This update does not change any of the things that make this ship bad. In fact it adds more things that make it bad.
- A Hangar adds nothing to a ship. Especially on fed's who do not get frigates. PvE deal plenty of aoe, so does PvP. Pets that cant take a hit are pointless. So this hangar is not an upgrade, its a placebo for people who clearly lack a basic understanding of what makes ships good.
- the console set.
Anyone worth his Rank knows that you want fleet gear in your console slots. Not gimmick console whose abilities have overly long timers. A bonus to hull plating, huh? So you are buffing a diminishing returns stat.... that basically comes for free on the fleet gear that people would slot.... uh huh. So you are actually nerfing peoples abilities by not only consuming console sots but also decrease the effect of buffs that raise resistances.....
This is bad.
- Saucer sep:
Leaving aside the fact that the GX should not be able to do it and that the separation automatically means a nerf to the ship overall power generation and firepower (by you know, removing several reactors and the 2 largest phaser arrays this side of a space dock...) as far as canon goes, we have the more important aspect: Gameplay.
You have a 3 minute power that is tied to a console slot that allows to gain a little bit more mobility.
On ships you most likely already have set up as aux2bat faw cruisers and which already turn adequately enough for that role by use of the fleet gear.
You are actively nerfing your ship to gain a power that does what you already do by use of your superior fleet gear.
And people come and cheer for this sort of BS.
- The whole update completely ignores the technical advances cryptic has made recently.
Shifting ship setups on the fly, inbuild weapons, support weapons that link to boff powers (think wing cannons here) and of course: decent boff seating. Also that raider back attack bonus?
The whole blog reads like a time traveling message from the past.
- This whole update adds nothing. In fact it is a nerf package. And a smoke screen. "See we did something!"
Yes. They did something. Something dumb. Something that pisses me off. Something that i feel is a freaking insult. And something that sews my wallet shut.
I am not opposed to buying good ships or buying upgrade for my existing stuff. What i am opposed to is when someone tries to sell a TRIBBLE as something that i would want.
Wonder how it will stack up vs the current flag ship of the federation.
The fleet version will about break even with the Odyssey three pack ships provided it switches the ltcmdr slot to a uni. With the saucer step module, you may come out a little ahead of the Ody with its chevron sep mod, since it's bonuses are a little better (better turn rate boost and less power loss). The issue, as has been brought up repeatedly, is that ltcmdr slot; the separation console will basically make you an escort carrier, but with a tank spec.
It's not as bad as some people make it out to be, but a tank spec on an escort just isn't ideal, especially since for the same price you can get an Avenger that does basically the same thing in a much more effective manner.
They talked about doing these improvements to the Galaxy X in the past but were never sure they would implement them. Some of you people say that this isn't what ANYONE wanted, well I WANTED a hanger and saucer sep. Yes, more improvements would be nice too (and I was wanting some more as well), but I will gladly take what I can get.
And as for those claiming that the Galaxy is never used any more and doesn't fit in, what corner of the galaxy are you hiding in? I see Galaxies and Galaxy Xs all the time, being used by the players in every part of the game. They are not useless ships or we wouldn't see as many being used in game. They ARE popular and still USEFUL. They DO make good tanks (not sure about healers) and they ARE more maneuverable than the Odysseys. I regularly use my gal-r and gal-x far more often than I use my Ody. The only ship I use even more is my Ambassador Retrofit.
So I hate people who insist that just because they and their friends don't use these ships that the Galaxies are useless, not popular and are not needed unless they are made far more powerful. Many of us love using these ships, not for role-playing but for actually kicking Klingons, Romulans and so on's buts. If you play these ships from more of an Engineering and Tanking angle, relying more on your engineers abilities and creating a console setup that supports this, these ships really rock. They can take a lickin and keep on tickin as the saying goes. They kick but, even if they can't deal as much damage without as many tactical abilities.
And as for those who say saucer sep for Gal-X isn't cannon, we can't be sure of that. It was only seen once and was never in a situation that called for a separation, so we can't actually claim this. Yes some manuals say it couldn't, but many of them aren't truly cannon either, so they can't be listed as canonical sources. I am totally fine with saying it could be cannon (but don't get me started on the 'new' Abram's Trek or the inconsistencies in Enterprise).
I too wish you had done more Cryptic, but thank you for what you have done! Gal-x with saucer sep and hanger will be awesome! I just hope we can use them together.
Edit: Ok, I think I'm done talking (or arguing) here. Obviously the people that are on here posting for the most part are just the ones who are upset that Cryptic didn't listen to THEM and make this game THEIR way, as though it was THEIR game to begin with. It isn't. Its Cryptic's game that they put so much time and love and money into for us to play and enjoy. But it is still THEIR 'baby', as it were. Not OURS! If they choose to revamp something in a different way then we think it should be, they have every right to. They may have an even bigger game plan overall then we know about and while this revamp fits into their plans, what the players want may not. But if someone really hates what Cryptic has done, then maybe they need to leave and go create their own game. Cryptic has the blessings of CBS, Paramount and StarTrek.com. And these groups are always looking over Cryptic's shoulders, making sure what they are doing is Trekish enough. And if they are happy about everything, maybe we should be too and not always jumping all over them for everything they do. I'm done with this forum thread. Peace! I'm out!

