I've had this issue off and on. It usually seems to happen after a particularly fast loading screen or after a series of rapid loading screens (like transwarp to fleet base, dock, take transporter pad to embassy, take embassy turbolift to a different floor, rapid fire map changes) or if I've been playing all day (not a heat issue but probably a memory issue). Thankfully it's usually small and usually fixed with a map load.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
I literally can't go do anything Dyson related because my game crashes every 10 minutes, even with every graphical setting set to the lowest possible.
They are the crashes I always got at some point whenever I had to do things on New Romulus. It got old to the point of me not going there anymore. Shame as I liked the background music!
Then Season 8 introduced the "Dude...wheres my textures?" bug which Cryptic cant replicate (Still??????) and finally 8.5 has reintroduced me to the D3D driver crashes again.
In fact it happened to me the other day in the battlezone just as the Dino bosses spawned, and of course when I restarted the client I was put in a different instance and no Dino's to vanquish and the region was in the reset timer
Again, I respectfully request if we can get an update on this. Just a word, a morsel as it were, a crumb of hope that you (Cryptic) are looking into this .
The affected hardware lists, (PC, Mixed & Mac) have been reorganised by generation/series.
Anyone who has still not posted theirs and sees it missing is encouraged to do so. Just add to this thread. Preferably using the graphics-focused minimum (as seen in the lists - GPU+CPU+O/S) plus whatever details you see fit to include. The former subset I'll incorporate into the next update to the list pages.

You can add mine to the list, this problem has persisted through two full format+reinstall of the entire system.
GT 630 + Athlon II X2 255 + Windows XP Professonal (32 bit) SP3.
My Romulan Liberated Borg character made it to Level 30 and beat the (old) Defense of New Romulus with the skill point bug.
I've tried the proposed fix posted above, sorry guys it doesn't work, we are still at restarting the client as the only reliable way of temporally curing the problem.:(
Except it seems to be getting worse. I've just shut down the game third time in a row and I'm done. I had this issue appearing after no more than 5 mins. of gametime regardless the 3 times I exited the game. How can any company in the free market behave like Cryptic does with this issue is simply beyond me.
Interesting part I noticed - it seems to hit certain chars I have way more than the others. On some of them I can go up to more than an hour without this appearing and on the other hand, on my KDF main it's almost certain to pop up asap.
Interestingly, upon questioning my brother, I find that his system, which is 64-bit too my 32 and has a couple GB more RAM than I do (and a graphics card a couple generations newer), has never had this issue.
As much as I'd love to solve the issue myself by upgrading my computer, I can't afford to. And besides which, Cryptic, I've never had an issue paying at max settings. There's obviously something wrong here, and as a lifetime subscriber, someone who's defended you for a while and bought probably more stuff from the C-Store than I really probably should have, I'm begging you: fix this. Or at the very least acknowledge that it needs to be fixed. Because so far all we've gotten is a post that, intentionally or not, felt like it was coming from Baghdad Bob and a vast, ringing silence. And it's becoming harder and harder to justify to myself spending more money on a game that, for all I love it, is impossible to play for less than an hour at a time.
I'm afraid upgrading your rig might not cure it either. I built a new rig, 6 core processor, 64 Win 8.1 and it still happens. It just takes longer to manifest itself, however I've begun to see the symptoms much earlier over the last few days (White backgrounds to NPC windows) White squares instead of set powers, etc)
I've lost count of the number of times myself and others have literally begged for some kind of acknowledgment on the problem, in this and other threads. I feel the silence is now just plain rude and uncaring
I've also been having this issue since season 8. I have found a solution that works for me maybe 60% of the time. The graphics slider for me is about three quarters of the way to max and I find that if I move it all the way to max and then back it fixes the problem at least for a while.
I also have no idea why they don't acknowledge and put this in patches's "known issues". And no way this affects just a small number of people, i mean... cmon, we're almost in 50 pages, and for what? 5 months with this annoying problem?
So it looks like on Tribble they redid the graphics options and added in a few new ones. I played for an hour last night, but wasn't changing maps much. Going to play around with tons of map changes later on today and will report if I see any changes to this nasty bug. Of course if any of you also want to test it out, it's all up on Tribble right now. We can only hope.
It's a lost, and a little bit annoying computer program puppy. It moved from outer space into cryptic servers, and now it's making us see white flashing screens ! Cryptic devs please make some more content for it to do, so it can leave us alone.:P
A few new threads in the graphics section about new people getting this problem and not knowing its a on going issue because logically they are looking in the graphics board not the PC network board, silly people.........
What a stupid idea it was to move this CROSS platform issue here.....
Ohh and the Thursday patch made no difference.

Indeed, it is extremely rude. I have yet to see or recall seeing any kind of aknowledgement on this issue. It's been 4-5 months now? What is being done to fix this very annoying problem? I have lots patience, but it is begining to run out.
Really trippy. If it wasn't a horrible game crippling bug that Cryptic won't do anything about, I might have had some fun in lego/minecraft academy. Alas, it is not meant to be so.
going into any tailor then exiting will temporally fix it, until going into a new map, the best it to completely shut down then come back on. you can also mess with your settings and that will help but in the end it will just go white.
ESO launches in two weeks. Thank god, at least ill be able to play a game I know I can see whenever I load into a map.
GG Cryptic, your inaction on this one bug weve been telling you about for 4 months is the cause of losing this spender.
Indeed, it is their ball-game to lose...I suspect many have chosen to look elsewhere for quality MMO gameplay, rather than wait out cryptic's undeterminable duration of utter darkness/blinding lights.
Thank god ESO comes out in two weeks. I am so done with this game, and this is the bug that drove me away. gg cryptic.
I sympathzie wholeheartedly, this glitch of blinding whiteness or pitch blackness is too much for many to tolerate, and it has been going on for some of us for over five months.
wonder what cryptic will do if many of these existing 'subs' do not return when season 9 rolls out?

Yep, me and a few guys I work with are getting it. I'll still play STO for my Star Trek fix and grind for a bit of Dil a couple hours at a time, but the vast majority of my time will go to ESO. Was in the beta and very impressed with it.

I don't remember when and I don't want to find the thread right now but I remember them posting a few times in at least one thread about this but they could never get it to repro on their test machines. (Edit: whoop, here's the main thread for this issue)
Related to that, I may have accidentally stumbled onto something that alleviates this problem although I haven't had the time to really push my game to see if I can get it to start whiting out again. Still, I've been able to play the over two hours necessary to run the mirror event on 7 characters without it ever happening for four days in a row, so I'd like to see if this clears up the problem for anyone else.
Defragment your hard drive (I used jkdefrag). It's the dumbest thing, but if it works it would explain why they could never get their test machines to white out. My theory would be that, as this problem is the worst in 32bit systems, this happens when the textures get loaded into virtual memory on a fragmented hard drive and the game loses track of where they are/can't load them quickly enough.
So a dumb thing I'd like someone else to try too, I defraged my HD the other day and I've been noticing that the whiteout is basically not happening for me, but it's possible that I've just been getting more stable results because my STO activity this week has been almost nothing but the mirror event.
Does our affected systems hardware summary include HD type at all? i.e. has anyone who's seeing this been playing STO off of/keep their virtual memory on an SSD?

Good thought, and if it works for you, great. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work for me, but then again, I have STO installed on a separate HDD from my OS and there may be a disconnect somewhere.

Perfectly understandable. Can't blame you for this. What's the point of playing a game, when you....can't play the game?
I don't think there's another even half-serious gaming company on Earth besides Cryptic that would leave a gamebreaking issue like this rampaging for months and pretending it's not happening in hopes it will go away by itself.
