Well I don't know too much about the technical side of computers, but sadly, this might not help me
My system is an emachines T3642, S/No XC67C 500 02367, had for a few years, and plays STO fairly well at full resolution, until the more-graphic intensive areas (like the Solanae Dyson Sphere). I know I probably should have posted this sooner, but yeah
Well I'm sorry but I don't know too much about that machine of yours.
*EDIT: Corrected error in last post, not Win 98 but Win XP*
My idea regarding the files was that under Win 7 the patcher patches a wrong file or patches a file in the wrong way and thus causes this crash.
But that's total guesswork.
However I today managed to get the game working on my own Win 7 machine though it's probabaly the most unorthodox (read: wrong) method I could think of and there's absolutely no guarantee it works.
I've read there are people who are having problems with the graphics setting under DX11 so I opened up the
[...]\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\Localdata\gameprefs.pref
with the editor and changed
PrefEntry SystemSpecs.isDx11Enabled 1
to
PrefEntry SystemSpecs.isDx11Enabled 0
this resulted in the game to make a bit of a fuss while starting up since the file was obviously in an improper setting.
As a result I still got a "whitebox flash".
BUT!!
I then let it stand on the "Legacy of Romulus" screen for about 30 seconds (may take longer on slower machines) and it told me graphics had been reset.
May or may not work on other machines, is most certainly not the right way to manually corrupt a config file but after that I got into the login screen and the game seems to run now.
Oh and after looking into the pref file again it's once again set to

so whatever...
That is one silly workaround, but hey you can play now.:)
Anyways hope the rest of you guys can get on soon. I'll keep checking in.
I forgot about this forum.. ..I am glad to report that i am back in STO.. however i wish the best of luck to everyone who still isnt abel to get in. I know the feeling. I hope you all get back in soon.
Well no matter what I tried i kept getting error id 25664664. Cryptic "customer service" has been 0 help. After the automated reply i got 1 run in safe mode.. and 2 try verifying files, followed by a "how did we do" customer service survey... lol.. You can imagine my comments to the survey.
What i think is error id 25664664 refers to a software conflict between games. No direct evidence to support this theory other than the fact that i deleted STO and reinstalled and still had same error.. Then i deleted a LOT of old/unused programs, games, emptied the recycling and then defragged the drive. Then, when I reinstalled STO a 2nd time after the mass wipe it ran normally again. Still not sure where the error was coming from, searched forums and never saw any comments from cryptic even though error id has been reported on forums since the launch of season 8. Just tossing out my "fix" in case anyone reading this is facing error id 25664664.
read thru this thread and have the exact same problem except I get to the launch screen and when I hit play I get the crash to desktop with this error message
fatal error direct 3D driver returned error code D3DERR_INVALIDCALL while creating a render target texture
Technical details DERR_INVALIDCALL while creating 2D render target texture 6144x4096 (RETEX_NVIDIA_INTZ using 6,0 samples GS N failed surface 0x 034C8550 "point shadow map" 2 0x1 c. )Intel(R) HD graphics
never had a problem in the past even with 8 and 8.5 updates unlike some others here.
run this on a laptop core i7 and 6mg ram, onboard graphics only though ( was too cheap to get the one with the dedicated NVidia card....D'OH).
don't know if this is of any use for you techies, I have no clue about any of it except I think may be tring to render at too high res for the machines screen.
hope this helps someone. sent it in the auto error report to cryptic , but prolly just disappeared into the aether........
