I don't see why anyone would care. New LTS purchasers will not in any capacity influence previous LTS purchasers' gameplay.
STO has virtually no incentive for one to purchase a monthly subscription beyond the foundry, let alone a LTS. This was a great idea. In fact, I might actually buy a LTS now. Before this change I would never have even considered it.
Because you'll get, what, Veteran Rewards? Really? Obvious troll is obvious.
Regardless, the idea is that they've ruined the concept of "Veteran Rewards." One no longer has to wait the 1,000 days to get all Veteran Rewards... he can now pay for it. They've essentially put it in the C-Store. Which is LAME.

What is making people pissed here is the manner in which this is happenening.
A lot of us have been wainting for the longest time to finally get to 1000 days.
The suspense until we finally get some infos on what to expect, then the leaked pictures teasing us, then finally the official blog congratulating us for our loyalty and how the rewards are Cryptic'S way of thanking us for spending all this time with their game and then turning around 5 minutes later putting up another blog and sell out those "meaningful" rewards for the most loyal fans to anyone with some spare change...
BINGO!!!
Although i am more worried about why they are doing it......seems a bit of a desprate act to sell more LTS by changing the rewards thing at such a late date....sound almost like a everything must go sale.

I wouldn't count them out yet... but this DOES seem a little suspicious.
On the other hand, they have said they're looking for "Bonuses" to add to the Lifetime Subscription. So it also wouldn't seem remiss that they somehow thought this was a good idea, simply because of that.

I only started playing STO when it became F2P and after 3 weeks I went LTS despite literally everyone telling me its a bad or uneconomical idea. As of today, I am merely a 250 day vet so the next patch day is going to be Christmas for me.
The way I see it Lifers are like me, people who love Star Trek and can see themselves spending years a game set in the Trek universe. If you really want to hate me for getting 1000-day rewards without having played 1000 days, I'm alright with it as it does not influence my love for all things Trek. However, I do have to question what are you doing in a Star Trek universe without adopting the good values Star Trek enshrines.

Maybe you would prefer to see your Vet Rewards remain the old way.
Then probably no one would buy a Lifetime sub at this point.
But! You would be very special and unique with your Veteran ship. Only a very few of you are at 1000 days most likely.
You would enjoy your uniqueness, bragging rights and be showing off to everyone around until...
STO shuts down next month.
So... If selling Vet Rewards and goodies or anything can keep the game going so you can also enjoy your new stuff, why blame Cryptic for doing anything they can to get people to put money in this game?
Because in the end, anything that can keep the game going is worth doing, even selling Vet Rewards if need be. They will just rename the whole thing and move on from here. They need money, and everything is on the table and opened to modification. Like they say, Gameplay Experience May Change.
Vet Reward concept is an old school concept that is not very compatible with FTP MMOs. Even old City of Heroes got rid of it when it gone FTP.
Vet Rewards were not making much sense anymore and were not worth continuing because the more time passes, Devs end creating goodies that will be usable by always less and less players that manage to reach the far end. It is counter-productive. Well, nowadays it is viewed like that.
So is Season 7 going to be the last for STO? As it is for most T.V. shows?
Nope.
Any MMO that doesn't die at launch inevitably tends to live on for quite some time, or is killed by issues unrelated to success or lack thereof.
All this will do is tick off some (more) people and generate (yet more) bad word of mouth, which in turn will slow down the influx of new players to a degree, as bad word of mouth will tend to do.

Yeah, but the thing is...Veteran Rewards... not many people are actually going to pay $300, or even $200 for LTS. Adding Veteran Rewards won't make it more appetizing to pay that much money for.
As it stands, it's a money-grab that's not going to get them what they want... all it's doing is pissing off many old-time subscribers (Gold and Lifer), pleasing a VERY SMALL group of late-lifers, and if they're lucky, getting a FEW people to buy new LTS.
It's not going to be too effective...

Get serious. Hyperbole undermines your case, it doesn't make it.
It's DAMNED hard to get an MMO to actually shut down due to revenue issues since it's comparatively cheap to put one into maintenance mode and run it in a closet somewhere.
And Cryptic's big seller is Zen by way of people trying to get lockbox keys. It's not subscriptions of any type, and more or less sub sales is never going to sink or float the boat.
This is a money grab. Don't mistake this for a fleeting attempt to keep the lights on. It's not.

