Why do you not PvP in this, or other MMOs?

Because I prefer cooperative play over competitive play and because I don't care to associate with the kind of people who tend to PvP in these games.

The problem with PvP is the PvPers. :(
What would bring you into PvP?

    Turn it into PvE.

If I can work towards PvE goals in a fashion that assists PvP -- while not being subjected to PvP myself -- then I'd happily do so on the condition that I'm sufficiently rewarded for doing so.

This game has PvP? None that I've ever seen. The only thing that's apparent to me about PvP in this game is that Cryptic has taken every opportunity to try and kill it off completely. There is no attention paid to it from a programming perspective so in order for me to 'engage' in it first it must exist, and then be accessible, and after that not horribly broken, and after that hopefully not to be charged $$$ for it in some way.

    The simple part:

Why do you not PvP in this, or other MMOs?
There are some where I do and some where I do not. In STO I tried it but stopped and probably will never do so again. In all cases the reason is ePeen, name calling, insulting, elitism, and general rudeness. Across all games I have played, including STO, the elitism is strongest among hard-core raiders (here it's the premade ESTF guys who cuss and then drop team if an optional fails) and dedicated PVPrs who believe that PvE is boring and anyone who doesn't have the absolute best of the best gear and skills doesn't belong in the game. Also, PvP communities have at least 5 times the griefers as PvE (where typically the worst offenders are AFKers). For example, the people who refuse to post about bugs they can exploit for fear the devs will fix them.

Kick all of those jack-a@#$@ out of the game forever and I'll try PvP again. A good start would be removing all PvP for a year or two then re-enable it. I'll be there on day one.

What would bring you into PvP?
a community of PvPrs who didn't care if they won or lost but were just out to have fun. And where there were tiers of play based on ship gear. Rewards are irrelevant to me, special gear is actually a deterrent. I feel that people should be able to get all the gear in the game from PvP or PvE depending on their preference, as well as level from 1 to 50 with either method. Putting limits never made sense.

Until you're already good at X you can't get the gear to be good at it.

If you can win at PvP enough to get the gear, you obviously don't need the special PvP gear. If you can't win you'll never get it. Thus it should not exist at all.

Let people play whatever content they want.

I don't do PVP for several reasons.

1 - Time, most of what time I get to play. Is to do missions, and the alts. With them adding more stuff to do. That will keep me busy for a while yet. Plus I just started with a Romulan so that is more to play.

2 - Gear and Scale. I played in PVP battlegrounds before. They was not scaled and not fun at all. You had guys in there for a while with all the best gear. And for one starting out was cannon fodder. Until you died your way to some gear before you finally became a contender.

3 - Attitude. They go it "alone" so you loose most of the time. As they rather go solo and be a hero. Thus your party dies and looses. And I saw some bad attitudes as well on the chats due to frustration of loosing. And party falling apart.

I agree with this. PVE and PVP do not go well together. At all. Balance in one can be devastating to the other.

In the name of balance, PVP destroys the individuality of character builds because everybody has to be on a level playing field. Everybody has to be able to hold their own in a PVP battle

That shouldn't be the case in an RPG. The whole point to various classes, professions, etc, is so different people are valuable in different situations. If you're going into a fist fight, Worf is the officer to take, but if you need a warp core repaired, Geordi's your guy.

In PVP, both of them have to be able to do the same basic things. And if they don't do the same basic things, they have to be perfectly counter-balanced with each other in a Paper-Rock-Scissors kind of way.

This absolutely destroys immersion in MMOs, and immersion is why I play MMOs. In life, people aren't perfectly balanced to each others' strengths and weaknesses. Some people are great at one thing, but terrible at a dozen other things.

If we didn't have to factor in that balance, PVE would have much more freedom to focus on developing realistic characters.

Now, I have nothing against PVP. If that's what's fun to you, that's fantastic. I just think trying to shoehorn them into the same game almost always detracts from both aspects.

What would bring you into PvP?

Previously I made a thread on why people PvP in this, and other games.

Feel free to peruse some of those answers: here.

It's pretty interesting, if I do say so myself.

This thread is aimed at players that do not PvP.

    The simple part:

Why do you not PvP in this, or other MMOs?

Its not the kind of Star Trek experience I'm looking for. Or in most other MMO cases its not the in-universe story/character development I'm looking for. I played some APB occasionally. Its a PvP only game, but nothing I could play for hours like STO. Also its not equipment heavy (even if some players might say otherwise ;) ).

What would bring you into PvP?

