My Qs are many and dumb, but I'll try to keep'em short. So here goes:

    - is there a way to cease firing in space combat?

The way I do it involves deselecting the target so clicking anywhere in empty space.
    - if I equip two Undine set phaser turrets, only one of those will count for the set bonus purposes, right?

Yep they will only count as one.
    - one auxiliary cannon won't drain my auxiliary power at all, right?

Nope, it does drain it even tells you the amount. However power levels go back up quickly. It's why people are happy to run with three on the same ship.
    - can I mount said cannons on ships other than the Vesta? (the Scryer, for instance)

No.It tells you in the descripotion what ships they can be equipped on. In this case they are Vesta line exclusive.

    Can someone help me...

I got the T5U intrepid and I don't know how to get the voyager bridge on it. When I visited ESD just now it said it was using the Voyager 2077 (early one), but it was still the old big intrepid bridge. So then I swapped it off the voyager bridge to a normal one, was gonna swap it back but its not in the list anymore :(

How do I find it again??

did you buy either the 3.5k zen or 5k zen intrepid bundle or did you upgrade a pre-existing T5 Intrepid?

Starting is easy. Hit 'J' and Foundry Search page is under the panel "Foundry". Hit the more button to bring up the search page

Very new to the game and trying to figure out the different weapon systems. You have Polaron, Tetryon, Phaser, Plasma, Disurptor, Antiproton, etc - What kind of damage is best? Under the weapon info their is DPS and Damage ratings, whats the difference?

I see guys out their taking out Cubes in two passes with Disruptor Beams, uh how? I think it has something to do with up graded weapon systems, how do you do the up grades? The most popular answer to that one is "shoot them more then they shoot you."

I'll leave it at that for now but their are many more question that I have.

The only difference between different energy types is their proc, a 2.5% chance of something special happening. The exception is Antiproton, which simply has a bonus to Critical Severity instead.

There is thus no best kind of damage, although some procs are more useful than others. For example everything has hull, so the Disruptor proc (that reduces damage resistance) will always have an affect. Not everything has shields, so the Tetryon proc (that does extra damage to shields) will not always be useful.
    kang21804 wrote: »

Damage is how much each hit does.
Different types of weapons (Beam Arrays, Dual Beam Banks, Cannons, etc.) have different firing rates.
DPS is damage per second, a combination of the above two factors.
    kang21804 wrote: »

Primarily it's a good build that makes the difference.

Someone who uses Fire At Will 3 with Attack Pattern Omega 3 while buffed by Emergency Power to Weapons 3 at a full 125 Weapon Power through the whole firing cycle will do a ton of damage. Especially if they're also using Directed Energy Modulation and Attack Pattern Alpha as well.

Also note that damage drops off the further you are from your target, so you need to get up close.

So long as your gear is level appropriate, it won't make a huge difference.

The upgrade system requires you to use consumable upgrade kits on an item (which costs dilithium every application). Once the Tech Points meter is filled, you hit Upgrade and either wait for the timer to complete, or pay dilithium to speed through it (don't do that).

    thank you all

    The Klingon Empire, ofcourse! :D

On a more serious note, picking a faction can depend on several factors like:

    - Are there certain species you really like? (ex. Vulcan, Klingon, Bajoran, etc.)
    - Is there a certain aesthetic style you like?
    - Are there certain way of playing the game you prefer?

Some things you really need to know before picking a faction are:

Cryptic as a game developer favorizes the Federation faction heavily. Therefore, the Federation players have access to more types of ships and get more overall atention generally. The Federation faction also has more players than the other factions, so doing grouped content via queues is easier due to higher number of people willing to participate. The Federation also has more different species to choose from, but that one is not Crpytic's fault - that's due to lore. The content in the game is generally tailored to the Federation, although if you were a fan of the shows you may find out that the Federation here is not quite the same as that one.
Generally speaking, one could say that the Federation is the most well rounded faction in the game.

The Klingon (KDF) faction has smaller population numbers, but due to that is tightly knit bunch of people where a lot of the players know eachother and work well together. Also, a big portion of the population are veteran players and experienced PvPers who know a lot about game mechanics and are usually very helpfull. Due to smaller population it's generally more wellcoming, mature, has much less trolls and the atmosphere is generally more civil and cosy in zone chats on Klingon planets/starbases.
Due to the nature of the faction, Klingon players do have to socialize a lot more to get stuff done. Where you can just sign up for a queue on the Federation side, you might need to utilize tools such as the >KDF channels list< to get things going and it usually helps being social and reaching out for people.
The Klingon specific story levelling content is hands down the best content in the game and the quality and design of KDF starships is usually impecable., plus the way the game is developed - the Klingon faction is the most true to the lore and to Star Trek.