Thank You, Cryptic......even when I don't agree with all your decisions....Thank You for Star Trek Online!
^Logically, everything must be measured by PvP success rates, as PvE is easier.
I also want to point out that just as the Galaxy revamp utterly misses the target, the quote used at the beginning of the blog post misses the thematic target, and this is no coincidence! It reads:
"Let's make sure history never forgets... the name...Enterprise! Jean-Luc Picard
Well, that quote actually referred more to the Ambassador-class Enterprise-C in the context of that episode. The quote that should have been used (in the context of a Galaxy-class reboot) was from the pilot episode of TNG:
"Let's see what this Galaxy-class starship can do!" -- Jean-Luc Picard.
I submit that this uncaring sloppiness bespeaks the overall disdain Cryptic holds toward the Galaxy-class, and TNG in general.
I call for an initial one day boycott of STO until the devs bend to our collective TNG-loving will!
Too Little, Too Late. My Galaxy-X will be remaining in dock as a museum piece.:mad::mad::mad:
Well done Cryptic, you have had months to get it right and you still mess it up. I'm beginning to think you can't get anything right, ever. A Massive Cryptic Fail.
Thus solving the problems of the Galaxy-class and Galaxy-class Dreadnought once and for all. I look forward to no more future threads regarding the perceived weaknesses of the Galaxy family.
Since it's clear every player who has wanted the Galaxy-class and Galaxy-X revamped has gotten their wish, and everybody is happy and content.
I also want to point out that the free Galaxy bridge pack that can be had here (which I already bought and regret) has numerous geometry problems with boffs floating off their seats, stuck halfway in the floor, etc. I would LOVE some assurance that this *****commonly reported******* bug is being addressed. You don't give away a bug, and hope that people will continue to buy from you. Allergic to $?!
While I am grateful about a rework of the Galaxy ships line, this wont change much. Sure the hangar bay, even if it wasnt needed, will help a bit. If equiped with runabouts will keep enemy ships locked so the lance can be fired better, or if scorpions are added will help DPS in PvE.
Sadly for sure the phaser lance will still suck by missing alot in the normal mode, aswell as having the same low dmg compared with other damaging skills from other skips. Will have to see the new wide beam attack, probably a mini thalaron attack like, or a FAW maybe. And I am curious if it keeps the 25 degree angle.
Also as soo many other ppl said, a ens boff change its useless. Without a Lt.Com Uni or Tac version, the ship wont even be half way near to the other Dreadnoughts, since, if looking at the quote from the dev blog, these changes were done for that purpose. But the ship is still really weak compared with other dreads like the jem'hadar dread or the scimi dread.
Still there is little hope that maybe the fleet dread version will have a Lt.Com uni or tac version, but I doubt it since only the ussual +10% hull and shields and 1 extra console were announced.
Not really a Reboot, just a boot in the groin. Should have be called it a Re-brand, then you could have called the Galaxy-X a Galaxy-Y, as in Y would you want to buy it.
Sorry Saucer Separation and Phaser Lance Wide Beam are stupid ideas put forward by fan-boys no longer playing the game. They make no sense at all. You would have been better off removing the cloak from the console and putting it in the ship. No Fed wants to play PvP with the Klingons with their cloak advantage. Boff seating, should have much more Universal seating, have the ship as you want it. Hangar Bay, one slot, your better off with none.
Only had an hour to think about this news and the worst it seems every second that goes bye. :(:(:(

