I didn't go through the entire thread. After reading Asterelle's post, it actually made me think on how much electricity I have consumed, correction, WASTED, on leaving a catshop open 24/7 for the past year.

So from this day on, I WILL NOT OPEN a catshop but instead use the AUCTION HOUSE. So what if the AH charges me coins, at least it is not REAL money I am wasting. At least I am not wasting electricity on a catshop.

I urge ALL the catshoppers to please utilize the AUCTION HOUSE. Look at it this way, save money on electricity = more money for GOLD :)

just dont forget to turn everything else off in ur house. including ur clocks/tvs/lamps/etc cuz those waste money tob:surrender

while ur at it u should take less then 5 mins in the shower so u can save on ur water bill. or just take a shower once a week. but even once a week is pushing it. also no need to waste ur gass bill on cooking food, go to mcdonalds or something and buy of the $ menu.

i can go on forever but i shall stop there, remember kids dont just stop at the cat shops if u want to save some real money! /end sarcasm

srsly, with all the stuff u do at home it wont matter much if u dont have a shop open 24/7. that kind of thinking is called "being cheap" with ur money.

Gosh you don't know the concept of "waste." And probably you don't know the concept of "being wise" with ur money or knowing the "real value" of "earned" money.

"Waste" = TV is on without watching, lamps when it is bright in daytime.

Cooking food is better than buying food from McDonalds. You know what you put in ur cooking, and you get to eat healthier too.

I don't know what you do at home, but maybe you were raised not to be aware of "waste" XD

Nice thoughts about saving energy, I won't say thats not a nice idea.

I can't imagine the Trade Chat if that was the main way to do trades. You would never see anything since there would be 1000 times more messages a second.

I can't see the AH working as the primary or secondary way either. Many reasons why not.

But I do like the whole idea of setting up shop and being able to log out/shut your PC down.

The only issue about that is what kind of pressure that will put on the server. That is a techie and progammer thing.

i don't know about you guys i run my computer 24/7 and my electric bill is about 50-100 bucks with 4 person living in the house. There is no way running your computer 24/7 would cost 800 bucks a year and my computer is a high end computer, with a lot more power drainage. So, i'm not paying 800 bucks a year, it's unlikely anybody else will.

ast, i think you got your numbers confuse :P

so let's look at it this way, i pay about 20 bucks of electric bill, say we can convert all that to pwi gold, that would give me about 10 mil? using catshop, i actually make about 10-20 mil a week, so honestly speaking, i'm getting my money worth doing catshop :P

Holy crappers....You pay 20 dollars a month for yuor Electric Bill. Could I get your provider.

Im running roughly 150 every 2 months and that is pretty good for a single family home. And I run my PC 24/7.

well, there is 4 people living in the house and we split the bill :P i mean short of my computer costing 100 bucks to run a month, it's much more economical for me to run pwi 24/7

That's just the thing: people don't care. Bring up a legitimate issue and people will respond with snappy comebacks like "well why don't we stop all people from exercising to reduce CO2 emissions", as so well demonstrated in this thread.

The problem is that while there are a lot of things people could do (forget PWI, there are a lot of things people use computers for that are for entertainment only and thus "expendable"), all of them require at least some personal sacrifice on the part of the individual, which is why they'd never do it.

Somewhat off-topic, buying would be MUCH more convenient if everything was listed in the AH ;) Too bad the interface leaves a lot to be desired.
There is no way running your computer 24/7 would cost 800 bucks a year and my computer is a high end computer, with a lot more power drainage.
He means the 397 computers hosting those cat shops combined cost $800 a week. All for the sake of increasing profit margin on imaginary items in an imaginary world.

what i do to solve this problem is i go into cat shop and then go to task manager and to processes then i end the client process (not task) ending the process shuts down ur client so fast it leaves you logged in to sell stuff while u can shut ur computer down. then wen i want to log back in i just force log

This is a good idea. Maybe now I can Catshop; I didn't bother before because leaving my laptop day in and out would kill it, the power bill, and everyone else.
Though if everyone did this the lag on the servers would be like death. So I also put in my vote for removing kitty shops from the game and confining people to AH, that's here I go for all my stuff anyway.

    397.

That's how many AFK catshops I just counted in Arch at the time of this posting in Sanctuary. 397 computers left on to idle without any direct use by people.

Let's assume each of these computers is consuming a modest 100W (the same as two light bulbs). That's 6,670 kWh every week (over $800 USD of electricty) going to these cat shops. That is just absurd.

Imagine if we could save that.

    - We would save enough energy to power 52 homes.
    - We would prevent 3.97 tons of weekly carbon dioxide emissions
    - We would have the equivalent carbon offset of planting 20,384 trees (enough trees to cover 34 acres of rainforest)

These numbers are for Sanctuary alone.

The benefit of eliminating cat shops is real. The question now is how to go about doing it.

If catshops were eliminated entirely tomorrow what would happen? People would complain at first for sure but I think they would adapt quickly to use the AH and trade chat.

Perhaps catshops could be made obsolete by a cash shop item that allows you to setup a stall without having your computer on.

I admit I don't have the answer but I see the problem.

    -Ast

yeah! people come up with all types of wild ideas now adays. so, me and the 296 left shops are going to open a paypal account and raise money from electricity bills to power some 54 homes of people we dont know and dont care about us.. ok. what is it ?2.5 dollars a week per person, **** i spend more on freakin cigs daily..
and what are yall doing all day in west arch?no mobs there, no bosses.... dont like west archo?stay in east. dont like lag?get a better pc/video card, but be careful not to spend an extra dollar a month on electricity.
and while we at it, how about try to calculate how many mmos should be closed to pay up the USA 13 trillion debt from the elecricity bills.

What's the ultimate difference between people being in catshop AFK and you reaching level 101 with all the costs and what it took to reach that ( you could mention time, but does that really make you less of a hypocrite ) ? It's both opportunism, yours seems to be less severe since you aren't in a catshop . I never catshop so I'm not standing up for any. But with your mindset, might as well use candles, don't use a vacuum cleaner. Cook your dinner on a home-made fire and wash your laundry by hand, and might as well farm'/hunt all your ingredients to eat since the supermarket uses electricity and what not to store it.

Might as well stop using computers and not play this game at all, think of all the things you could save. And you don't need to use precious electricity to talk to others online when you can travel there. *insert more*

As my calculations have shown, it is actualy far better for the environment if you were to leave your computer on and have a catshop afk, than if you were to breath. A person puts out about a ton of CO2 per year, while an afk shop, using the OPs numbers only puts out half a ton of CO2. As ou can see, stop breathing really is a much better solution to reduce CO2 emissions.

If one really only wants to offset the carbon footprint, one could breath only half of the day.