The Romulan faction is in a bit weird place because at level 10 you need to ally with one of the Federation on Klingon factions. If you played or know of WoW, think Pandaren - only here in the Romulan case you're not fully assimilated in the faction you're allied with like WoW's Pandas, you're still in a Romulan faction. However due to this, the Romulan faction lacks some facilities the other factions have, like Romulan fleets, starbases or the Academy.
On the other hand, the Romulan faction is the most OP faction in the game due to a lot of tactical heavy warbirds, the singularity warp cores on them and the Romulan and Reman space traits. You need to like the "cloak & dagger" style of play in order to utilize the Romulans to the full potential due to the nature of their ships which can all battlecloak. You also need to get used to having lower power levels than everyone else due to the singularity warp cores that have -20 power.
The Romulan faction has only 2 choices of species + alien. Romulans also have a unique leveling storyline that is of very high quality with some truly exceptional missions.

What is also important is that at end-game most of the queues and content are shared between the factions, so grouping is easier for everyone. Also you need to know that at end game the story content is also shared with a heavy Federation slant, while just some details are changed for the Klingon and Romulan factions to make it more apropriate from their point of view.
Have in mind that Cryptic will always make more stuff and give more attention to the Federation faction - it's their favourite child for years, although this doesn't mean that you won't have a great experience playing the other two factions. I mean, look at me - I'm playing mostly KDF and loving it! :D

If I was to dumb it down, this is what I'd say (in my personal opinion ofcourse):

    - Federation = most atetntion, most content, most choices, most development
    - Klingon = excellent ships, awesome aesthetics, good community, top-notch storylines, great characters on ground and for melee combat
    - Romulan = OP characters for space combat, awesome (though mostly tactical) ships, nice community, access to the best of their faction + the faction they're allied with (except ships)

Personally, I'd check the >STO Wiki< (if you haven't yet) and base my choice on the species that look coolest to me and I'd like playing and the ships that look the best for me, because once you hit level 50 the differences you get are mostly aesthetic and in the species' passives - so you're better off with something you'll like looking at and feel cool playing.

Correction: Star Trek as a franchise has always "heavily favorized" humans, hence the Federation, specifically as a vehicle to show our potential to advance and succeed in the future.

All of the ST series were about the adventures of Federation ships* and Federation crews. The relatively few aliens depicted were used mostly as counterpoint for various aspects of humanity the writers wanted to explore, or to serve simply as adversaries. Both Klingons and Romulans filled the latter category BTW.

    * Yes DS9 was about a station, but let's not get technical.

Anyway not trying to go off-topic, but the chip on the KDF's shoulder gets a little tiring.

Your advise to the OP is pretty good though. :)

OP: Choose Klink or Rommy if you want to be a rebel.

I started with STO before it was free, but it never grabbed me. recently I've started playing again!

I've fought my way to level 56 on my main Fed Tac captain. but this means that i'm using my level 40 ( ? ) free ship from the admiral...

1)So my first question is simple!: What ship should i be begging for??

I've seen some lovely ships float around. But what's the "best" ship for me?
For the moment I've actually got a mirror patrol escort (looks like a Promethius). Its setup with Plasma Dual Heavy Cannons, a turret, an omnibeam and a torpedo.

    2) But should I be saving for the T6 intelligence? Hazari Destroyer? Benthan Cruiser?... or something else entirely?
2a) is there an interim ship i should be getting first?

    3) i love the look of the Benthan, but its not an escort - and cant fit cannons... is this a problem?
3a) is there a ship that flys like it thats cheap i could try out 1st?
3b) is it better suited to an Engineer?

I'd open up a new thread... but apparently i cant do that yet :P

    thanks in advance

Hey guys, I'm super new to STO, and had a few questions as well (no one in chat wanted to help me lol) and I'd really appreciate any answers!

    1. How often do you get "free" ships? I recently leveled to Lt. Commander, and received my 2nd ship. Can I expect a 3rd free ship at an additional level?

    2. What do you do if you choose the "wrong" ship?

I chose to play as a 'Science Officer' (always loved em in the shows) and when choosing my 2nd ship my fanboy-ism struck and instead of choosing what I now assume to be the "correct" ship type (a science vessel) I chose a Constitution-Class Cruiser (I mean come on right?).

I realize that I'm not stuck or anything and I can certainly play still, but I was just curious if there is any fix to this, like can you swap out ship's console types (swapping the Constitution's extra engineering for science perhaps?) or even trading it/selling it for another ship/dilithium?

Or am I stuck with it? If so, I suppose there are certainly worse ships to be stuck with (and I'll manage, especially if the answer to my first question is "yes").

    3. How does one get dilithium aside from buying it with Zen? I really want to start working on getting some dilithium so that when the time comes I'll have enough to sell if for Zen and buy the ship I REALLY want (the Nebula Class Advanced Research Vessel!) without just outright buying the Zen and purchasing it.

Thanks for any and all help guys! So far this game seems awesome!

Just stick with the Connie...dont spend dil just to swap out to a different ship. When you get to level 30 you'll get another free ship token and then again at level 40. If you still want a science ship then just get it at 30.