Well it's been said before. We don't want the Gal X to be a fed scimi or Jem Dread.. We just don't. What we want is for the Galaxy X to actually be useful. +20 armor/+20 plating/+1 turn is a joke in sacrifice to 2 console slots. It would be much more worth to be +11% phaser/+11%accuracy for the sake of lance than this pitiful 2pc augment.
I'd rather lose 2 turn all together if it mean the 4th tac slot and the dmg/acc boost than this drivel. Even with just the separation console, you're making it so much easier to blow up in exchange for an AoE with less damage and less accuracy?
Have they even stepped foot in this cruiser before shoveling it out into the 1week display case??
Help us Stevie D'Angelo-ni.. Subject to change may be our only hope.

Agred. But I can't say I'm disappointed or surprised. It was pretty much crystal clear that they won't change a payship that was payed for already significantly. It's just a "can't do".

Yeah, it's been said dozens of times and I'll just add my voice to those:
The Gal-X update is nearly pointless. It already has preciously little tac-seats, making the universal ensign anything BUT tactical would cripple any damage dealing potential. Not that there's much of it. Can mount cannons but hardly a single cannon skill? Woohoo, great!
And the Gal-R update is... non-existant. Even if she can tank like a champ, this game doesn't even need tanks.
At least open up all Galaxy skins for all Galaxy versions so we can have some fun with that before we put her back in the garage (or behind the shed to put a bullet through her skull.)
Agred. But I can't say I'm disappointed or surprised. It was pretty much crystal clear that they won't change a payship that was payed for already significantly. It's just a "can't do".
With Steve's arrival I was willing to put an end to my boycott on spending $ here. I was really close with the pending Galaxy X revamp since Steve has done such a great job. So out came the news.. I start drumming my wallet, read on, I effectively closed my wallet.
If Steve steps in and helps facilitate a better approach to this I will drum my wallet once more. Otherwise the boycott on season 8+ will continue.
We could make a bet what the 10th slot for the Fleet Dreadnought will be.
Even if it is a 4th Tac slot, the ship still suffers from poor turnrate and inertia and 2-3 Tac abilities with a Lt being the maximum of those. Using the console set instead of universal or fleet consoles would gimp the ship even more.
This ship is still the runt of the cruiser litter by a large margin. Of course you have a gazillion of people playing it, it is the TNG Enterprise, after all!
I am sure it drives about as many people away to play other ships or to quit playing STO, as the legendary Enterprise scrapes the bottom of the barrel as an utter garbage scow, even after this not even half-hearted revamp that fixes nothing.
There is already an 'I win' button in the game. It's called the Scimitar.
Yeah so why not give the feds a smaller one too?
Just com tac. It still has no bc no 5/3 no 5 tac consoles and no special drone ship like pet. Not so much i win left. Also basically as the content is extremely easy basically every ship used by a good player is an "i win" button.
So we still have a ship where its so slow to turn the cannon is basically useless; and they still havent addressed the problem with the basic galaxy being far to many pointless engineering consoles, how is this much of an improvement ?
The turn-rate has very little to do with the lance's inability to hit anything.
As have said elsewhere, I parked (i.e was standing stilll) right next to a unimatrix ship during an instance of HOSE once, and the lance actually managed to miss the largest NPC ship in the game (at the time) whilst sat RIGHT NEXT TO IT. That's a whole new level of lame.
That was the punishment for not flying your Fleet Nova
My initial and recent tests were all pretty much similar. I laughed when I saw this description of "Shotgun" in the separation benefit.. I was like awesome.. What are we firing off this time? Dust bunnies? Cool sawed of shotgun dude.
Take this Galaxy X back to the 2 star kitchen it limped out of.. and kill it before you put it on a plate.

