Boeing Bird of Prey
The Boeing Bird of Prey was a black project aircraft.
It developed technology and materials which would later be used on Boeing's X-45 unmanned combat air vehicle.
The aircraft's name is a reference to the Klingon Bird of Prey warship from the Star Trek television series.
There is also the
F-22 'Raptor', and
Klingons have 'Raptors'.
I just found out something disturbing about the Klingons from
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Apparently, they were strongly compared to the TRIBBLE: Kirk's reference at the table about the "breathing room" and the
color theme for the Klingon banners.
Does U.S. military equate itself to the late Klingons now?
The latest Klingons from JJ Abrams ST movie look... like
'beasts' under helmets.
I don't like this at all.
Maybe Star Trek is not for me.

Egad, do they really have to reimagine Klingons again? I knew they might need some updating to match modern movie realism, but that... Were-Shredder!?
That's just a cheap ploy to go after the TMNT and Twilight fans.

Apache
Kiowa

Birds of prey is an unofficial term for raptor-type birds (eagles, hawks, etc). These birds are known for swooping down and snatching their prey while looking majestic while doing it. So obviously, you can understand why the military would use those names.
Plus, having the Bald Eagle be our mascot helps.

The ultimate homage to Star Trek is still the fact that fans managed to convince NASA to name the first shuttle Enterprise. :P
But remember that the Enterprise was so named because of the famous carrier USS Enterprise that fought in WWII.

Yeah there's that too. They've been trading names back and forth for a long time; a lot of Star Trek ships have been named after real ones... or they at least share a name even if it was unintentional.
Well, Gene was heavily influenced by real ships. The Enterprise and the Yorktown being sister ships, for example.

Not sure how "re-imaged" they are until we see under their helmets. After all, the whole point of the helmets was to keep it ambiguous whether their foreheads were smooth or had the ridges of TMP and beyond.
That might make it more tolerable. Might. Those helmets look really.... stupid...
Particularly if they play up the more agressive nature where subordinates get promotion by killing their superior etc.
As for ships etc being named after each other - remember Raptor is most likely a federation assigned name for the family style of craft, same as Bird of Prey. I wish they had thought to give this a true klingon class name in ENT when it appeared.

The TOS Klingons were very much patterned after the old Soviet Union. In later portrayals a certain Nazism did creep in... but let's be honest. The difference between radical National Socialism and Soviet style Communism amounts to hairsplitting at best... :P
Also, the US Navy has had a ship named Enterprise it's entire history. I have a suspicion that the US will never not have a ship named Enterprise. If we built an FTL ship tomorrow, I would wager that it would be named Enterprise.