It amazes me how ludicrous it sounds when people cry fowl because in essence they desire folks to wait in line, for "PERKS," out of all things. As I stated before that these perks should be given off the bat, It is akin to buying a collector's edition Plus.
The concept of "Vet rewards" is best removed all together; If anything, the Vet Rewards should just be in "TITLE" only. Much like accolades for accomplishments.
Why does it matter if you get it now or later? In the end you'll attain it. Thing is, its an ego thing going around stating "Look at my shiny Toy." I deserve it first because I played STO since day one, no other need apply.
I am happy that new Lifers get all the virtual perks right off the bat - I say again, play the game, enjoy STO, make friends, and continue to support STO

Actually, i believe alot of Gold subscibers will do like me and jump on the LFT opportunity because it is REALLY a WIN WIN situation this time.
Without yesterday advertisement, i would have kept my monthly Gold sub going just as usual because i was not seeing any good reason to pay upfront for Months of Subs.
Look. 2 days ago, if i decided to buy a Lifetime Sub, i would have get almost NOTHING. Nothing fast enough anyway to enjoy in a timely manner. Who wants to buy a Lifetime subscription in an old game where you would still have to wait 700 days before grabbing the coolest reward?
Today, it IS different. Yes, you pay upfront the value of 13 months of subscription but you DO get all the good stuff right here and there! Let me tell you that ALOT of Gold subbers are thinking fast right now and doing maths.
If you like STO and plan to play it for at least one more year, buying a Lifetime sub today is REALLY a clever move.

So you wouldn't be upset if you waited in line for a very long time and someone just walks by you and got the goodies before you did?
That's what people are really angry about, it's not about the titles or the perks. Its that we waited a very long time and when we finally finish line of the 1000 days, Cryptic trips us and rushes someone to the finish line before us. Which really sends a negative message that they value money more than those who been putting money of new LTSs than those who steadily supported and put money into this game since before Day 1.
It amazes me how ludicrous it sounds when people cry fowl because in essence they desire folks to wait in line, for "PERKS," out of all things.
That is absolutely what some of us expect .
It is also about saying that I've played nice . I've waited . I did my dues . I supported Cryptic . I got promoted slowly .
Yet you have no problem with someone else essentially buying that same promotion .
You know ... , I wish STO didn't mirror RL this much .
Thing is, its an ego thing going around stating "Look at my shiny Toy." I deserve it first because I played STO since day one, no other need apply.

I don't see anyone in the forums saying : don't pay your dues .
But I guess they should ... ,'cause why pay your dues when you can buy them , right ?

Again with lines, that don't exist.
Players are mad because they won't be able to fly around and show off their toys, and feel special when they get a PM from someone asking where they get that from, and the player with a smile says, its a Vet reward for I am special.