Heck perhaps we should even pay them money for the hack job they did.
I too wish you had done more Cryptic, but thank you for what you have done! Gal-x with saucer sep and hanger will be awesome! I just hope we can use them together.
How will it be awesome. Separated, Its a crippled escort carrier.
Not separated its a crippled tactical cruiser.
Not seeing the AWE here exactly.
So I hate people who insist that just because they and their friends don't use these ships that the Galaxies are useless, not popular and are not needed unless they are made far more powerful. No. They do not rock. Unless you mean sit around doing nothing. Because that is what the engineering and tanking does. Nothing.
+ The most egregious part of your prattling:
You ignore the fact that the Star and Assault cruiser can both out tank and out gank the Galaxies.
The Starcruisers, science oriented cruisers have gotten a massive contender in the ambassador. A Good ship no one complained about because its good.
The Assault cruiser line, tactical oriented has gotten 2 major upgrades: Excelsior, the Regent and recently the Avenger. Both ships are superior to the GX - and i mean the updated GX.
Cryptic did nothing to aid fix the problems of the GX, they did not use the opportunity to create an interesting ship (say an in build lance weapon) that uses recently deployed technology. And i mean tech in terms of the game engine.
Heck, you could have the Galaxy R have 2 modes that shift the focus, much like veteran destroyers or the new dysons.
Te GX could have gotten an in build lance gun, and both ships could have had a nice set that actually does something useful and is not an freaking stealth nerf.
Instead Cryptic FLAT OUT ignored the Galaxy R, and slapped a hangar onto the GX for NO EFFING REASON.
And you lot treat it as if a hangar is something to be desired. Or a set that nerfs you.
I just do not get how you can expect people to just be happy with this sort of BS.
These changes are not only dumb, they are also uninspired and a big fat declaration of creative bankruptcy.
And a large FU to the Galaxy.
Do the ships need to be a fed scimitar? Most assuredly not, the scimi is what i hope remains a one time slip of sanity.
That does not change the fact that cryptic has, especially after hyping it up, dropped the ball on this so severely that the Earths core has filed a complaint already, because of the noise pollution.
I probably would have been more effective in my trusty Fleet Nova - can do nasty things to NPC ships with that little beast of a ship!
Which is ironic when you think about it - I can be more effective in a small Science ship than I can in a Dreadnought Cruiser!
I'm ocnvinced that the Dreadnought comes with a drunk Tactical Officer who is completely unable to hit anything with the lance, the idiot!
I am rather convinced that you shouldn't have turned scrooge on spending skillpoints in Weapon Accuracy. You really should have give it just one more point, so that at least you have 2 points in Accuracy.
The only hope we have is that De Angelo reeds all this feedback (thing that I really doubt in extreme) goes in to the Geko offices and makes the proper changes for at least, the Fleet Galaxy.
Is clear that Geko dont like canon and iconic ships, just look at the Nebula, Galaxy, Intrepid, Defiant, Akira and the Romulan DD. So, until Geko gets in his way, we are stuck with horrible non-canon ships if we want to be competitive.
I've been hoping for a Galaxy class revamp for a long time, and now that it's here I have to say I'm rather disappointed. The Dreadnought seems to be the only one to receive any significant changes, meaning the Galaxy retrofit is still useless. A hangar and a new boff layout would've been nice on the see on the retrofit. A new console layout on both it and the dreadnought would've been nicer.
People have been wanting a revamped Galaxy class wouldn't be the useless ship that it is today. All Cryptic has done is give the Dreadnought a universal boff slot, hanger, and the saucer separation it should have had ages ago, and give the retrofit the ability to move during saucer separation. Woopty-freakin'-doo.
Excelsior/Fleet Excelsior is an awesome ship - it's a good tank (not that tanks are really necessary anymore) but it has teeth and can return the favour. Which is what the Galaxy should be able to do, but can't.
I didnt name the Excelsior, also Geko said that he loves that ship.
Nebula/Fleet Nebula - not great, but has some nice sci tricks thanks to a decent BOFF seating arrangement.
Nebula is useless. Is not the best healer, is not a tank, is not a good debuffer, and is not good at anything. I drive this ship even in PVP, I maybe the only one that do that. I know this ship and the temporal or the voth are so much better that is a joke. Even the Tier 5 console is a joke with that cooldown.
Intrepid/Fleet Intrepid - has some great sci abilities at it's disposal and a decent gimmick console (ablative armor generator)
Lol, nothing that the vesta, voth or temporal cant have. Also the wells have the temporal console wich is a lot better than the armor. And the intrepid Sci ens just TRIBBLE it. It cant rotate EPtX with out doffs and you need the doffs to improve your sci. So again, the vesta, temporal and the voth sci are a looooooooooot better.
Defiant/Fleet Defiant - I daresay some would argue that it IS the best escort in the game with the Fleet version having five tactical console slots, and a BOFF seating arrangement to make good use of them.
Jemy has 5 console slots, better turn rate and a lot better Boffs. And is not the only escort. The tact ens does really bad to the Defiant. And lets not bring romulan escort, with the Romulan Battlecloak and singularity jump.
Akira Great console options, good BOFF layout, good DPS, decent gimmick consoles and a hangar. Nothing wrong here either.
And really, really bad turn rate for an escort that makes it a big target in PVP. If you see an Akira in the oposite team, she is going to be the first and easy target, especialy for Romulan Vapers.
Which brings us to the Galaxy. They're making two of it's gimmick consoles into a set, but what else does it have going for it? Well, it DOES tank well - but this game doesn't really need tanks anymore. And whilst it can tank well, it can't return the favour in any measurable way. It's hindered by too many Eng BOFF slots with shared cooldowns, and the fact remains that there is nothing that the Galaxy can do that another cruiser can't do better.