At your level there are not a lot of options. How many character slots do you have? iirc new players get 3? so try this if you want to get started earning dilithium early. Keep leveling the Sci toon you are talking about. But if you have additional empty slots go ahead and make some other toons too. BUT just level those other toons enough to where you unlock the doff or Duty OFFicer system. There is a mission that pops up in the doff system every so often called "confiscate contraband from crew". It's under the doff assignments in the "personal" missions section. On a successful mission you will get an item called "contraband" you can trade it among your characters through your account bank or mail it to each other. When you have 5 contraband you can see an NPC and turn them in. The mission is a doff mission and it takes 4 hours to complete and it rewards 2000 unrefined dilithium. To access the doff interface look at your minimap. At the bottom edge of it look for the icon with 3 little heads, it will be right next to the dilithium store icon.

Once you hit level 50 you will have more options. My favorite which seems to yield a lot of unrefined dil per effort/time is the Dyson Ground Battlezone (BZ). It is you and two of your bridge officers along with other players and their 2 bridge officers playing against a PVE opponent. You do certain objectives like capture and defend points, and so on. Then once you reach 100% progress in the battlezone 3 boss-type encounters come up. When you start a new character like i mentioned in the previous paragraph? make it an engineer. Have it as one of your long term goals to mke that engineer a dedicated ground toon. Use him to easily farm ground battlezones. You could do it with your Sci toon too, but it seems like Engineers are more suited for solo play in the BZs due to the abilities they have available to them.

Another thing that you should do once you hit level 50 is start leveling all your reputation. When you max out a rep faction at tier 5 you get a care package from them which has a bunch of marks (which can be converted to dil or used to create gear/items). You get energy credits, expertise points, a stack of special items that can be used to create gear/items or traded in for dilithium, and you also get a stack of dilithium. Altogether when you hit tier 5 with everything i think you get around 150-180k worth of unrefined dilithium. To access your reputation tab, get to level 50, hit U and at the top click on Reputations.

In regards to your ship the Nebula is nice and it does cost 2k zen. But if you have no plans on spending real money it might take you a while to save up for it. The last free ships you get at level 40 are pretty decent. You just wont get a special console with it like you with with a Zen store ship. Also take a look at some of the mirror science vessels to see if any of them will hold you over until you are able to afford the zen ship that you like.

    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Advanced_Research_Vessel_Retrofit

    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Mirror_Universe_Science_Vessel_Retrofit
    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Mirror_Universe_Deep_Space_Science_Vessel
    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Mirror_Universe_Reconnaissance_Science_Vessel

    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Deep_Space_Science_Vessel
    http://sto.gamepedia.com/Reconnaissance_Science_Vessel

The first link is the ship that you say you wanted which costs zen. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th links are mirror ships that you can buy on the exchange for energy credits, and they are relatively dirt cheap. At level 40 you get one free ship token...the two ships in the last links are your options for that free ship token. They may not look alike but the Mirror Universe Science Vessel Retrofit probably has the most similar boff layout as the Nebula. It has the LCdr engineering seat on it. None of the other ships listed have an LCdr engineering boff seat.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Looks like I'm stuck with the Constitution, but that's okay, it could be way worse (plus who wouldn't want a constitution-class ship), and since I'm pretty low level I still have lots of other ships coming my way, and time to work on getting that Nebula (or the Recon/Mirror deep space Sci Vessel) eventually. Also I could totally be wrong (because I figure you guys would know better than I do), but I could swear that the Adv Research Vessel was only 1000 Zen. (I had myself hyped up because I managed to get 200 somehow) lol.

    3 quick questions:

1 If you take the Reman Shield you get as a mission reward on Coliseum and match that will another it part from the Reman Advanced Set will you get any of the set bonuses?

2 How effective is Plasma Hyperflux (3rd piece bonus from the Romulan Singularity Harness set) as used in normal game play? Comparing it to the Jem antiproton sweep or the Maco Beam.

3 How well does the Low Energy Signature work on the Caitian shuttle? The playable one not the carrier version.

This will be an open question thread, as I have noticed a lot of people responding only to criticize a players time/skill level/knowledge instead of helping them answer their questions, so basically, you ask a question, and there's a 99.9% chance I will know the answer :) so ask away, I'll try to check. This thread as much as possible. All hands, ask away :D

    OK here is my Q.

I am trying to make a macro to bind my primary and secondary (ground) fire buttons with my interact function. I have read a few post on the keybinding functions but cant seem to work out the exact script.

I dont care about the rotation it works in just that all three functions are bound to one key any help would be appreciated.

As I'm not a lifetime subscriber, I may not be best suited to answer this, but, from what I can tell, the only extra ships you get are (a) the Captain's Yacht/Peghqu/Daeinos and (b) ships that you have to be a higher level to fly. I know there's a Vice Admiral token and some T5 ships, which you'll be able to fly once you're level 50, but you can't use either until you level up, if I'm not mistaken.

This is correct. You cannot use the vet ships that come with the LTS until you get to level 50.
