What would bring you into PvP?

Previously I made a thread on why people PvP in this, and other games.

Feel free to peruse some of those answers: here.

It's pretty interesting, if I do say so myself.

This thread is aimed at players that do not PvP.

    The simple part:

Why do you not PvP in this, or other MMOs?

What would bring you into PvP?

For example special gear, rep system, social interaction such as teaming or player run tournaments, competition, in game rewards (EC, XP, Dil, etc), special new modes of PvP that are not available now, etc.,?

    The hard part:

While I encourage honesty, try not to flame/troll others or make insultingly derogatory comments on the reasons some do or do not pvp.

First off, thank you for ending this post with what you did, I do appreciate it when people warn others to not be rude or to "troll" etc. I wish all forums could be Peacefull.

Anyhow, what would have me enter PvP more, would be the following:

1- Reward More xp (alot of times I'm buying more character slots and then spending time leveling up the characters , I do that cause I like to create and keep new characters).
The only way to level them up fast, is by playing Episodes, leaving PvP as sort of a rare option for me.

2 - Having a more fair system in the sense that each map should only allow a certain amount of Players per team, so that it's a bit more of a fair fight between factions.

3- Perhaps have alot of Events that you can queue for PvP maps, that would ensure more of a fair fight between factions.

4- Though I have said this sort of in the first one, I suggest more Rewards, like Dil crystals or something. - [ though Ker-rat allows you about 1000 crystals, it's only once a day , and it seems, since new romulus launch, you can't replay the mission which gains you the dil anymore]

5- Last but not least- I prefer playing PvE, mainly because I know what kind of enemy I'm dealing with more, while in PvP someone who perhaps can afford more stuff from the Zen store, might be able to Blast my ship to "Kingdom Com". So I prefer to play PvE, because mainly, the enemies are easier to defeat. And to play a game, where you can't really defeat your enemy, is quite boring.

Mainly though, I think the Dil rewards and xp , are the main reasons for me, if they were given out more, then I would definitely play PvP more.

I think a better general game balance would encourage me to get more involved with pvp queues as my multi-million EC eng/cruiser would have a more meaningful place on a team as well as the same being said for my science ship. That is all.

The following is not maybe the best option of all options but one that might fit into how the rest of the game works already:

    - Implement the current rep system into the PvP world. Different rep for each different game types (Ker'rat, C&H, etc...).

    - Each rep tier Should Not provide new abilities but should unlock gear in general that can be comparable to that gained in PvE based rep grinds. New abilities at each tier eventually make PvP inaccessible and in my opinion it is vital to stay away from this path.

    - To compensate for not having new abilities at each tier, include more vanity unlocks like titles, clothing, ship skins/decals, pets (I think hanger pets would be ok even with my last point in mind). PvPers are typically more interested in showing off their goods in a fight so lean towards items other players will notice outside of a starbase.

    - Any introduction to Dil should be done with extra mining dailies in a sector that is captured based on the accumulative wins/losses of all PvP games in the zone. If this is too difficult to balance, go with the tried, tested and true model of having timed events that unlock the mining zone for 'x' hours to the victor.

    - Introduce a PvP related upgrade path to Starbases. Give dedicated PvP fleets a way to differentiate themselves. This route will also open the opportunity to work in a wave of 'PvP only' ships/weapons that have been completely rebalanced and begin the PvE/PvP separation. This is a longer term goal of course but I think it provides the best way to see true balance over the long term. It also gives Cryptic a reason to make more money in the store which I accept as being important.

    - My last idea would be to add a ranked leaderboard for both players and fleets, searchable from the web or at least in-game by anyone.

A "stock ships" option as a separate queue where you get a menu when joining to choose your ship's loadout from white mk x equipment with no special consoles/weapons even if your ship came equipped with them. Active doffs and doff assignment buffs would be disabled, you just make the most of your ship, captain skills, and boff powers.

    Starbase vs Starbase siege!

    (For space)

    Then for ground

Base camp 1 vs Base camp 2.
Hopefully I'll come back from my break; this break is fun; I play intellectual games.

    I hope STO get's better ...

I sign this. Really great idea.

Probably it has been said before, a ranking system with rewards (cosmetic or otherwise)would make PvP more desirable.

I have never had a good experience in PVP with any game. It is usually full of people who want to "pown" everyone and prove that they are the best. I kind of got tired of confirming that the people I want to associate with - helpful, respectful, kind folks - just get crowded out of pvp because of what it is. I recognize it may not be the same in every game but it has been my experience and I don't feel the need to confirm it again.

I don't mind people playing pvp, I think it's great if you enjoy it, it's just not for me. My choice, my decision, but I don't think anything would convince me to try pvp again.

