UK, Virgin Media - unable to connect to patch server, request timed out. Was fine before the patch today, never had this before.

I'm with Virgin Media too and I'm having exactly the same problem.

The patch server/launch server is fine, it's NOT there.. People can patch and launch, it's a problem with the network, mostly from broadband networks - lesser "deemed" bandwidth networks seem to also be fine, this points to a load balancing routing issue. Which is likely located at their ISP's (for efficiency).

if this is the case then why can i update any steam game i have and patch at 2.5MB/S ? , sto is the only game i have problems with launching

As someone already posted, a working solution is to use mobile tethering and your phone's 3G connection if you can. Once you get past the launcher you can enter the game, then switch back to your previous connection and play. Worked for me . :)

Because the patching mechanism is NOT steam based.

It's not the update server, or everyone - even those that use mobile networks would have the same issue. My conjecture is: it's an upstream load balancer.

Would a screendump of my PayPal account be satisfactory? Also, why exactly do you think you have the right to tell people that they fail at life and should not live?

Bah... I'm not arguing with you. My parents taught me it was rude to have a battle of wits with a clearly unarmed opponent.

Well I am not sure where you live but in the great country of the United States we have the right of free speech (part of the first amendment, right before the right to bear arms...). That in turn DOES give me the right to say whatever I want, and considering I am likely far more intelligent than you (noting that my statement was made largely for those who do NOT pay for the game, and not the paid players...) I would invite you to engage in a battle of wits with me at anytime. You may think I am unarmed all you wish... all the fools do :).

As someone already posted, a working solution is to use mobile tethering and your phone's 3G connection if you can. Once you get past the launcher you can enter the game, then switch back to your previous connection and play. Worked for me . :)

If you think I'm going to run right out and buy an iphone so I can long into this game you are out of your $#TRIBBLE! mind.

Since my computer is connect with wire only lan I can't use my phone for a internet connection so all the advise to do so does not work for me. I need a suggestion that does not require my cell phone.

correction, this has everything to do with cryptic, they pay cogent to route the game through certain areas.. cryptic constantly tells us cogent is at the route of most of the problems with connection issues, they have been saying it for years.. so it is their problem that they have not fixed the problem (either by making a new arrangement with cogent, or going with another provider)..

It takes a little more effort to switch providers at a business end than at your home. You can't just shop online for those available in your neighborhood and switch with a phone call. Cogent may give them the most cost effective solution they can work with that this time. We are not privy to their financial information so could never venture a guess. Bandwidth is far more expensive then people realize.

Since things are working just fine on Cryptics end and other users can connect, the issue is obviously cogent. Of course Cryptic is the party responsible for communicating and assisting with cogent to restore access to their servers for those who currently are unable to, but that doesn't mean it's their fault for things still being offline.

In any case, I've had bad dealings with cogent and can sympathize with your point that they should switch (if they hit a point where they are capable of doing so). The website I work on switched to Amazon's web services and haven't looked back. Maybe it's something they are currently looking into (or should).

Yeah, each game gets patched from it's supplier, NOT from steam... So it's NOT steam based. Hence you can patch away for anything else that DOESN'T use the same network (i.e. PWE's network).

As I'm British, I don't need a document telling me what I can say. But, by your standards, I can tell you to shut up.
Arrogance. Truly inspiring. I'm sure you're single, since no woman would possibly want you. (And thanks to the First Amendment of YOUR Constitution, I can say that).
You said your statement was made largely for those who do NOT pay for the game. Really? How were people supposed to know that? Oh, yes. Telepathy. Because your mind is like those books for children. Three pages long and chewable.
Don't you just love the right to free speech?
