Server down - fine. But my client triggered a reboot of my pc - and it looks like it did the same to someone else's (above) - this isn't particularly good behaviour for a client application.

There are specific locations near to which Iron ore tends to appear - after mining one it can take a long time for it to re-appear (I'd guess 30 mins but maybe there is a random factor as well). At about level 10 you can pick up quests in your home city to take messages to the other two home cities - this gets these cities on your transportation map - so you can easily meet your friends from other races.

When you go to these coordinates (and at other places) you will find iron mines - when you mine these you get pig iron. 'Pig iron' is the name for an ingot of very crude iron - it is the correct English term for it - so the game is, in that small respect, true to life.
