There are channels for in depth discussion of gameplay mechanics and other topics, ESD zone chat is a healthy mix of everything.
You get the glue sniffer types that think its funny to repeat words over and over, you get people buying and selling stuff sometimes, discussion of the issues of the day, people teaching and learning about the game, asking for and receiving help, etc etc.
ESD chat is the same as it was when i last played a bunch on my Starfleet toon. Terrible.
I've not seen its like in other MMOs. Not to ESDs depth of derp. People somehow feel obligated to spew their brand of nonsense into ESD chat. Is it a Tourette's? Some sort of Trekkie/Space Communism thing? Sociopathy?
Thankfully, it is very easy to turn off the chat while there.
You must not play any MMOs then, The only game where chat is decent in ANY WAY that i have played is DDO and that is only because so few people play the game.

Barrens chat was very stupid in its day, but not so derpy. Lions Arch is nowhere as derpy as ESD.
ESD seems to delight in religion and politics, along with Gorn. At least two of those are generally not reasonable to discuss with strangers.
There is so much wrong with this, I'm struggling with where to start.
I've only read this opening post - so I am sorry to any other person who may have posted the same or similar to me - not stealing your thunder, just feeling too lazy to read 4 pages
Right, lets get to it.....
"unfriendly if not hostile social environment." - So random people expressing their opinions (or telling bad Gorn jokes) you define as "hostile".... if you are really that sensitive, you should not be in an MMO (in my opinion).
"That's the real reason so many players avoid the games social hubs." - unless you have proof of this, this is an opinion not a fact - people avoid social zones for "personal" reasons, don't try and pass your opinion off as if you are some mighty warrior of truth, when you have no clue.
"the majority of players will....." - I'm part of the majority and I don't recall giving you permission to speak for me, as far as I am aware, I speak for myself. And as I do not see any form of proof you speak for other players - you act on your own.
"I don't care how pretty you make ESD, or any of the other social hubs of the game" - so why comment on them if you do not care? ---- Trolling then?
"As long as the studio refuses to address or police certain disruptive activity" - in your narrow minded opinion.
"players will continue to avoid these zones" - Really, as they seem quite busy to me, they almost look if I dare say, as busy as normal. Did you not send the memo to avoid social zones to prove your point?
"People will flee the zone to avoid the party amp bombing" - if you say so... let me know when people start doing that, will be nice to login to an empty zone and not suffer lag - will make a change from login in to a zone WITH party amps, that people just ignore and carry on as if they are not there.
"It's not the architecture, layout, or utility of the zones that's causing the under utilization of the social zones. It is the "feel" of the environment caused by the activities of a minority of the player base." - and you are a minority of the forums, making lots of noise with no actions... if you are so hurt, then don't login to the game, don't spend money in game and don't login to the forums - actions speak louder than words... so far, you're full of words with no actions. (btw, can I have your stuff when you leave :P)
"been over 6 months.. The studio put these things in game.." - false information (aka, liar) - social zone items have been around a lot longer than 6 months. I know, I own the first one created (so do many other LTS people who post on the forums) and used it the day it came out.... but please, carry on trying to feel self important - it's quite amusing.
"So players feel safe an un harassed visiting them" - feel safe? you're in a fake world, with a fake person, in a fake environment, sitting in your own home (or your "moms" basement - I wont judge) - if you don't feel safe here - you, never, will!
All in all, social zone items do not stop you playing the game, I personally hate the disco balls, but they do not stop me doing what I want to do in the game and they are fun for others.
As for zone chat, I had mine closed for 2 years... if zone chat upsets you, don't use it (d'uh).
This reminds me of a joke....
Blonde goes to the doctor, says "it hurts when I do this...."
Doctor says "well don't it then!"
It is this simple ^^
Normally I just read the forums to get my giggles and facepalms in, but sir I had to acknowledge the awesomeness that is your post.

