The Real Cost of Catshopping

397.

That's how many AFK catshops I just counted in Arch at the time of this posting in Sanctuary. 397 computers left on to idle without any direct use by people.

Let's assume each of these computers is consuming a modest 100W (the same as two light bulbs). That's 6,670 kWh every week (over $800 USD of electricty) going to these cat shops. That is just absurd.

Imagine if we could save that.

- We would save enough energy to power 52 homes.
- We would prevent 3.97 tons of weekly carbon dioxide emissions
- We would have the equivalent carbon offset of planting 20,384 trees (enough trees to cover 34 acres of rainforest)

These numbers are for Sanctuary alone.

The benefit of eliminating cat shops is real. The question now is how to go about doing it.

If catshops were eliminated entirely tomorrow what would happen? People would complain at first for sure but I think they would adapt quickly to use the AH and trade chat.

Perhaps catshops could be made obsolete by a cash shop item that allows you to setup a stall without having your computer on.

I admit I don't have the answer but I see the problem.

I club baby trees for fun, and because I like to hear them scream. My carbon footprint alone is equal to half of China's. Meanwhile, I spend my idle time consuming the blood of infants and curb-stomping puppies. In fact, I am shamed if I do not do these things. I demand a cash shop item that will appease my pet guilt-trips.

Man, it'll be great when we've sucked this planet dry and can move on to colonize (and corrupt) the rest of the Universe, ruining underfoot the flawed creation that bore us in our ascent to godhood. And, hopefully, we'll even get to kill some 8-foot-tall smurfs in the process.
Do you work for an electric company???

I was thinking more along the lines of Greenpeace, or some other similarly "eco-conscious" organization that offsets the burden of being raised in an industrialized nation by creating layers of bureaucratic guilt to grant some semblance of purpose in an otherwise existentially barren life. Quickly, someone light the Glenn Beck & GOP-Fox News-Megaconglomerate Superfriends signal! Everyone knows the only way to fight guilt trips is with mindless crazy and outmoded, hypocritical corruption!

This is a call to *BAN* dihydrogen monoxide, otherwise know as the invisible, killer substance. This forum is probably not the place to post this protest, but I feel very strongly about this issue. For your information, dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO) is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO in its liquid form, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes tissue damage and contact with its gaseous form causes burns. DHMO use is widespread. For those who have become dependent on it, DHMO withdrawal means death. DHMO can be an environmental hazard: it is a major component of acid rain, contributes to the "greenhouse effect", leads to the erosion of natural landscapes and hastens the corrosion of most metals. Being so prevalent (quantities are found in every stream, lake and reservoir), DHMO contamination is at epidemic proportions. Despite the dangers, DHMO is often used as an industrial solvent, as a fire retardant, in nuclear power plants and (can you believe this) in certain food products. Companies dump waste dihydrogen monoxide into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. STOP THE HORROR NOW! The American government and the United Nations have refused to ban the production, distribution or use of this chemical due to its "economic importance." The navy and certain other military organizations are highly dependent on DHMO for various purposes. Military facilities receive tons of it through a sophisticated underground distribution network. It is also stored in large quantities for military emergencies. BUT IT'S NOT TOO LATE! You can help. Act *NOW* to prevent further contamination. Write your representatives. Start and sign petitions. Send e-mails. Inform your friends about the dangers. What you don't know *CAN* hurt you and every individual throughout the world

The dihydrogen monoxide hoax involves the use of an unfamiliar name for water, then listing some negative effects of water, then asking individuals to help control the seemingly dangerous substance. The hoax is designed to illustrate how the lack of scientific literacy and an exaggerated analysis can lead to misplaced fears.[1] "Dihydrogen monoxide", shortened to "DHMO", is a name for water that is consistent with chemical nomenclature, but that is almost never used.b:angryb:angry

After banning water, can we all agree to pay a double pension to the widow of the unknown soldier? We should also ban women's sufferage. Both petitions often get many, many, many signatures----proving petitions don't mean much. People will agree to anything.

It's banning something in the virtual world that has real world costs.

No I'm not an eco nut, I'm an engineer. I see the catshops in arch and see nothing but waste.

It took about 8 mins to count the cat shops in arch, its not like I spent all day there. I spend more time waiting in room 34 of the cube.

Now that I've worked the sarcasm out of my system - for now, anyway - this:
Perhaps catshops could be made obsolete by a cash shop item that allows you to setup a stall without having your computer on.

I want this. You see this, PWI? If you can't get a workable search function on your auction house, this will suffice, because it will allow me to abandon my undercut items amidst the unnavigable dross of catshops in Archosaur and go about my adventuring business, pretending all the while that someone may actually come across it and buy my items. Only I won't have to be there to suffer growing rage at still being dirt poor and unable to move and having to stare at a maddeningly ugly cat-mold-thing that magically holds and peddles items that never sell despite being 50% cheaper than every other item ever. Ever.

Plus, the additional servers needed to offset the lag of now ever-present cat shops will no doubt reverse what little gains people would garner from turning their computers off, so I still get to destroy the world one carbon atom at a time.

Methinks a more streamlined auction function would do far more good, though. And it serves the added benefit of reducing Archosaur lag. And I hate the way catshops look and demand the immediate attention of PWI's development team in ameliorating my malcontent. I'M A NON-PAYING CUSTOMER.

Yeah.. less than 1% of my wages is absurd.

As long as you are hooked on technology: you are part of the problem. You're simply pointing fingers at people like you and expecting them to be less like you. Go live off the land, start a powerless commune, etc. - Asking too much? Pointing the finger gets you?

ps: dhmo is water. C02 is a necessity for plants. Don't fall for the environmentalist propaganda, or the anti environment religious propaganda. There are far more worth causes regarding the environment than worrying about C02.

wait a minute there! you can't see the forest for the trees can you? All this time you've been ranting about how catshops are polluting the globe, but you don't seem to realize that the true enemy here is the internet! I mean, think about it... all those routers and servers being left on constantly. Just imagine the amount of energy it must be consuming! We must take action at once! Forget about trying to shut down a few servers here and there - we wouldn't be able to make a big enough impact. We must take more drastic measures. The only thing we can do is call upon Daniel Faraday and Eloise Hawking to deliver us back in time before DARPA began their research. Only then can this catastrophe be averted. Only then can we be at peace. Good luck my compatriot.. we have our work cut out for us.
