I'm experiencing significantly higher cycles, and consequently heat and battery usage as long as arc is on. I've had to turn the graphics down for Crystalline Entity ever since this "update".
There's just no two ways about it: With arc even minimized to background tray, my laptop's fan is running permanently (the system runs cool enough when not playing games for this not to occur in a 20C room). The new Arc beta takes my battery life when not plugged into a wall from 5 hours to barely 2.
Exit Arc, and the thing cools down in seconds.
Sometimes change is good. This is nowhere near those times.
I just saw a report on Fox News that the California State Legislature just passed a Resolution that says that internet companies have to disclose all functions of their programs.
So, I hope we can get full disclosure about ARC and it's questionable functions like the Hard Drive scanning, the possible spyware issue, as well as why it takes up so much memory.
as cool as arc is with its easy to navigate menus and information at hand without searching throu sto website i for 1 can not use,it is WAY too heavy to run when i running STO
simply by just running arc it causes sto to stall, rubber band and most other connection issues you get from server hopping across the Atlantic
my connection to sto on last hop is 183 ms
this is make or brake for me as if i run anything internet connection based while using sto
i get continually timed out
i run the same test with arc running and last connection was 352 ms on last hop
sorry to say the live update the arc gets simply kills my connection
there are many factors with the connection from UK to cryptic that neither me or cryptic can sort without them putting a sister server in the UK
and before i get smart Alec remarks saying change you provider, the servers that i get diverted too in order to connect to cryptic would be the same servers regardless of which provider i use
if it was not for the fact that i rebooted my comp few months back i would never have downloaded arc my advice is if you experience server timeout and constant rubber-banding load game client bypassing arc
FYI if you do this when the game gets patched you will have too use arc for the patch to successfully install
bring back the old launcher
Wild belief that its a tool of the Chinese Government to spy on random peoples computers seems to be the main reason.
That and its just not necessary - I'll wager the vast majority of people will only use the launcher portion of it, so why bother replacing the current launcher?
Its more an issue of we don't like having to run any extra programs on our system than are necessary. Arc is fine if its not necessary, the problem is that it is necessary which makes it
insidious. Just because other companies do it doesn't mean we have to like it. I think if that one element of it were changed a lot more people would be happy with it.
It's designed to run in the background (although apparently this will not be necessary, making the concept even worse), using resources that some people may need.
It's a platform designed to expose the user to PWE's other games, in the hopes of luring them into those, and grab money from them, and judging from the amount of people who are easily lured by the grab-bags they will be making big money from this.
It replaces a perfectly functional launcher.
There is some concern that code may be hidden to detect... whatever... Since it is not OpenSource, we have no way of confirming or denying it at this point, and it is not unreasonable to assume that they would do this.
And these are just the points I could create just now... There are more.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Any superfluous piece of sofware isn't welcome on my laptop. Definitely if it is meant to keep running in the background.
And it doesn't bring anything positive for me (I currently have all the connectivity I need in my browser), hence the choice is simple: I'm against being imposed Arc as a necessary tool to launch STO.

This, basically. I don't need any adware-launcher-web 2.0 thingy to slow down my system and mine for data, especially since I don't give two squeals about PWE and their asia grinders.

Its a pre launcher you have to have arc running before you can start the launcher but only by clicking the shortcut through arc...any other way and you end up with the launcher stuck on "patching" its to do away with Botting....which DOES happen despite what people say...If you pvp against certain fleets you will know this. because of this we all get a pre launcher launcher shoved down our necks. the rest of it is to showcase the other games.
that is why we have arc...and it slows down the game on this old pc, I had to turn down my graphics because of it. On new hardware you guys shouldn't have an issue.
I just went add non steam game and uninstalled Arc. It was due for a launcher patch so it's just doing 20mb at the moment looks fine. I stupidly went looking for the STO files under Cryptic without realising it's in the PWE folder.
I've been wondering, I've seen a couple threads and signatures in regards to this and don't know why?
It is a tool designed by the NSA the NWO and the Chinese Intelligence Agency (hint hint, check initials) to keep tab on us so in the future they can give us the Mark of the Beast, they also track what we do, when we sleep, what do we eat, at what time we take showers, when we go to the bathroom, what temperature is in our home, etc etc.
So no thank you, now back to wear my tin foil hat I don't want the satellites to X-ray my brain. :D
A Chinese company is trying to have me install mandatory software that has been used as spyware, by other, more trustworthy companies in the past, both openly and hidden, and which serves absolutely no purpose for me other than to deliver advertising and slow down my system. No thanks.
well i pre-ordered sto when it first came out. an i have played other pwe games an there TRIBBLE. an i will not use arc. if need be , i'll use steam but for now i'll use my og laucher . arc will never see my pc. :P:P:P:P

Do not force me to download more TRIBBLE to make this game launch.
Sums it up for me.

Same for me. I don't hate it, I just don't need it.

Don't make ARC mandatory! Keep it optional only!

Uninstall Steam... problem solved... A problem you most likely won't be able to solve with Arc...
Oh and btw: Originally steam also only served as a launching platform... Over time however...

It's fairly simple actually.

Now another question are the remastered Fed missions on tribble??
i would run a virus scan for baby ARC's :P

Coincidentally I've just done this exact same thing.
If I'm going to have to use a launcher I'd rather use one I know and that has a selection of games from wider afield than one company.
I find it amusing how they have inadvertently pushed people towards Steam