Plus I am a casual player, with family, job, rl, etc. I don't have the time to commit to being good in pvp so why participate in something I can never excel at.

What would entice me to give PvP real go in this game? I?m not quite sure. I do know that I sorely miss the old deathmatch days with UT and Quake. Other than the occasional power-up, we all met as equals, with the same weapons at our disposal, with only skill and determination as the REAL determining factor. The problem is that STO may not be able to strike such an elegant balance due to mechanics. I?d like to see Cryptic make a serious try at it, though.

I believe Elite Force had the quake engine. Which of course I haven't played for over a decade and don't think I even have the disk for anymore. Never played EF2 so can't vouch for that game, but I used to love the anti-grav CTF matches :D

PVP communities are horrible. Once you get into PVP it no longer turns into a game for most people so you can't have fun anymore. It is the same for a game that has the WOW style of endgame raiding where you have to grind for hours to get the necessary gear to get to the next grind. Every body becomes the same build and you are treated like dirt if you don't conform.

Basically because it is PvP. Which usually brings a couple of things together :

In PvE you will always be able to challange the hardest stuff in second best gear. And in a variety of builds. Also it doesn't harm you, if other players get better or better equipped.
In PvP you compete with other players. If other players get better equippment, your chances dwindle. If you take your time with progression, you loose. Also people start to build specifically to exploit weaknesses of famous builds which starts a circle of respeccing.

This breeds a mindset, i don't like. I don't want to compete with other gamers with more time or more money or closer circles of friends for premades and otherwise loose the game. I am happy to takle the challanges the developers designed whenever i have the gear i need and with likeminded people who want us all to succed. It can even be far more challanging then usual STO missions, I don't need to win. But i won't partake in an armsrace against other players.

Now in games like this, where you can buy an advantage, it gets worse. PvE can be done without Lockbos-ships and the like, it has to be designed this way or players will leave as soon as they notice. But PvP ? It is not cryptics fault, if other players invest the money for more power. If PvP would ever be the mayor part of the game and PvE meaningless, people would instantly start to compete for the best build with real money. Well, at least far more then now. And that is the sort of competition i like even less, but have seen in some asian microtransaction PvP-centered MMOs.

Last thing is that a huge part of the playerbase consists of either bad losers or people boosting their ego by humiliating their opponent after a victory. While PvE can produce its own fair share of not so nice language (e.g. in eSTFs with pikers) those verbal abuses and cheating accusations hurled at each other in PvP-dedicated chat tend to be far worse.

So, i rarely PvP. I would do it once in a while, while bored. Or take on a challange. And i do like the tactical challange of real people once in a while. But at heart i am no PvPer and won't become one.

All the fuss about the Plasmonic Leach console showed again, how much many PvPer care about the options of their competitors and how nice they treat each other. Can't imagine a similar "discussion" about PvE equippment.

i couldn't have said it better myself i myself like to pvp i have pvped in every game i played weather it be on my 360 or on mmo's but with the outlandish cost's just to be competetive pvp isn't in the cards for me i cant afford to spend money on buying the best gear and if i devote all my time to grinding for the gear i would have no time to enjoy the game so i'll be sticking with pve but i would love to see an ingame channel for us pve players

well said but honestly they can treat me like dirt all they like cause i could care less what they say i do just fine in pve with gear i farm from missions even in sto's so i dont need all that extra stuff besides i got my friends in fleet and some decent people in the universe i can talk to

Tried it a couple of times. I knew I was going to lose, being a newbie and all, so really the intent was to see if I could even last long enough to pick up anything and not outright embarass myself. My longest life was 18 seconds after the shooting started (4 on 1, for a first-timer, not a lot of options).

The thing is, thats when the PM jackassery started. It wasn't enough to simply demolish someone who had no chance to begin with, but then so enthusiastically inform them that their kind was unwelcome in Your area. Charming individuals.

Tried again about a week later. Different people, same results, same attitude of obnoxious self-importance and elitism.

A couple days later, tried with a KDF toon instead. 3 for 3.

Came to the forums with an admittedly frustrated post that ultimately amounted to "WTH just happened?" The only responses I got were a couple of extremely prominent PVPers who seemed more interested in mocking newbies than anything else, as I've since learned is so common around here. The closest thing to help I got was 'yeah the first year or so is gonna be a lot of butthurt. Get used to it.'
Even discounting the additional time and effort required to pick up the additional skillset, why would I WANT to associate with those kinds of people? Its not the mechanics, its the attitude.

you cant let those people get to you i have seen there kind come and go in fact i have beaten alot of them or watched them get beat so called elitests and even when they lose there still just as abusive i have pvp'd for along time and nothing amuses me more or makes me laugh harder when people try to act like there better then every one else every one is tough when you start out but sooner or later they all start losing