For example special gear, rep system, social interaction such as teaming or player run tournaments, competition, in game rewards (EC, XP, Dil, etc), special new modes of PvP that are not available now, etc.,?

Passive skills like with the current reputation would probably bring me short term to pvp (I would still dislike it) since this would in most cases also improve the PVE strenght of a character.

If the rewards are in all cases only have PvP use it would not bring me in.

    The hard part:

While I encourage honesty, try not to flame/troll others or make insultingly derogatory comments on the reasons some do or do not pvp.

I hope that qualifies as honest without trolling :)

I thought I would try out PVP as I haven't done it for a long time, what I encountered was un killable opponent literally I couldn't drop their shields for love nor money it was so one sided I left.

Now I know my kit wasn't great wasn't even pvp prepared it was literally just a what is it like.

Now what pvp needs is a balancing not at end game but between players, it should be that if I am brand new to pvp I should be allowed to hone my skills against other people similary equipped but I was put up against all these other players I didn't really stick a chance. Didn't matter what my power levels were on didn't matter what skill set I had it didn't make a difference even doing an alpha strike against another player with a full barrage didn't even drop their shields slightly.

So pvp is off the radar for me until I get the full set of everything for end game which will be months away.

what would bring me to pvp? remove the lobi ships and balance out the books on weapons, so ACCx3 isnt always the answer. on ground, loose the special stuff. when the playing field is more balanced and no matter what weapon you have, everyone else has an equal chance, thats good enough for me to return.

the only other option is to remove pvp altogether.

Truly sounds like a fun bunch that I would want to spent time with :P,

Gear/skill problems aside for new/casual players it is the attitude that seems to drive people away from pvp after a couple of tries. Not all pvpers are like this and a lot just want to pew-pew and have fun but there are enough that it drives anyone with a casual interest right outta the ques. Even allowing for the fact that romulan-kdf players don't get a pvp tutorial or any of the usually kdf-pvp dilithium missions: turret killer, captain killer, starship kills at present, unless something is done so that new players can join into a mostly level playing environment at least to start then pvp will never grow in this game.

casual players will say mmm lets see what this pvp thing is all about:
    - Que for match, get spawn camped, or just rolled, they got loled at in zone chat for being a noob
    - player thinks ouch that didn't seem that fun, so player either never tries it again or plays just to go afk to get the dilithium.

Skill can be learned, gear can be bought, attitudes people encounter determines whether a player in a group event continues to find it something fun to do or to just avoid it.

Me into PVP. I think the ability to win without paying money.

Almost like Planet Side 2. I ranked up 11 levels with just the weapon you get when you start.

In STO. To win you cant use standard, you have to use the very best weapons and ships. Like I cant go into pvp with a Galaxy often and win.

Make it so I can win with my Galaxy or any other older ships at VA level and i might try PVP again.

PvP can be fun in this game at times, and have even had some people offer suggestions with skill choices and explanations.

Though the trashtalking and general nastiness of some kind of killed the enjoyment of it all. It's not always from the other side either, just over competitiveness brings out the worst in some I suppose.

Why do you not PvP in this, or other MMOs?

The short answer? Because PvP isn't why I log in to STO.

The longer answer? I play STO because it's Star Trek. I want to be entertained by a Star Trek story. PvP is just ships blowing each other up...that's not Star Trek. That's just...well...ships blowing each other up.
What would bring you into PvP?

Prolly nothing. Not unless they could figure out how to make PvE/PvP hybrid missions that had an interesting, engaging story. ;)

PvP you have 2 groups it seems.

The Kick Me, cannon fodder group that has poor equipment, little experience and the other group, escort flying, cloaked max DPS types that will eat you in a second and be gone chasing after some other noob, nom nom.

There are two solutions to help PvP players especially those like me who falls into the noob category.

    1) In World of Tanks game there is an excellent matchmaking system that pits tanks of similar ranks against each other. The ranking is based on tier of tank not whether the tank is heavy or light etc. There should be a matchmaking system that pits ships together based on their loadouts and types. However there is a flaw to this, a well equipped ship doesn't take ability into account.

    2) Another matchmaking method should be based on ability. if you keep winning matches, or rack up lots of kills you move up the rank table. So your next matches will be against players more to your ability. If you lose matches or are killed often with few kills of your own, you drop ranks down to a more manageable level.

If one or the other is implemented then I will play a lot more. At the moment its a meat grinder and I hate being the meat.

Personally, if PvP Queues were more responsive and did not mind starting faster even with smaller groups, i might be convinced to join more often.

