If you pvp at all you know combat is meh, bad damage, half decent survival, but only if you spec for 100% deflect. Trapper, evil stunbot - good for support if you are part of a premade perhaps. That leaves us with the weird choice - archer. Long neglected because of zero survival. However now that the damage of combat is gone with the piercing nerfs, archer is the only path that can hurt the enemy. And by "hurt" I mean "blow their brains out all over the floor".
Gear, see bottom of guide.
Paragon, pathfinder for ambush. No other reason.
Feats, the usual choices and then all the archer feats except the 2 lower leftmost columns.
Boon-wise, chòose everything offensive, keep repeating the mantra "I am not a defensive build, I am not a defensive build." Stay away from the damage on reflect boons, the manticore will bite you.
Stats, Arpen to as close as you can get to 100% defences ignored. Crit enough to get you to 80% with stillness of the forest, the rest into power. Defence, if you rock a shadowclad, stack hitpoints. If you don't have shadowclad, stack deflect. If you do have anything left, stack about 6 or 7k recovery, but don't sweat it if you can't, at-wills have no cooldowns and act says 55% of my damage comes from aimed shot and long shot, (the archer tree piercing feat - however, despite the changes, longshot is not a huge source of damage, the real reason archer is so lethal is our enormous base damage, meaning that even post mitigation, the damage that does get through is still enough to blast away big chunks of the enemy's HP).
Rotation. (No pressure long version instakill) Forest ghost, ambush, commanding, lonstriders, aimed shot, aimed shot... (Under pressure short version) Longstriders, disruptive, aimed shot, run away.
Class features, seekers and falcon.
Mainhand, aimed shot, offhand, falcon.
Tactics: Offence. sit waaaaaaay back off mid, wait until your teamates engage. Pick target, hardlock if you like, especially if anyone has illusion weapons, though hardlock is such a pain I don't bother usually, and pew-pew-pew. If you have a choice, always choose tanks - OPs, GFs, DCs, GWFs. Also, kill any other HRs as soon as you see them. A trapper will lock you down and kill you easily, another archer will blow you away. Don't be ashamed to use the pillars if your team can't hold the enemy's attention. If the node absolutely needs you to cap it, hop on and stealth up, try to keep out of the way. Remember, you have only one job - kill everything. All else is secondary.
Tactics: Defence. This is the bit that takes some getting used to. Basically it boils down to: run away. Don't look back, just run like mad. Don't get all "never back down" just run. Keep running. Run aaalllllllllll the way across the map. Feated as you are, you will sometimes outrun even the fastest gwf, don't worry. You're basically the Flash, with a bow. Also, forest ghost is your friend. Kite, kite, kite - especially when it comes to the "famous" GFs and GWFs, I've won a lot of matches which my team shouldn't have, simply because these guys get so enraged that they spend the whole match trying to kill me.
CWs, SWs. Anything with ranged control attacks are a huge problem for us. If your team are any good, best just to snipe at these 2 classes, then run away and find a node with better prey. If you have to engage these two, stealth up, get range, and hope their cooldowns aren't ready.
TRs. Basically, try to out-stealth them. Lol. With ambush, forest and shadowclad, we have pretty decent stealth capabilities. Longstriders and disruptive are very quick casts, and if manticore procs, boom they lose half their HP. Longshot feat, while pretty lousy, does add piercing damage which is neccesary considering TR stupid-overpowered deflect. Chip away, thornward is your friend.
Pros: It's hilarious. Those immortal OPs everyone complains about... Those immortal DCs, those tough-as nails GFs with their little cutesy shields... Nope, no longer immortal. Very surprised yes, immortal no.
Cons: Everybody hates you. The enemy team, your own team, everybody. I've been playing archer for a long time, averaging 10 to 20 kills a match with a high so far of 42. Lots of hate tells from butthurt tanks lol. However, the traditional pvp meta being "FIGHT ON THE HAMSTER NODE NOOBZ!!!!!" (which you can't do and be useful at the same time), you also get hated (at least till people realise OMG that HR just killed everyone on mid by himself in under 20 seconds) by your own team mates... Oh well. ☺ Also, you will get ganked. As I said before, I've had enemy teams so angry that they chase me me all over the shop, even though it means they lose the match because my team caps everything in the interim.
Is this build for you..? Hate to say it, but you probably need really good gear.
Try this test. Take off your pet, go to trade of blades. Sit by the vendors and pew-pew the furthest dummy you can hit. Watch your numbers. If you are hitting reliable, consecutive crits with aimed shot after the 3 encounter set up of between 400 and 500k and your arpen is around 90-100%... I think you are good to go.
