The scary future of Escorts according to my speculation/ guess

fubbefubbe Member Posts: 0 Arc User
So cruiser commands gets released, and as a cruiser captain i am absolutely estatic.
Finally i can support! Finally i can actually be useful, and not just a snail of a meat shield.
And barely even that since a certain other class seems to steal all the threat.

Now the bill nye ships gets their secondary deflector, unique i like. Boosts their abilitiy to.....science things.....yes.

And then it struck me, there is no way in hell. Escorts are left out, and even IF they where, the escort captains would throw a b!tchfit out of this world!
*gasp* The others get awesome and we don't!? 0.0

Now don't misunderstand, i have nothing against escort captains xD
But there's no denying that Escort currently sits on an enormous advantage.

So unless you got a bachelor in Cruiser command or Sciency wiency.
You will be left in the dust.
Now I'm not gonna bother with the PVP aspect, cause i can live with that.
Ship is only as good as it's captain bla bla.

What irks me is how escorts make me and my ship feel so utterly useless. :(
Like wth am i even doing here, defending this starbase?
Technically I'm slowing you down, cause with an all escort team you could probably steamroll this attack in half the time.
Maybe laying on a bit thick, but point proven i assume.

So like i said i was thrilled with commands, made me a little more useful in battles.
Gave my class a sense of purpose, I support my team, that is MY job, that's my SPECIALITY.

But I fear that with whatever is in store for the escorts, i'll be rendered useless again. :<

Am I the only one scared of this?

Geko has said more then once that he feels that cannons on Escorts are overpowered; but they could never reduce the cannons without a major nerd rage on the forum. The buffs to Cruisers and Science were put in place to try and get around needing to nerf Escort cannons. I do not expect to see any bonuses to Escorts.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

    Precisely this.
It's been insinuated several times that the motivations behind the new features for Cruisers and Science Vessels is to help those ships get on par with Escorts. Because as it stands, as pretty much everyone has noticed, the advantages that Escorts have in their ability to project damage is unprecedented. Why have support ships when the damage dealers simply atomize the enemy faster than the enemy can effectively damage them?
So Escorts won't really be touched here. They won't get nerfed in any way, really. But they won't be getting any of these new features, either. They seem to do spectacularly fine with what they have now.
And really, these kinds of boosts to Cruisers and Science Vessels benefit Escorts, too, if indirectly. So it's not like Escorts are truly "getting nothing".

Escorts aren't the only ship type to not get anything special like comm arrays or aux deflectors.

Actually one power i wouldn't mind seeing on Escorts, is somehting that dumps all threat.
Would make it a lot easier for us cruisers to do our supposed job.

I'm an Escort Captain and I can admit Escorts and Dual Heavy Cannons have Dominated the game for years and most everything else was obsolete and finally now Cruisers and Science ships have much needed buffs and abilities that means they can be on par with Escorts and have their own game style and advantages that aren't high DPS.

The Escorts don't need a new Systems or advantages they already have a large advantage I love the new systems the Cruisers got and that the Science ships will be getting but I doubt Escorts will be given a new system since the purpose of the Commands and Secondary Deflectors is to give Cruisers and Science ships an advantage that they lacked.

Escorts are blah blah. Its cryptics fault that escort damage in PvE is so off the charts. With all the built in critH, CritD, and Acc through skills , consoles, weapons what do you think would happen when a ship with limited arc lines up a NPC and even though the NPC will have 100K HP the escort will out damage the NPC because well the NPCs are dumb. Every NPC at max level shoul dbe able to use the same amount skills you do. So a cruiser NPC at level 50 shoul dhave the full compliment of a level 50 PvEer then we will see how you feel when it take you 30 minutes to kill a ship in a sector defense with your croooser.

If they buff escorts then it makes the whole boost to cruisers and science ships kind of a waste of time. Escorts are fine as they are.

Yes I want to fly the two easiest ships to fly in the game a cruiser and sci to a lesser degree. Cruisers are nothing more than the nascars of the game choose right instead of left on this mission buff and circle. I have little more respect for sci because a sci ship with sci abilities do have some arc restrictions. A properly piloted escort is hands down the best damage ship and rightfully so because there is a little more skill and risk involved unless its a FAWscort. The escort hate in this game is more about people unwilling to put int he time to learn how fly one to understand the beauty and power it wields. I leveled my first 2 toons in this game after OB in a cruiser and will not go back.

Speaking as someone who primarily plays a sci character in a sci ship, I was frequently entering STF's etc only to find myself obsolete. What is the point in a sci ship when you are with a team of escorts who:

    - have sufficent DPS to render everything dead before anything sci related can do anything worthwhile
    - don't require healing, as they're tank-ish enough in their own right to survive long enough to kill whatever is shooting at them anyway.
    - in many cases (sci Captain in an escort for example), could use sci abilities just as well as in a sci ship.