As the queues are now, often i queue but hate waiting ages so i start doing other stuff or queue for STF and when PvP finally starts, i refuse because i am already involved into something else or already in a STF.

Also, the limit of 3 events you can queue in is a bit annoying. Id like to be able to apply ot more events at once.

Finally, gimme more rewards for PvPing, like direct Dilithium reward at end of match and i might be convinced to join more often.

Thing is, while i am PvPing, i am not upgrading my ship or getting better stuff, so PvP need to reward me for the loss opportunity. And seriously, 10000 EC as of what we get now, is way not enough a compensation for the drops, dilithium and marks id be getting doing something else.

I totally agree with you. Kills should be recorded, so would your sturdiness if you never get killed. Players with best records should be pitted against each others.

But i doubt there are enough players doing PvP here to warrant the creation of a PVP record list and matchmaking system...

so, after being away from the game for a while in real life matters i decided i would give it another try and get into pvp more.
since i only have around 1h of daily game time tops right now, i thought about educating myself a bit on the pvp forums about whats up before playing.

here's my problem: with an extremely limited time-frame is there any way to get into pvp and learn something. i just spend 3 breakfast breaks in a row reading pvp guides and i feel confused.

i have no clue what the people there are talking about, i can only assume it's about powers or items. and after i read the word "metagame" the third time in one guide i quit reading.
maybe i should just have q'ed up and shoot people like i did before...reading about pvp made it seem like a really boring and tedious job that involves studying and scripting.

I have played many MMORPGs and MOBAs. I have PVP?ed regularly in almost all of them and even been in the top of a few when I felt motivated rather than just banging heads for kicks and giggles. I think the current PVP system as implemented in game needs to be re-evaluated.

Power creep via cash shop, lock boxes, and simply the changes in design philosophy over time have created imbalances between potential load outs and available ships. A ship / console / weapon re-balance is needed to bring everything into line one more.

Too many keybinds and macros turn a game you play into a thing you program. It also takes the actual skill out of play. I hate them. Nothing beats watching the guy with the gaming board and mouse brag about being faster than the poor guy on a laptop for disgust. Methods of control need adjustment to put more people on equal ground in a time where laptops occupy more desks than desktops.

PVP with a point rules all. I wish STO could learn a thing or three from WvW in GW2 or the scenario matches in The Secret World for example. Since many of these MMO?s are considered PVE centric they actually introduced PVE elements into PVP to make them appealing to more of their actual player base rather than left as a thing ignored by the majority. It?s an example I feel STO could really benefit from.

I admit, if I were doing PVP for STO I might have followed a path inspired by Lord of the Rings Online. With this IP people are looking for the Trek experience more than the challenge and typical PVP goes against it?s nature. I mean when I want PVP challenge I go play a MOBA and get right to the point. They simply do PVP better. No BS from leveling to gearing involved we go fight on mostly equal terms right then. When I want an experience I pick up an MMORPG.

We live in an era of the bad and selfish attitude and its so prevalent that I am not sure most of us really want to play games with each other anymore because it turns into something ugly and sick rather than fun. Both PVP and STFs are perfect examples of this. I was always the sort to be appreciative of a fight good or bad in that I play for fun and keep in mind that there is a human being on the other side. Like Barry Sanders in his day I was one to hand the ball to ref once I scored then line up to do it again rather than dance in the in zone for five minutes. There is something wrong with some of these people and a means to see them left to play with themselves would be appreciated. As it is, its like being afraid to go to the Y because to many street gangs moved into the neighborhood.

In today?s game environment you need a pug friendly system for pick up games between individuals and a separate bracket for pre-made groups and rated competitions. Want to be pro? Fine compete with the other pros. Let the kids looking for play ground fun play in peace rather than trying to be a bullying street gang.

I am not sure how to tackle this point or present it well. It's that I am getting older and so is the majority of the MMO player base in the Western market and a lot of us even play with family. Something needs to change in who developers are making their game for in that regard as I swear childish design elements bring out childish behavior and reduces appeal.

I actually sat here trying to figure out what you were going on about for a few minutes. You have too big a chip on your shoulder over this issue and perhaps feel too resentful. I am not talking down to you or anyone. I am describing a mind set or how some approach the game vs others to make a point that?s a rather a reasonable request on how to cater to more of the population. Anymore, I am one of the kids more often than not too.

Personally, I am not sure how anyone can fix your time issues for you other than writing; enjoy what you can and stop fretting over being L337. Its just a game and if those things taking up your time are the good stuff like family and friends then you already won the real battle.