Anyway, try it. Fun on a bun.
P.s. one thing I forgot to mention, race, my prime choice, human. Those 3 extra points help you max out the final top row normal feat 9% extra damage on atwills to targets not aiming at you. Kind of a must.
Final final final final mount bonuses and stats (updated for mod 13/14 gear):
Assassin's. Shepherds. Artificers. Guile. (movement is a lifesaver). Calvalrys' warning (not crazy useful but nice if you have time to set up to take down a really tanky target). (Note. If you don't have an orange mount, replace warning with another guile).
Example stats. (my stats lol). 99.9% arpen. 7k+ recovery. 44k power buffing to about 50k. (SH power boon) ~78% crit (crit-light gear unfortunately). 150%+ critsev. 15% deflect (if you don't have shadowclad, stack this though as your main defence stat). ~200k HP. (SH HP boon). Absolutely bugger all lifesteal. Whatever defence is on my gear. 5,000,000% run speed (approx). Happiness factor: high (unless pugs and/or wall to wall TRs). Ability to kill Saber: fair. Ability to make Saber insane: very high.
If your guild has them, and especially if they have the slayer boon, use a rnk2 GF slayer glyph, because in PvP, GFs are like a rash, or a TR ward..
New mod14 Gear choices.
*Manticore mane head. (Slayer glyph). *Puppet's plate chest + T.shadowclad. (Hag's Rags unfortunately don't stack with eyestalk wraps). *Eyestalk hands.(crit glyph). *Enduring boots. *Exhalted Pilgrim weapons + U. Vorpal (dread is good too, fey is ok). *Company dex neck. *Greater dex belt. *Bronzewood ring. *Offensive action ring. *Exquisite elemental gemmed pants/mod 13 paints shirt. *Dc sigil, giant eye, gwf sigil, cw sigil. (Or whatever you have - DC sigil kinda a must though). *Enchants, offence slots: dark/radiant13s and 1 high-ranked tenebrous if you like. Defence slots: radiant 13s - defence is a useless stat for HR, deflect we want to be low so shadowclad stealth procs reliably. If you use eclipse, silveries. *Pots/buffs, wildstorm elixir, watermelon sorbet, invoke buff, SH power food, enhanced crit potion, pocket-pet.
The ring, arms, and boots give a total 9% damage bonus if a) you've popped off a daily recntly and b) have full stamina. Both of which are ideal for us as we sneak initially without dodging, and always have a daily ready to go. Add on 9% if they are not targetting you, 50% from prey, 19% if you are behind them with seekers, and 20% with the right slayer glyph+boon... All told a possible 100%+ self-buff - these are the keys to one/two/three-shotting people. The manticore head while not deadly alone, may just finish someone off who we've almost killed before they get within striking distance, and the stats are ok I suppose.
Note: Manticore is broke, it's possible to multiproc on some long dailies. However, it is not broke on disrruptive, and only slightly broke on forest ghost, I've seen it proc twice once in a blue moon. So don't feel too bad about it. There is a mile of difference between manticore HR and manticore TR/OP. It also multiprocs mainly off damage reflect boons like frozen reflection and fey thistle, so don't take those boons.
Why pilgrim and not primal..? Because of our playstyle. Primal procs on heals and taking a hit. Considering the high HP we stack in pvp, and the massive healing depression, getting a big enough heal to proc the primal set is a problem. And of course, being a glass cannon, you don't really want to get hit, because usually that first hit leads to a second and a third and... back to the spawncamp lol. Pilgrim however procs as soon as you are in combat, giving you an immediate +5% damage boost, lasting for either a minute, or until your opponent is dead. ie. A no brainer. Some of the new ravenloft weapons are also just as good, and don't need to be exhalted.
And an added plus of mod 13/14 is that finally, at last thank god the illusion set is dead. No more confusing clouds of targets on mid.
Good info, I will remain a trapper to start with, standing I am above 65% CC, well over 100% RI, and 56% deflect. Hoping that helps. Certainly does the job now with all toons. GFs and OPs don't like the melt.
Thanks. I play as 15.7K HR trapper following the Sume build, and whilst it’s great for PVE and dungeon support it’s not great at PVP. So I look forward to trying your Archer build in 12b and annoying the hell out of everybody.
Yup. Its fun in its own way. U can choose to counter attack from forest ghost or runaway too. That makes the enemy guessing. Also for defensive/survivability play, u can try this too
Although its old, the playstyle is pretty much the same. Hit and run with a little guessing game. By replacing fox cunning with commanding shot in ur setup and good recovery, u will find urself weaving in and out of invulnebility frame while waiting for ur stealth to be up. Oh and hunterteamwork for some heals and ap after u execute someone is always nice too.
