I'm guessing it's CBS is taking the trek licence from cryptic
STO makes money, which makes CBS money. They have no reason to take the Trek license.
Plus, CBS can offer a new license any time they want - as they did to Keen Games for ST:IS. It's not CBS's or STO's fault if other companies can't get a Trek MMO running.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
I'm guessing it's CBS is taking the trek license from cryptic
That would only be 'epic' in your mind... apparently.
Epic in my mind would be a Fifth Season of Enterprise appearing on Netflix.

I will be the first to admit that I am an "on again-off again" player. However IF the announcement is truly EPIC, and IF we take into consideration some of the other underlying events that have taken place in recent months, then this is the logic behind what I think the announcement is.
1) There have been at least two hardware system updates that I know of.
2) Judging from some of the information I have gotten from some of my fleetmates that are long time (beta-stage) players there are obviously problems keeping the player base steady.
3)We all know that for a good while now Cryptic/PWE have not exactly been ignoring player requests for content but what players do request is either not within the abilities of the core game engine, not permissible by CBS, or not supported by a large enough contingent of the player base.
In conclusion I can only guess one thing that would be TRULY UNABASHEDLY EPIC!
With the various hardware and software updates I would guess that Cryptic/PWE are going to announce that over the course of 2014 they will be working the replace the core game engine with a newer version that would allow them to expand STO in ways not possible before.
Honestly, I have read many many posts about people wanting this or that. Posts demanding bug fixes etc. The one overriding issue I can see with doing at least some of these things comes from my experience in programming. Sometimes you can only fix a piece of programming by converting the whole smash to run on a different core software.
The core software you start out with never seems deficient when you first start using it but after a few years the faults begin to present themselves at alarming rates!
This would be the only announcement that I can think of that would be UNGODLY EPIC!
My guess would be Micheal Dorn doing VO with new Klingon Content, think a relaunch of the Klingon faction, Superhyped ala the Romulan faction, after all that worked for the romulans why couldn't it work for the Klingon Empire and its Vassal States.
Though , for the pessimists out there, that is a plausible hypothesis. It would be an important message, and it is also of epic proportions ...
I think the announcement is something related to STO.
Hopefully I'll come back from my break; this break is fun; I play intellectual games.
My Guess is that since Gecko said there was a new ship release tied to the upcoming Featured Episode.. the ship featured will be an Exeter so the "Epic" news is a VA Fleet Exeter to appease the droves of players who from day one have called for a T5 Connie.
except for the part in his interview where you missed him saying no to an Exeter or t5 connie.. lol...

while I don't think it is cbs pulling the plug (though I wish it was sometimes lol).. cbs makes no more, or no less money from the success of the game.. In all "likelihood" cryptic pays a flat fee for the rights to use said ip, I doubt they are on a contract where cbs shares in the profits.. (though with the fact that even after cryptic doubled their team size, they are still laughably the smallest studio out there. and with cryptics absolutely stunning inability to grasp how to do business, I could see them giving most of the money to cbs and pwe.. )..

Cryptic shuts down STO by december 1st.... but has signed a deal to develop Star Trek Online II in a 2.5 year timeframe with the prospect of unlocking a huge financial bonus for the company :P
A Star Trek/Jurassic Park crossover, that takes place in the Land of the Lost universe? Or maybe the Kaiju as a playable race?
Shut up ... shut up ... shut up!

That's called Season 8. Coming soon.
The Mechagodzilla is called V Rex (Virinatosaurus, the destroyer of Virinat colony ?), and it's the end boss of the Dyson sphere battlefield