Thanks for making this possible, I plan on getting the fleet galaxy dread asap I hope it has better boff seating though.

But ok, cryptic, you obviously do not want money. I can respect that.
oh btw: To all those who posted something along the lines of "glad they listened to the players":
No they did not. In fact they made an extra effort to present a big honking FU to the players.

Well done Cryptic, you have had months to get it right and you still mess it up. I'm beginning to think you can't get anything right, ever. A Massive Cryptic Fail.
Since it's clear every player who has wanted the Galaxy-class and Galaxy-X revamped has gotten their wish, and everybody is happy and content.
Now how about improving the Fed Heavy Escort Carrier while you're at it
Sadly for sure the phaser lance will still suck by missing alot in the normal mode, aswell as having the same low dmg compared with other damaging skills from other skips.
Get the Forums Enhancement Extension!
Yeah so why not give the feds a smaller one too?
Just com tac. It still has no bc no 5/3 no 5 tac consoles and no special drone ship like pet. Not so much i win left. Also basically as the content is extremely easy basically every ship used by a good player is an "i win" button.
That was the punishment for not flying your Fleet Nova
Take this Galaxy X back to the 2 star kitchen it limped out of.. and kill it before you put it on a plate.
So what you are saying is that we should thank them for being dumb about this.
Heck perhaps we should even pay them money for the hack job they did.
How will it be awesome. Separated, Its a crippled escort carrier.
Not separated its a crippled tactical cruiser.
Not seeing the AWE here exactly.
I am rather convinced that you shouldn't have turned scrooge on spending skillpoints in Weapon Accuracy. You really should have give it just one more point, so that at least you have 2 points in Accuracy.
Is clear that Geko dont like canon and iconic ships, just look at the Nebula, Galaxy, Intrepid, Defiant, Akira and the Romulan DD. So, until Geko gets in his way, we are stuck with horrible non-canon ships if we want to be competitive.

WARSHIP baby... WAAAAARSHIP. as much i'll love that sep on my gal-x.... still a subpar cruisin-boat ^^...
not to mention the "REBOOT" (?! ^^) of the gal-r. not even worth a lol, that label just makes me sad.
I guess I'll just keep flying my Fleet Excelsior.
I didnt name the Excelsior, also Geko said that he loves that ship.
Jemy has 5 console slots, better turn rate and a lot better Boffs. And is not the only escort. The tact ens does really bad to the Defiant. And lets not bring romulan escort, with the Romulan Battlecloak and singularity jump.
And really, really bad turn rate for an escort that makes it a big target in PVP. If you see an Akira in the oposite team, she is going to be the first and easy target, especialy for Romulan Vapers.
On that we agree.
Sorry for bad english.