Couldn't agree more back when I flew my Wells I used to fell the same in STFs eventually I just felt so useless in game that now my Wells is Rusting in the Shipyard on an unused Science Character.

Don't get me wrong the Wells had some good Tricks and Abilities but at the end of the day nothing can mach a DPS of 30,000 by duck taping dual heavy cannons to the hull so I stopped using Science ships and turned to Escorts.

They don't need Healing, They can Tank by themselves, They Melt everything under their forward Firing Arc and Because NPCs are so dumb keeping Enemies in my Firing Arc is no problem and I usually Obliterate anything before it can do any significant damage to me except for Boss NPCs such as Donatra's Scimitar.

But seriously, the reason for the Cruiser and Sci buffs were to bring them in line with Escorts. Escorts have better damage, but not some of the cool gadgets.

Escorts require little Skill they are Easy to pilot for me keeping things in Arc is no problem and with such a ridiculously high DPS it can ravage anything in it's forward arc while effectively tanking incoming Damage I used to be a Cruiser Captain but I felt tired of being obsolete in PVEs so I switched to Escorts and never found a need to use any other ship, They Could Tank, Deal Massive DPS and were more efficient than any Cruiser or Science ship I had Piloted before.

I think it would have been hard to anticipate at launch.

But looking at the game and looking at the IP, I think it would have made more sense to have Cruisers as highest DPS, Science as Control/Heals, and Escorts as Tank/burst DPS. And shuttles as pure tanks. (It also would have made more sense to align escorts with engineers like Sisko or Smiley O'Brien; escorts are engineer designed. Light cruisers and shuttles are designed by or captained by former helmsmen. Your tactical/ops people seem more likely to command heavy cruisers.)

We're close to that but I think what makes it hard to grasp is that tanking in Star Trek canon isn't about being an armored damage sponge the way a fantasy game is. It's about being a nimble "draw their fire" small target.

It does play out somewhat that way in STO the way mechanics have gone but I think the devs could probably go very far embracing this entirely with evasion tanking as the core method of tanking in the game.

I really do not believe the IP shows that smaller ships are more tanky. The Defiant needed two Mirandas as escorts at the Battle of DS9 just to draw fire away from it. :)

Cruisers should get special Cruisers-only beam arrays. Heavy Beam Arrays that aren't gimped with the stupidest game mechanic in this ever so shallow game, that is.

    No.

In fact, there are less types of ships that are unable to equip dual cannons than there are that can.

I said Escorts require "little Skill" not none at all and I didn't "Suck" in the Wells it is a great Science ship and the Use of abilities meant I could Incapacitate ships quite efficiently but that is still not much compared to a DPS of 30,000 after all the Objective is to "Destroy" the Enemy Ships not Incapacitate them.

I'm going to say this as nicely as I can... Your ALL morons.

Cruisers out DPS anything in this game by FAR if they are set up properly. Escorts don't have a prayer against a high resist beam boat tank in PVP. Trust me I've tried all different things with my fleet mates and cruiser tanks ALWAYS beat escorts.

This is of course assuming that the cruiser is setup using its full potential.... Elite Phasers lots of healing skills and at least a partial A2B build. I have a friend who developed a special high resist build with another expert PVP builder where she runs resist levels so high it is virtually invincible... I pounded at it for 5 MIN strait using Fleet Disruptor Dual Heavy Cannons and tac consoles on a pure damage tactical character and she never even fell below 90%.

Then she insta vaped me in 10 seconds flat with her elite phasers... So the fact of the matter is very simple. The obviously few people who know what their doing can build a cruiser that can not only out DPS an escort but can tank damage from 3-4 ships at once! And im talking PVP ships not NPC'S.

By the way when she killed me I was flying a chel grett with a couple fleet neutroniums so it wasn't pilot error.

I must be doing something wrong....
...as I have no skills, and I fly a DHC equipped escort due to its simplicity in PVE.

Point ship at target, engage Boff skills to suit, press fire. Return for second pass if required.

Excepting the Sphere missions, there's not a lot in PVE that the above tactic won't make mincemeat of even if you aren't running elite fleet gear and consoles.

And IMO missions in the Sphere have been specifically designed to work against Cannon Escorts, but that's another story.

Hard to take you seriously when you use the wrong term. DPS is measure of damage in a given time frame. Cruisers are good at sustained damage of a long period of time. Basically against an escort that stays in a fight if you are good and using a FAW la la build you get the escort because they do not have the heals to keep up with sustained damage. If the escort pilot is good he will alpha maybe stick around and when it gets hot jet out and repeat eventually he will get "lucky" with his alpha of course this is in PvP.
