I don't.
Considering what they're charging for things in Neverwinter like the $100 Dragon Born playable char, I'm concerned as to what they're going to try to charge for the first T6's.

Well if you look at it, (given their are limited information on both T6 and T5-U) T5-U11 could be equal if not better than the T6. so any 10 console T5 that has been upgraded could potentially be better. Even though the T6 has the hybrid boff slot and trait. The T6 will have less hull and shields than a T5-U11. My suggestion is that we do away with the current to be T6 ships and make T6 versions of every current 10 console T5 ship and allow full Trade ins. So we get our zen back for our paid for ships and that zen can go toward, if not pay, for the T6 version. Lobi/lockbox/event ships should get the upgrade to T6 free just as proposed. Mirror skins should be available to all ships. The hybrid boff slot and trait would be included in the T6 T5s. And then there are the case exceptions. What if I didn't purchase the C-store version or there was not one available? You would have to pay the difference to upgrade, which is fair since you have invested less. But this is because of Cryptic/PWE decision to not make a c-store version. What if I ground for everything and didn't pay a cent? well think of this as a bonus for grinding your rear off . This way people will be equal, be able to fly the ships they like, and this will appeal to long time players AND Cryptic/PWE will be able to make a profit still. Of course, new players will have to pay for everything outright which is direct profit for Cryptic/PWE.
I am not a big fan of the way Tier 5 ships are proposed to be upgraded to nicer Tier 5 ships and things that I am not a big fan of tend to be steered around and or moved on from.
In this case that would mean "protesting" by getting by with the free upgrade ships even if they would be less capable than Tier 6 ships, or weaning myself off of STO until I just play more of something else to the point STO becomes irrelevant.
It saddens me to see the game do something that harms itself and I believe the proposed upgrade system for Tier 5 ships does some serious harm to the game and ultimately the companies involved.
I am not opposed to paying to upgrade my ships, in fact here is my counter-proposal.
Upgrade tokens would cost 500z and be tradeable items.
There would be an Upgrade Tab in the ship selector or new NPC interaction screen.
The tab remains greyed out if the highlighted ship is ineligible for an upgrade.
There would be an adequate dialogue box for the confirmation that indeed that is a ship one does want to upgrade.
The upgrade to Tier 5 Upgraded would reward this:
Ship hull and shield scalability
Ship Mastering levels 1-4
Price 1 Upgrade Token
ALL Tier 5 ships including those excluded from the initial proposal would be eligible for this uprade to an enhanced Tier 5.
This upgrade allows the Vo'Quv, Mirror Ship, FC Ship, etc captains to partake in the new Tier 60 queued events that would require stronger than Tier 5 ships.
The Upgrade from Tier 5 U to Tier 6 Prototype would reward this:
+1 Universal Console slot; only universal consoles could be placed in this slot.
+1 Boff ability; one Ensign level Boff would be upgraded to Lt. Universal and any ship without an Ensign would receive one Ensign Universal, I.E. Atrox, FPER, Nicor, etc.
Price 1 Upgrade Token
Previously excluded Tier 5 ships from the original proposal would not be eligible for this upgrade.
All previous free upgrade eligible ships would again be upgraded to Tier 6 Prototype for free.
I could see the price of Tier 6 ships being 3500z with the inevitable upgrade to Fleet Tier 6 in the future for another 500z for a total of 4000z for a top ship.
A tier 5 upgraded to Fleet then to T5U and finally T6P would cost 4000z for a top ship without the "true bells and whistles" of Tier 6.
I have little doubt that Tier 6 ships with their Special Boff powers and perhaps "transforming" ability ala DSD (Transforming Broadside Cruiser anyone?) and Ship Trait unlock will be very desirable BUT with a proper upgrade of Tier 5 ships the continued sales of Tier 5 ships would not dry up.
The continued health of the game and Cryptics bottom line would ensure many more future years of mine and many more players' enjoyment playing STO and that is something I would be willing to pay for.
Gotta love the forum migration and the havok it wrecked with join dates and what-not...
Myself, I've been here "a while". Specifically shortly after F2P hit, missed the freebie Oddy but still got the 2yr anni accolade on my original. Original, KDF Tac, and Fed Engie has the IDIC tribble from European launch weekend.
Back then, the "beef" with STO was the "lack of content". Most "from Beta" type players had ground out both Mk XII STF sets (back in the day when they were random rewards, not on the Rep system), enogh Mk XII STF ground sets to equip either their main away team or their entire bridge staff, probably had enough Mk XII purple weapons in every weapon flavor to outfit their ship, and another set of every flavor Mk XII purple with [Borg] on it, etc. etc. Sometimes on 10+ alts...
People were "leaving in droves". Without the carrot (aka promise of more power from the newer gear), there was little need to play STO anymore on a daily basis. These people would come back for the FEs (once a week for a month) then disappear into their other games again until the next FE advanced the story an hour... :P
Therefore, it doesn't matter whether or not "other MMOs" do this and "it shouldn't have to happen here". Human nature has proven that if the carrot of advancement is removed from a game, which means that the game "looses it's challenge", people will no longer regularly play it until such time as said challenge is restored.
T6 is, obviously, pushing the carrot again. This time, Cryptic's not exactly waiting a year or so after they "run out" of ideas and let the playerbase stagnate at T5.5 They're pulling the trigger early and moving the game along at a decent pace one might figure, I mean, it was back in S6 that T5.5 was introduced, almost 2.5 years ago...
Now, could Cryptic actually make the content that revolves around this gear acquisition challenge more interesting, instead of it coming across as a grind? Yeah, they could. Fleet marks everywhere. Make the payrates of missions "more uniform", so people aren't rushing to the same mission / area for the specified prize. This, however, is a story for another thread...
I agree with you. Your last statement the most. The T6 Federation starship that they have shown looks like a heavy cruiser and an advanced escort had a baby that was raised by the Elachi lol
Yep. Their trick of making people "pay twice", if not more, for their ship(s). As evidenced by the entire Galaxy revamp (IMO), the "canon, hero, iconic, from TV, etc." ships aren't ever going to be made "truly powerful", because if the canon ship was a top-power level ship, nobody would be willing to buy more ships - the whole "I got my favorite ship and it is one of the strongest" deals would discourage further monetary investment - so they put the power(s) into the oddball "funky" ships and leave the "hero" ships at just powerful enough to survive and not feel truly gimped, but obviously still gimped enough to spawn 2 multiple thousand post complaint threads...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...
To rob a line: [quote: Mariemaia Kushrenada] Forum Posting is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever. However, opinions will change upon the reading of my post.[/quote]
I haven't played since the last FE, and I'm only checking the site every 4 weeks and sometimes listen to new eps of Priority One while playing other games (the irony) so forgive me if I'm not up to date on this. This thread is also a bit insane to read through with 250 pages.
What is a T5-U11 ship and why would it be better than a T6? What I see from that comparison table in the dev post is that upgraded T5 ships are lacking a special BO, a mastery level and a trait. How is that even close to equivalent?
I don't mind that there will be upgrades and that they'll cost money for most ships. I really don't care. But I do care that my old ships don't seem to be the equivalent to new ships even after the upgrade. I don't want to be forced to use ugly original Cryptic ship designs. I'm sorry, but the designs of the last 10 ships or so they cranked out just weren't Star Trek. They were hideous. If the best stats will be exclusive to ugly non Star Trek ships then I'm out for good this time.

HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!....................................No!
They could have done such a thing ages ago, but I suspect many people wouldn't buy skins for 25$. So they sold ships. It's funny to me how ships from different tiers have different costs, yet the work involved is pretty much the same, regardless of the ship tier. Make a model and set parameters, like hull and shield points.
that shows me that you are really lying to the players and trying to hide the truth about the season 9 nerf and what you do with season 10 now
in no way anything i wrote did violate any rules
Oh yeah, now I see what you mean.
This is one of the reasons why I pick just one ship and say, okay, I'm using this one and nothing else!
I just don't have the patience to outfit multiple ships anymore.....

Seasons are smaller updates (usually a small push in the story), while Legacy of Romulus and Delta Rising are huge updates that add something new (such as the Romulan faction for LoR and the Delta Quadrant for DR).
what exactly is meant with "most"?
how long will this statement about the story content and all the other stuff remain valid?
Season 10.5?
No no game developer would introduce more powerful weapons and equipment without raising the difficulty of the end game sooner or later.
Looking at season 9 where the Devs were moaning about everything in the game being too powerful already a difficulty scaling is more likely to happen soon.
If they dont do it with season 10 for "MOST" of the content (which is by definition a little more than 50%) then they will do it as soon they get the next best chance to do it -> season 10.5 maybe (in 3-4 months after season 10).
Just about then every player is FORCED to upgrade or buy new ships.
I completely, without a doubt, agree with you
Can you please look at my idea then?
I can't imagine any way this new content would be so hard it would be too challenging for our current ships. If it is - what magic powers do the T6 ships have that make it so easy again? Boff abilty "kill em all III?"
The T6 Federation starship that they have shown looks like a heavy cruiser and an advanced escort had a baby that was raised by the Elachi lol

nice so we get to buy the
Peghqu' Heavy Destroyer &Daeinos Heavy Destroyer from the c store apparently
but all the lvl12 gear we just ground and fleet gear we get is being nerfed
i did find a new theme song for delta riseing tho https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwhAq3F8NCE
It's not being nerfed. It's being made obsolete.