Haters Gorna hate. :P
Seriously though, why care about the party stuff at all? It doesn't stop you from doing things.
Constant arguments. Not debates, mind, but stupid, ill-informed, irrational, angry arguments. The much maligned Gorn jokes were welcome relief.
This, oh so this. Arguments about religion and politics. People spouting racism, homophobia and misogyny. No thanks.
There are forums I visit that have far more accomplished and well-informed debaters when it comes to politics and religion (right or left wing, theist or atheist). The same forums also lack the racism, homophobia and misogyny.
Good lord, how can anybody be annoyed by a stupid freakin' disco ball?
Oh no my toon is dancing, oh the drama of it.
In other news the new ESD is looking nice, I always wanted it to be bigger and more up to date looking vs the current small out of date Walmart ESD we have as of now.
Read through the first 15 pages or so, and I find it funny how the forum mods seem to take more action than the GMs. Page fifteen looks like Ashkray took a giant white-out marker to it.
@repetitiveepic: Would it kill you to combine all your points into one post? There's a multi-quote button.

Alrighty then, since we're playing the age card, I turned 52 last month.
- The new ESD, while nicer looking, is just window dressing. Meh. A new coat of paint on a jalopy does not magically turn it into a Ferrari. There is more to a Ferrari than two coats of Cino Rossi.
- I have no objections to people RPing. I RP. While I am not a zealot about it, I do enjoy it.
- Some people playing STO don't like RP. Just like some people don't like playing Klink.
- I usually do not, as a rule, use Disco Balls around people I don't know or in public areas. I highly resent any implication to the contrary. Regardless of how oblique it may be.
- As I stated in previous posts, there are more than enough ways to RP without drawing attention. While I'd like a better policing of the game, I can see where such would be problematic at best and downright aggravating at worst.
- I dislike people demanding I play this game a certain way in a certain manner when they ARE NOT affiliated or employed by pwe/cryptic. Reason? Because I do not do so repeatedly in public. For me to make these sorts of peremptory demands upon complete strangers would be rude and ill mannered. It also smells very strongly of disrespect for those whose viewpoint differs from mine. I make a reasonable effort to follow the game ToS. While I am hopeful others will do so as well, I am not naive enough to expect this to be the case all of the time. Nor do I expect someone from pwe/cryptic to come running ASAP because Little Billy is using bad words on the playground.
I am looking forward to the new ESD somewhat. I do go there from time to time. I do not expect others to bow before me when I do so because I have played the game longer than they have or because I have been a Star Trek fan longer than they have or because I am more important than they are.
There are a great many things about STO I dislike. There are a great many people playing STO whose actions are not what I think they should be. Whenever either of these occur, I check my Man Card. Then, I either ignore it or move to someplace else. When I cannot do so, I simply ignore whatever it is. Without drama or hysterics or teeth gnashing. When the trolls fail to get a reaction, they get bored and move on.
Yes, it really is this simple, people.
^^^^^ This. A thousand times this. Do your own thing and ignore those YOU consider to be trolls. The man is right. It really is that simple.
STO: Where men are men and the women probably are too.
I support the Star Trek Battles channel.
I've been playing since the F2P launch and I've never even heard stories of GM's showing up in game.
For a while there was a GM hosting hide-and-seek games on various maps with prizes (nothing great). She eventually had to stop and I haven't seen or even heard a GM since.

I remember that too. Never heard about GM since then either.

Bold font QFT. Some would have the roleplaying community move their operations off of social zones, or endure intentional trolling. In a way, that is demanding others to play on their terms. Which, might I add, is downright arrogant.

Some people must have had some truly horrible experiences. I have never found the chats there to be any worse than the forums. Certainly nothing that has gotten me as worked up as the OP.
Also, I haven't read the full thread yet. Have the disco balls been called as bad as molestation again yet?

Everyone is different and we all come with different tolerances. For some, certain topics are absolutely forbidden, but those same topics could be easily ignored by others.

If it was worth the development time, they'd have done it by now. Also, you have no idea how easy that is to code into the game.
Ahahahahahahahahahah
Bwwaahahahahahahahah :P
Let me guess, you haven't been around ESD much, have you? :P

Lions arch is just as derpy as ESD, and while i have never played WOW, a cousin of mine has said several times, it is jsut as bad.
Qo'nos is perfectly fine, MOST of the time, but that is because all of the 12 year olds want to play "Hero"
