its been just over an hour and the server is still down. seriously, almost every time cryptic does a big update, they mess something up and the server ends up being down for most of the day. i think its time they invested in better coders and script writers or better yet... have a seperate server that runs just like the holodeck and TEST THE UPDATE MORE before adding to the holodeck server!!!
wait, everytime they even add new stuff at all, they break something else and have to fix that. they fix 1 thing and end up breaking 10 different things
sad but true
I'm going to be generous and say "things don't always scale the way you think they should (see. just about everything in every part of the universe)" but even still cryptic should put a lot more effort into testing networks.
Think of this way (if the massive wall of hate from this thread isn't enough to drive the point across), how much time do you guys spend promoting these botched event/season releases? Now you know what happens to a lot of that when the servers don't work?
*Flush*
The return you get (once you factor in "previous frustration" into the excitement of actually getting the release) might not be much greater than smaller scale releases that launch smoothly. All that extra work, perhaps for nothing because of these network issues. Do more to fix them.

okay, to sum it up at first i was like mehh.. downtime exactely when im at work.. now that im back from work and normall the game should be back for at least 3 hours... i.... well i am speechless is it still down? or again? was it up? what have i missed?
Actually no it hasn't. He posted at 3:24pm PST that it'd be 60 minutes. So they still have around 20 minutes
And once again, it doesn't matter how much testing is done. Nothing can predict server loads when thousands hit at the same time.
Ask, I'm not an expert in anything to do with computers either hardware or software, so forgive me if this is a dumb question. Is there anyway to possibly simulate the kind of load the servers would be under at all during the testing phase?
Y'all are kinda sad. I've been here since Beta, been a Lifer since Launch. Cryptic's record for server stability is actually pretty impressive. And I haven't seen any company not have issues on major content launch days. Sometimes, you've got to be the one who sits out that first 24 hours and put your grown up pants on.

i realized this after i posted my post and started making supper.. forgot the fact that im an hour ahead of the server.. hopefully it will be back up by the time i am all done with supper.. good luck to you Cryptic
Nonsense. Complete and utter nonsense. Here's why -
It is exactly because we live in a world where the unforeseen happens a company whose sole commodity is exchanged over the internet should show a bit more respect to their clients with regards to the up time of servers and infrastructure.
Yes, Voth happens but that does not excuse an incompetent infrastructure or a lazy IT team. A system such as an MMO should have backup servers that is updated in real time. They should have double the amount of bandwidth that they suspect they might need. They should have multiple lines and IPs so that if one back-end fall another can quickly be brought online.
So no sir, Voth happens is an excuse for children. They run a business, they should make it as pleasant for the customers as possible and within reason.
I understand what you're trying to say, but there is one major flaw in your argument. You are not dealing with customer service here. You're dealing with technicians. For that matter, you're dealing with techs who are, at this very moment, busily attempting to repair the servers and code so that you can play the game. Moreover, they are having to do this with a relatively limited budget and set of resources. In a lot of ways, we are lucky to hear anything from Brandon or other people involved in attempting to restore service. Try getting that level of attention if your electricity goes out.
Sure, we can all say that Cryptic needs backup servers, more bandwidth, multiple IPs, etc. I tend to think that everyone, including the technicians having to do the thankless job of restoring this game, would agree that they need the best, most reliable equipment they can get their hands on. But it's really not up to them, is it? It's up to the bean counters.
If you want to make your opinion heard about how Cryptic's business is run, you should go to the website for the company and send an email to its upper management, instead of venting your spleen to the techs and volunteers at the bottom of the totem pole.

probably various loads, but ideally 100% capacity load to make sure it performs as expected. then again it may actually have nothing to do with that and possibly something like a tripped wire, and getting a new one takes hours of red tape and an engineer from the local reputable service to replace for all i know.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
If only there was a non-interactive alternative to Star Trek Online that could be watched in the background while waiting for that server light to turn green. Maybe there could even be multiple editions, or series, to appeal to your individual tastes and touch on various aspects points of interest in this game.
Bah but for all that it would require a madman with a time machine traveling back to 1966 to make that happen....
...I'll be right back.

Uhm, I hate to break a bubble, but you're not considering the fact that it *is* a business.
Backup servers? Extra Bandwidth? Extra ISP connections? That's overhead. Hardly-ever-needed overhead. The standard business response to unneeded overhead is to cut it.
That would include IT salaries since they aren't production, they're support.
There is a balance between support costs and support levels, and PWE/Cryptic has decided on that balance. It might not make the players happy all the time, but the business has to have a cost structure that makes sense while not alienating too many customers.
Now, that said, there is a problem here. And that's the rollout validation and testing, which couldn't have been done well since we sit here with servers down. This is Season 8.5 so rollouts should be a solved problem. Why that's not the case, I don't know enough to even guess. But it is mildly irritating.
On that note, if Cryptic is promoting new content over fixes, I can't really complain too much because I like new content.
What I don't understand is, season 8 launch was fine. Where are all these new people coming from for a measily half-holiday like 8.5? Especially one with so much controversy around the new grind and whatnot? Did they do some extra advertising this year or something?

Why? It will be completely fine after two weeks of crashes.
RnD and upgrade needs less RNG. Less lottery. Something has to change.
