That's because it doesn't use by default the program files folder. Anything altering the program files directory requires administrator access.
So if u setup a password protected admin permissions, before u downloaded arc, they wouldnt get past shared permissions (guest), and u would still be the sole admin of your pc?? If thats possible, that would mean they could only access what u wanted them to see right?

I just found your claim that 99% of software requires administrator access to run odd. If Arc requires adminstrator access because it needs to patch itself, then there are two solutions:
1. Give us the option to install Arc somewhere else besides "Program Files".
2. Only ask for administrator access when Arc needs to patch and not when we are just trying to run the game.

In order to function like it describes, wouldnt it have to have the same permissions as my security program...i run skype, and a few apps for buying, video, photo grabs and chat, even watch youtube. between missions. Its why ive been so dead set against it! If i decide to buy something online and it has permission to look for Pw's and activities of 3rd party programs, it may compromise my accounts from ebay, palpal, amazon, etc.

You do realize that windows, while pretty secure, can still be TRIBBLE anyways with or without any help? :P
ARC doesn't sit there go digging through your computer , log EVERYTHING then ship it all to PWE here in cali. All it does is look to see if you got any of it's KNOWN games in your registry, and if so loads it into it. On load up of a game, yes it launches anti hack software that runs and makes sure you're not trying to inject/bot what not, but it's not sitting there saying "Oh look they logged into paypal lets grab their info!"
Security analysts would have seen that already and slammed PWE with massive fines. As for what admin access does, it COULD do some damage if it was a malicious program, so could skype which is built into windows 8 pretty heavily, so could IE, so could a dozen or so microsoft apps. ARC is no better or worse than a lot out there. Now all that said, do I personally think it needs it? No because I install it outside of the program files so I don't think it should be required. But again, it's the least of my worries :P

Neither Skype nor IE requires administrator access to run. If I recall correctly, Skype might require administrator access to update itself, but not for normal operations. Even if PWE does not have malicious intentions, it is not a good idea to give a program administrator access when it is not needed. Arc includes a web browser. (It might be using IE; I'm not sure.) How do we know Arc won't get compromised by a malicious script in the future? When that happens, do you really want Arc to be running with administrator permissions?
The only reason I can think of why Arc would need administrator access is that it needs to patch itself. But if we install it in a directory where normal users have write permission, then it shouldn't need administrator access. This is the way the current STO launcher works.

This is something I really like about ARC to be honest, in the past many multi-launchers run with no knowledge of whether the game you use them for is already installed by other means, which means you end up with multiple installations. When you run ARC it checks the registry and if it finds a game already installed it just changes its internal links to the existing installation and runs from there, great time and space saver in my opinion.
As to the website, it's been quite some time and it doesn't seem to be fully integrated with the rest of the web services to me.
For example if I want to view my wallet I have to find the link to it, and when I say find I mean search for it, there doesn't seem to be a clear indicator anywhere to go to the wallet.
The easiest way I have found so far is to click the charge button and go to the charge page, then from there click on the purchase history and again scroll down to the bottom of the page to a list of plain text links that aren't very obvious and click the one that says "Already have ZEN? Go to My Wallet".
Things like this are an important part of account management and they need to be clearer and easier to access.
That and the fact that some aspects of the wallet are on the old site and some are on the new site and you get that annoying 10 second count down pop up to go to the new site makes it very cumbersome to navigate.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
I don't trust Arc .
Not because it's a Chinese company .
Not because it's PWE .
But because it's related to the company that says "no bathingsuits outside of Risa !" -- and then everyone wears bathingsuits outside of Risa ... -- with that being the latest example out of many that share the same theme : the lack of credibility & competence .
So when they say "Arc is perfectly safe !" -- then't when I check if my anti-virus is up to date .
Okay uh no it doesn't. It scans your drive looking for games you installed already which even steam does that, so does origin, and it does NOT report it back to PWE.
Don't care that it's not sending reports back to "them" or not. It doesn't need to scan my drive for any reason at all.
It installs plugins, like steam does, and steam also tries to keep it in place. You can easily remove them by disabling the plugin (as I've done before)
Disable the plugin after it's installed or a function that disables the ability to install plugins?
It does not hijack other software programs lol. I have tons of software in ARC that I can run with or without it.
So then why is it pulling programs into the Arc launcher? Or are these only "their" games that are in the launcher that you speak of?
It uses the same amount of resources that steam does
I know I need a newer computer eventually. But I don't need what little resources I have on this one being bogged down anymore than I need. So making this mandatory is just a giant middle finger of "We don't care what you think or want, obey or be gone"
Administrator access that's true, but if that's a huge red flag then 99% of apps in the world are huge red flags now a days.
Let us calm down with the incorrect, false fear posts kthx.
Can you clear some of this up please?
Sorry if it some of what I say comes off as rough, but I don't like being bullied into compliance.