Yeah, I'd forgotten that little parcel that drops, cheers, it's not much slower than rapid, plus a debuff, so it's now on the list. Not convinced about fox though... That sounds... defensive ☺.
Will respecc again tonight, tweak a few boons in light of last week's experiences.
Also I forgot to mention mount bonuses.
Guile for duh, running away. Assassin's, because "I'm not a defensive build". Artificers persuasion for extra oomph on artipop. (btw. Main artifact probably wants to be D.C. sigil, because you really need all the stealth you can get). Jus' sayin'. Cavalrys warning, because cool. Shepherds because I like sheep.
Ok so respecced a few boons from defence to offence and added a ring of brutality (which is up quite a lot as either they're dead or I'm dead, meaning I'm out of combat pretty quick, resetting the ring) so power is up into the mid/high 40s. Took all the critsev/combat adv. boons too.
New record, 35 kills for 3 deaths in a long close match. And during another match, some hate mail from a TR, from eoa no less, who was actually on my team. Literally at the start of the match he says "kick koca, he sits on pillars and does no damage." By the end of the match he had 6 kills, I had 19 kills, and was top of the board with about 6000 points. We also won the match.
I pm'd him "really..? No damage..?" He pm'd me back saying "go play pve" and then put me on ignore lol.
I made a TR jealous - do I get a medal or something..?
Lol, I am not ashamed to use the pillar, esp. at the start, kill everyone on mid, hop down and help cap after. Mainly though I'm running like crazy between one of the ends and mid, whichever needs clearing. I'm not like married to the pillar or anything.
And I know you say 'melt' but I know full well that the current trapper version of melt is the 'ice-cream on a cold day' kinda melt. Sure it'll kill me, squish archer that I am, but try that on a decent tank and you'll be there forever, or at least a minute lol, if someone doesn't come along in the meantime and whomp you.
In our current mod (few more days 12B), melt is not difficult. If I can figure out how to attach a vid, I can show how a smart a$$ trash talking Pally melts. Adjusted his attitude yesterday morning. Had a rough start figuring what would best interrupt his rotation then I went on to triple capping and 'melt'. It was a fun 1v1.
Nice, pallys always need arrow-therapy lol. I can't be bothered to make a vid sry. If you see I'm on though, pm me, see if we can get into a match together ☺. There aren't any regular pvp HRs in my guild unfortunately, or at least none I know anyway.
Cheers Etelgrin, I'm combat for pve, great damage and survival, but just hanging on for the next mod, nothing I need from tong anymore.
Having a lot of laughs in PvP on my new archer build though. Don't worry I'm not giving up on the HR.☺
No idea what my toon is now.

see like i said in other posts with some disagreement the fighting off node pillar harassment meta is back that champions return if it is respecting healing depression as fixed now heals for next to nothing btw consider changing it for an additional mount bonus that works upon daily activation .. : D for even more lolz ... then cancel the dailies while you are at for increased up time pve style : D
use a scroll of movement from the winter event while you are at it too :P can never be too fast ...or use 2 movement mounts insignia's instead of champions return ..or the heal on crit insignia since you are pretty much always critting
you are probably getting in a lot of kill steals too further annoying people : D
Goddamn cryptic, thnx kalina, I'll think about other mount bonuses. Magistrates is HAMSTER, but eh, free damage and cavalry too for the buff I suppose. Movement wise I'm good, 70% boost most times lol. Disruptive and ghost's low AP cost means shepherds is up nearly all the time anyway.
Lol yup, I'm less of a bowman, more of an orbital strike. All ur killz r mine
Brother, I have 18% RI and, after applying Commanding Shot on the dummies every crit hit (which is practically every one) is over 1kk with Aimed Shot. The Long shot feat in the Archery path makes this possible. I have done some Archery PvP on PC before and love having everybody hate on me. They all usually hate HRs anyway. My power is 40k and crit % is 84% unbuffed, btw.
You really sure..? I mean I'm averaging about 250k and reach 1 million total in maybe a rotation and a couple of aimed shots. Also bear in mind dummies have no armor, whereas people in PvP have a lot.
Gotta try this, I'm at 17k full at the moment, should be interesting. Tried PVP a couple of times but on my HR trapper build I don't make any dent in those tanks... getting close is painful (at 80% RI/100% crit by the way)... I guess a vorpal enchant is required for this build (using dread now).
