Sorry, but that statement isn't quite right. If I understand correctly we will always be able to play STO with Steam, even in the future.
Thats not even cut and dry right now. You can play with some steam features enabled but your launching the game with the Cryptic launcher not Steam. That means in the future we could still play STO with those Steam features but with an ARC launcher and then technically the game is still on Steam as much as it is now.
The question is what would said ARC launcher be like. Will it close after the game has launched so Steam can do its thing exclusively? If a striped down ARC launcher is made for steam will it be made available for everyone? Will it just load the future version of the entire ARC platform with an integrated launcher? Then my hope - Will we just continue to use the Cryptic launcher permanently and PWE just hasn't told us that? Frankly if it is the last option that should be announced because all this strife with old players who don't want to use ARC goes away if that truly is the case.
I love this outlook. It's the outlook of a person who is more than determined to prove that the way a certain thing is set up means automatic failure.
And it's a perfect counterpoint to *ahem* "certain people" who are just as determined to prove that ARC is the best thing since sliced bread, and bound to overshadow even the Second Coming of you-know-who. They're easy to spot- one of them has gone so far as to attribute the "Galaxy reboot" to ARC. I expect to see one of them announce that ARC has cured cancer any day now.
All the feedback I've gotten from this thread has been sent off and discussed with the rest of the team, and I've even came back letting you guys know that some of the things will be implemented later and some are still being worked on. (Screenshots, the issue with game installs not properly loading up on Arc, etc)
As for forced Arc, I've already stated as well that the option to use Steam will still exist if the game is already on Steam. That means for STO, you can launch it from Steam without having to open Arc.
I'm not sure if I'm just not being clear enough and if so I'll work on that, but we are listening and we do have a lot of future plans for Arc; A lot of which has come directly from all of your feedback.
You are being perfectly clear, just understand that some forum goers in the STO community are very set in their ways and any change that they can't 100% opt out of is a bad change. These people will never ever be happy and will continue to cry doom and gloom, and claim feedback isn't being taken into account, because they don't understand that feedback and commands are not the same thing.
Should I buy Zen (unlikely at the moment) I would like to know HOW MUCH I AM BUYING!
Could you please add the amount of zen to the portal.
If you select your payment method and then click on a value, it tells you on the right what that value will give you in Zen plus any bonus etc.
My only real issue with the new Zen purchase site is that it doesn't just add the funds to your wallet, it forces you to tell it what server to put all of your purchase onto before you actually buy it, which is TRIBBLE.
Join date is wrong, I've actually been around since STO Beta.
True alters don't have a "main". Account wide unlocks for all unique event rewards!!

Nifty. Still prefer the older way of seeing both at the same time (and not clicking on one price or the other to see how much).
I think the problem is that we've been told that the Cryptic launcher is eventually going away. If that happens many of us can't think of any other way steam would launch STO besides some form of ARC. The official info we have seems to be contradicting itself. If there are no longer any plans to ever remove the Cryptic launcher let us know so we can put this to rest once and for all. If there are still plans to eventually remove the Cryptic launcher than your gonna have to let us know how we can continue to use Steam without arc in the future without a Cryptic launcher or this question will continue to be asked.
Legitimate concern. I will see what I can find out and post back with any details I get.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
I've cleared my cache, cookies, and reset IE as I know chrome uses some of IE's settings..
no idea what else to do here.

Well, I've stated my view on ARC a fair number of times. But just so it's clear to your superiors:
I personally don't see a problem with a single, publisher-wide, Updater/Launcher program. I can see that making back-end support easier.
I have a issue with a secondary program that is required to run along side the game (and in this case the only PWE game I will ever play) I want to play. I have extreme issues that said program is incorporating functions of other programs I already have running, so I don't see the need to duplicate it.
If ARC can incorporate a function to shut itself down after it update/launch my game of choice, then I will eagerly try it. Otherwise, I will likely stop playing STO after ARC becomes mandatory. At this time, Steam doesn't play well with my current Rig and building a new one is financially out of the question at this time.
Simply put.
Thank you for the time...

Some with me, these unified launchers are becoming the industry standard now, even Blizzard is testing a single launcher for all its' games.
I also have no problem with them scanning my active processes on start up as an anti cheat/hack system, this is something I am used to with Warden in WoW, it's been a while since I played LoTRO but I think even Turbine did this.
Scanning my hardware and sending that info in so that they have the stats on what systems their games are being played on is again something I have no problem with, I am used to it with Blizzard and even Turbine did this when I played LotRO. It would allow them to make the games play on the widest variety of machines.
What I have a problem with is the browser and chat facilities. To me they are gimmicks.
If I want to chat with my friends then I will either pick up the phone and call them. I would even, believe it or not, go out and call at their home.
The browser causes me concern security wise. What is it based one? Will there be a way to turn of scripts? Like I can in firefox with plug ins where I am running noscript, ABP and ghostery.
If there was a stripped down launcher with out these gimmicks as an option for those of us who don't want them then I would try it out with out giving it a second thought. As it is I am unwilling to go near it. I would be happy to use this stripped down version even if doing so meant I was not eligable for any ARC exclusive promos when they are active.