Veteran Rewards are a FAIL concept which most new and even old MMOs are slowly retiring from.
1 ) As MMOs gets older, the path to the highest Reward gets ridiculously far away and often potential subscribers will even wonder if the game still be there for them to achieve it.
2 ) Players tend to expect always better and better perk/reward as they achieve higher milestones. The problem is that most often, there is only a handful of really dedicated players left that will actually grab the highest reward. So devs waste lot of time and energy to devise great stuff that only a few selected people will get to enjoy? Bad business practice right there.
3 ) Some unique Titles or Accolades for very old players can make sense since they are cheap dev resource investment and i woudl not be surprised if that would be somewhat preserved in a way or another.
4 ) At this point, for Cryptic to convince people to jump into a Lifetime subscription, they really needed to "sweeten the pot" and getting rid of an archaic old school model at the same time is a very clever move from them imho.
How do you know the din't run out of cups ? Again . :P
Even if PWE cuts off their cup supply like Atari apparently did, it won't kill the game. The only thing that's likely to kill the game is CBS getting persnickety with the license, or PWE deciding the resources here would be better used elsewhere, which isn't likely to happen since...
(a) it's cheap to keep an MMO going sans-development, and hard not to turn some kind of profit there, thus it's always somewhat worthwhile to do as opposed to simply shutting down.
(b) Champions Online isn't spectacularly more successful than STO, so there's really no sign that Cryptic as an entity can pull off something spectacularly more successful, and thus more worthy of the involved resources. Nor does it make sense to divert resources there.
(c) they're currently running another MMO and developing a third. Realistically it would always make more sense to shift labor and run this in maintenance mode than shutter any doors. Don't need a lot of cups where there's a minimum of people. And should the game pick up when, say, the new Trek movie comes out? They shift people back.
(d) Champions Online seems to be doing worse business than STO, and seems to have been doing worse business than STO all along, and yet it's still up and running, even without $25 ships (yet) or lottery boxes that are anywhere near as abusive.
Go tell that to my City Of Heroes friends and to NCSoft.
Sometimes, it is simpler to shut down a game than put it into maintenance mode.
Nah, CoX was a whole 'nother ballgame. That was an executive decision at NCSoft to refocus on other products using other types of revenue streams which are (or at least were at the time) showing a greater success rate. There's no such avenue here. PWE has nothing more successful at Cryptic to focus those resources into. Cryptic has two launched products, both very similar in framework and this one is more successful. NW isn't out the door yet, and is still built on the same foundation... so no bright and shining option there either.
What, you think they want to double down on Champions, despite it doing worse? Or that they'll shutter Cryptic as a whole after spending what they did to acquire them? Their shareholders would feed them their own butts...
Players are mad because they won't be able to fly around and show off their toys, and feel special when they get a PM from someone asking where they get that from, and the player with a smile says, its a Vet reward for I am special.
A fallacal argument.
Anyone can get that "I'm better than you" from a simple lockbox ship, or being the first to buy a C-Store ship and publicly display it for the masses.
So you wouldn't be upset if you waited in line for a very long time and someone just walks by you and got the goodies before you did?

I agree totally......i assume they will have to change the name now seeing as Vet reward were brought in as a reward for the time you sub to the game.......possibly a new name would be fire sale rewards. lol

Interesting comment. I respect your point of view. I still believe getting rid of an archaic Vet Reward model is a good move thought. More to gain than to lose for Cryptic imho.

Let me tell you that ALOT of Gold subbers are thinking fast right now and doing maths.
And how do those maths work out as a Win/Win ?
There were folks who subbed close to 1000 days and they gave Cryptic $800+ , just by their sub .
Now Cryptic is selling the same "game time / experience" for $200-300 .
Sure it might be worth it for the player , but is it worth it to Cryptic ?
Not to mention , how many subbers are thinking : "well now I don't have to pay any more !" .
Do you know how wrong that is (unless you treat STO like a second job) ?
So in the end you're telling the players to "support Cryptic" , but on the other hand you're pro-LTS (which takes away a lot of money from Cryptic on the long run , because subs make Cryptic more money on the long run) .
Interesting comment. I respect your point of view. I still believe getting rid of an archaic Vet Reward model is a good move thought. More to gain than to lose for Cryptic imho.
It actually could be. But Cryptic should have handled it better (which almost goes without saying for Cryptic).
They should have either announced this much earlier, and handed out a few minor trinkets to keep the natives happy (a title for old school vets, maybe some Dilithium Ore, a handful of lockbox keys and, say, a couple Very Rare Items or DOffs). or waited a while past the actual 1000 Day mark... like at the 1100 Day mark, giving the old schoolers 100 Days of exclusive access to the cherry on top of the sundae. Or that and the trinkets.
They did none of that. Thus there will, as usual, be ill will which Cryptic should have foreseen (since as usual it was blindingly obvious), could have prevented, and absolutely earned...
... Hell, look at Geko's Twitter comment from yesterday...

Who said no other need apply ?
That is my own humble opinion.
A fallacal argument.
Anyone can get that "I'm better than you" from a simple lockbox ship, or being the first to buy a C-Store ship and publicly display it for the masses.
I agree totally......i assume they will have to change the name now seeing as Vet reward were brought in as a reward for the time you sub to the game.......possibly a new name would be fire sale rewards. lol
of course, but the Vet ship would have been the mother of all...Haha I'm special because you have to wait 3 years to get this...till now
Interesting comment. I respect your point of view. I still believe getting rid of an archaic Vet Reward model is a good move thought. More to gain than to lose for Cryptic imho.
Really ?
So you would have given them more money in the long run ?
So which is it ?
