I am exorbitantly excited for this. Sony makes things that are ridiculously hard to mess with, but Microsoft never goes to such extreme measures, making all of their Xbox consoles and controllers more moddable.
I'm sure the new features could be cool, too.

I know that Kerrat is seen as a good place to get Mk XII gear, but I was wondering if anybody had tried the T'Kanis Nebula Empire Defense area on Elite as an alternative. Wondering how the drops compare to Kerrat since it's a single player area and thus you don't have to compete with others for the drops.

since when does the t'kanis nebula drop mk xii gear?
According to all the information I've seen setting the difficulty to Elite will allow for the chance of Mk XII drops as well as (supposedly) enabling Very Rare drops and increasing the chances of Uncommon and Rare drops.
I've never seen it myself, but then outside of STFs I've not played with the difficulty upped above Normal save for a couple of trial runs that convinced me I wasn't quite ready to play on that level.
well, i can tell you right now that all the purple drops i've been getting from EC farming missions since i started doing them, i got on normal difficulty, so elite doesn't enable purple drops, though it may make them drop a little more often

MK XII was confirmed by devs only to drop from level 54 enemies or above. Which are only in the warzones. So no, you won't find MK XII gear in a level 50 instance.