So let me get this straight...
First, you guys say there are no plans to make Arc mandatory, yet a couple of months later, you say it'll become mandatory.
Then, you say we'll be able to choose between Steam and Arc, yet now, you're saying you have no idea and that Arc may become mandatory even if we use Steam?
What he's saying is that while Steam will still be usable, he doesn't know yet how it works backstage, which is what someone wanted to know.
And Cryptic/PWE never said Arc would never be mandatory - quite the opposite, in fact. They've often said it's not mandatory yet, which is still true, but it was plain from the beginning that they wanted us all to have to use Arc. That's why the Steam users kicked up such a fuss when the initial plans called for doing away with that as well.
Please get some straight, official answers in this thread. I've been following it closely since page 1 and frankly it's degenerating more and more. All we (the posters) do now in here is confusing eachother and ranting.

If PWE had any interest in straight answers, they would've had a few ready when the beta first launched. It's months later now and NADA. They're not interested in telling you what's in the koolaid, they just want you to shut up and drink it.
Since you are or will shortly be forcing us to use your ARC software or Steam in order to access your games, I would like to know more about ARC itself.
I only play Star Trek Online and have absolutely no interest in any other Perfect World Entertainment (hereinafter "PWE") game. Given that the only change in my game play since I started playing over four years ago is that I will be forced to use your new, unwanted, ARC software or Steam, I am curious as to how ARC makes things better for me.
I would appreciate it if you would explain to me in detail how the ARC browser and launcher will truly benefit me in a way that is substantially different than how I already use and play Star Trek Online - bearing in mind that I do not play any other PWE or Cryptic Studios game.
Beyond that, I am curious as to my privacy and what you're doing with the information ARC collects.
Exactly, and I mean exactly please, what data are you collecting through the browser and launcher?
Is ARC collecting data on other software that is installed on our computers?
Is ARC collecting data on the operating system we use?
Is ARC setting cookies on our computers?
Is ARC installing anything at all - including updates to itself - on our computers?
If ARC is installing anything at all on our computers, what is it installing, why is it installing it, and what does it do?
Is ARC collecting and providing data collected from our computers - of any kind - to third parties that results in monetary profit to any person or entity?
Is ARC collecting and providing data collected from our computers - of any kind - to third parties without monetary profit that results in benefit financial or otherwise to any person or entity?
Are we able to opt out of any and all data collection that may take place through the ARC browser or launcher?
Is PWE, its subsidiaries, affiliates, successors and/or assigns now or in the future able to earn financial profit from anything that the ARC browser and/or launcher collects?
Will the Steam launcher be providing any data to PWE or Cryptic Studios or any other third party that PWE, Cryptic Studios or any other individual or entiity will benefit from financially?
Given the information available in your Terms of Service and other documentation, use of PWE games subjects your customers to an automatic agreement to your terms and conditions. I started playing Star Trek Online in Beta, when the publisher was Atari. At that time, there was no ARC browser or launcher, and I have made purchases of items in-game for money over the years, prior to PWE's acquisition of Cryptic Studios and its assorted titles.
You are now changing the agreements I made at that time and up to this point by requiring use of your ARC software.
As such, since we are being given the option of using your unwanted ARC browser and launcher in order to play the game in which we have paid for in-game items, are you prepared to reimburse us for those purchases in the event that we decide not to subject ourselves to ARC if it turns out to be data mining for your profit?
Thank you for your prompt attention and detailed response to these questions.
This should be merged with the Arcgames.com feedback thread. Arc is a really good thing and in my opinion, it does not collect any more data then any other program.

Do you work for PWE or Cryptic? I'm interested in their response.
Or do you have first-hand knowledge of the coding of the software that allows you to state unequivocally that ARC doesn't collect any data?
No, it should not be merged with the other thread just so it can get lost amongst the crowd. These questions need a response that people will be able to see.
More specifically, I asked if ARC collects any data that PWE or Cryptic benefit from financially. I did not ask whether or not it collected any more data than any other program.
Thanks for your response. I'm glad you like ARC. I don't, and I have questions about it that I'd appreciate an official response on.
I can appreciate your opinion, but I'm not looking for player opinion.
I'm looking for an official answer from someone officially authorized to speak for PWE and Cryptic.
And at this time I say absolutely, categorically, utterly NO to ARC.
That's subject to debate. He insists he doesn't, but his over-the-top manic level of unconcealed ARC-worship strongly suggests "hired shill" as a possibility.
You are not getting a response from a dev, as they do not care about what customers think, so i would get that out of your mind now. . Also, IF it does datamine stuff, it does it as much as steam and google does. As for the "reimbursement", they would laugh in your face if you ever even THOUGHT of asking.
Since you are or will shortly be forcing us to use your ARC software or Steam in order to access your games, I would like to know more about ARC itself.

I big chunk of the questions you are asking are answered in the ARC FAQ on the website.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
Possibly (and likely) not truthfully though, not that i matters.
Have you read the ARC FAQ? It addresses what data is being collected:
What anonymous data is collected from the built-in browser?
If a player opts-in to submit performance data, then we'll be gathering information on how fast pages load, etc., though this is only to track performance and only if you as a user wish to partake in the program. Currently, these data aren't saved in a human-readable form, but if this is a feature players want to see, we can definitely look into implementing that in the future.
In regard to browser security, we have tested the browser extensively to ensure that it is safe and secure. We take security extremely seriously, so even though we've done as much internal testing as we can, we will still be monitoring for user reports very closely in case anything is discovered that needs quick resolution.
In regard to collecting data, we understand that not all players are interested in submitting anonymous performance data from their machines, and that's totally OK. There is no requirement to opt-in to this feature in any way, and nothing is "gated" for users who do not elect to participate.
It covers many other subjects as well.