So, let me get this straight:
You don't trust Arc because of a bug connected to a game that is only connected to this program due to it being a launcher?
The more I work with ARC the more frustrating its getting.
1) Last 2 patches of STO on my computer that has ARC, it causes the launcher to fail and takes several attempts to log in.
2)
But the WORST EXPERIENCE I am having with ARC is this new stupid website! I'm trying to respond to a CSR Ticket, AND IT WON'T LET ME! And it WILL NOT let me file a new ticket to respond!!! I bet they are doing this because they don't want anyone to file CSR tickets, so they can rip people off, like they are doing with a purchase I just made.

I wonder if there done something to people trying to download the game on Steam. Tried to dowmload it on Steam yesterday but some error was found when trying to launch the game. I have temporarilly installed Arc against my better judgement but i can guarantee with having to do this and no further option as soon as another game captures my interest STO will be at the top of my uninstall list

If you are opted into the Steam Beta client, try opting out. I had issues with launching the game via Steam the other day and spent hours trying to find out what was causing it, turned out it was a bug with the lastest beta patch and when I opted out and restarted Steam it worked again.
Join date is wrong, I've actually been around since STO Beta.

Well as of today I can't play STO through Steam or ARC either for some reason. Every time I press 'engage' it crashes to desktop. Worked fine yesterday and I haven't changed any drivers since then.
Edit: After fifteen or so failed attempts, it randomly worked and let me in via Steam...

Haha, I tried once with ARC. When it showed the same error, I focused all my efforts on Steam. It's always going to be my preferred game management client. Still not really sure what caused the problem though, it just stopped doing it randomly after lots of failed attempts. Fingers crossed it doesn't do it again.

Okay it's probably a foregone conclusion that tiles are here to stay, even though a lot of us hate them.. So any feedback we give will probably have to fit within that since the STO site design has to be mirrored for all of PWE's games. (Well the layout at least.) Here is my constructive advice.
So with those criteria in mind here is something I have been doing. It took less than 1 work day and it would be trivially easy for the web guys to emulate (I ENCOURAGE IT!) for not just the STO site, but for all PWE Arc sites.
*Removed rotating banner
*Removed persistent videos
*Changed background
*Tweaked a few CSS properties (mostly transparency, color, border strokes)
This will reduce my blood pressure and make the site more usable for me personally, but why stop there?
The following is what I believe an even better (from a visual, branding, and smooth UX experience stance) layout would be like, again with changes that would be incredibly easy for the web guys to implement in a few hours or less. I could do all of this in my browser with a Greasemonkey script if I were any good at javascript, but I'm not, so these images were made by building on top of my CSS changes above and adding to them by editing the page HTML with Firebug. (To be clear, the only photoshop in the next 6 images is the server status and search box.)
There's a bit of a negative space issue when doing it as 1 or 2 columns but with some image rescaling and using larger snippets from the full articles (at Cryptic's discretion) they could solve that fairly easily. /edit -edit#2-
Okay I did it. I dove in and took a shot at a Greasemonkey script. My amateur code is really pooptacular but I got everything as seen in my concept images except for the Server Status indicator and the search box.
No photoshop trickery involved. Just the Stylish theme I wrote before, combined with a new Greasemonkey script. /edit#2
*Duplicating the nav bar to the Product page reduces user confusion and reduces a degree of navigation digging that they have to do to find links.
*Moving the Product Page button link over to the left of the nav bar unifies it with the rest of the visual style and places it in closer proximity to the rest of the controls.
*Search is search. Search is good. Search is friend. We likey search.
*Duplicating the div box that contains the Product List from the Product page to all of the other pages does 2 things:
***1. It ensures that when you change from the Product page to any of the other pages, the navigation bar buttons and the beginning of content stay in the exact same x,y location (no visual popping, no confusion)
***2. It's a handy dandy place for a game logo and banner! Lots of people were complaining that "Star Trek Online" was a puny line of text on the other pages which was A) Demeaning to the brand, and Potentially confusing to brand new users that might think the page was for 'some game called Arc'
*Transparencies in CSS optional but sexy and help to combat the complaints about the site being a homogenized dull slab of gray.
*Backgrounds! You have giant wallpaper art Cryptic/PWE, use it!
*Server status. I don't need to explain this one.
*Banner list and persistent video block: To be frank, I didn't complain about the rotating banners on the previous STO site because they didn't eat up such a large chunk of my screen and they were visually distinct in their own frame/window. In this Arc site they are both large and their div/cell containers are basically the same bland style as all of the other news boxes which makes it more difficult to distinguish what the latest news is because they all blend together. Their functions are also duplicated on other pages. They irk me. I removed them.
I believe that these changes would be well received for all PWE/Arc sub-sites (just swap out the content for game-specific content).

Yeah neither do I.
they did enough to get their quota of people to sign up and download the client (facepaw), now the next step is to reform all of the in game stuff...the unpleasant surprises i warned about before....the tribblenaughts aren't laughing my way now i bet! Enjoy ARC...u asked for it XD

I wonder if the old STO torrent swarm is still alive or if everyone stopped seeding it. (Cryptic officially released the STO client on torrent format back in 2010.)
Of course even if you could get your hands on it who knows if the old launcher executable would ping the right server for updates or if they changed IPs over the years.