You could sacrifice 15 points and get 50% critsev from the combat tree, but you'd lose some of the archery buffs... worth a try if you have fey and don't want to buy another enchant, mind you perfect vorp would prolly be enough.
But tbh. one rotating tanks is kinda worth it lol.
Apologies. Each successive crit strike increased the crit damage from aimed strike until the hits were 1kk+ each time. I don't know if that was intended but I am sure. If I missed a crit though, the damage from aimed strike dropped to the 200k range.
I was messing about this morning buffing my shots. Easily ramped Aimed Shot yellow numbers to 150k-170k. Crits were double. I can only guess what they could have been if using a companion. Normally PvP so I don't mess with moving stuff around for the PvE side.
Can confirm that its very annoying and very good damage for ranged, having run up to the top is a good distraction for the other team. Play a gf/dc, can see this getting more popular tbh
Rex corona head, primal chest and arms, boots of the alpha. Brutality ring, orange offence ring from mod 10, power recovery. Orange trailblazer weapons. Power on all artifacts. Company cloak and dex belt. Mix of rnk 12 radiants, and brutals. 8K pow stronghold boon. Force potion. 40k + power. (Even more with brutality up). Basic pve setup in other words, almost no deflection, meh defence, bad lifesteal.
No idea what my toon is now.

Anyway, final thoughts on the build and HR pvp in general.
After a week in pvp, the scores were about 150 matches in soloQ, about 2500 kills, 1200 deaths, and 2000 assists, and lol, about 3 more wins than losses. Highest page reached, page 9 on the leader board, after a lucky streak of wins, average placement, somewhere between 10 and 20.
That alone tells you a lot. This build can't carry a match alone, if the pug teams are fairly equally matched, we win, because me killing everyone multiple times and sending them to spawn for x seconds allows my team to cap etc. However, towards the end of the week, because the actual pool of pvp players is small, I definitely got the feeling that any enemy player that knew me instantly started typing "kill koca first" in party chat at the beginning of the match. Because of the distance requirement for max damage, it's not that hard to predict where I'll be. Against an experienced team, with team-speak or whatever, my effectiveness was almost completely compromised, anyone with cc, together with a dps toon, I'm dead. The only upside, it would usually take either 2 coordinated toons to kill me quick, or a serious toon willing to chase me all over the map.
The Good.
* Utterly deadly single target burst. In every ACT log I ran, pretty much win or lose, I was the top dps, usually by a mile. Catch a nodeholder OP or DC on mid unawares and they went from full health to dead in less time than it took me to type this sentence. Any toon, however well built, caught unawares, (unless they had a fully charged barkshield) dead dead dead. No other class can match archer in this one respect. * Ridiculously fast. With aimed shot feated on mainhand, and the archer movement feat, plus guile and the pvp boon rapid deployment, 85% run speed nearly all the time. I have a legacy mount with 4000 movement, and dropping long shot for trapper column 1 top movement feat I could have reached 105% easily. If I'd used pathfinders action too, I'd have been out-running a purple mount.
The Bad.
* You cannot hold a node by yourself. You can only come off node, stealth up, and hope to take your target(s) down, or scare them away. * As usual, given HRs abysmal vulnerability to cc, a trapper HR or a good CW nearly always killed me 1 on 1 with zero effort. * No defence other than running. Tbh, running is actually quite effective, especially given our speed. Also, beartrap actually shines for this build, it has a low CD, is very quick to fire, and if you drop it in front of you as you run, and then run over it yourself, whoever is chasing you almost always gets trapped lol. * And this is by far the worst. Other players. Archer style brings out the worst in the enemy team. Not mentioning names but the big GFs, and GWFs - you know the ones I mean - who care about their kill/death ratios, just hate your HAMSTER guts. Fair enough, they are used to being near invulnerable as long as they are careful, a GF will shield up and pop wheel heal, a GWF will run away and do the same. Or pop the inevitable HAMSTER pay2win lion. With a good archer none of that HAMSTER works. A 2 second rotation from me at max distance and they are crippled. If I'm behind them, and they're fighting another toon, distracted, then they're dead. In short, though there are a lot of nice pvpers, I've been ganked, insulted, and corpse-jumped more often in the last week than I ever have in all the years I've been playing pvp.
And unfortunately, with the pvp crowd being so small these days, you meet these guys again, and again, and again.
So, are trapper and combat better alternatives..? Yes and no. No because with the current state of the HR with regard to pvp, there is absolutely no reason to want a combat or trapper HR on your team. There is nothing they can do that a TR can't do ten times better. Archer can do one thing that no other class or HR build can do, and that is burst down even the best tanks in seconds, without any other buffs but our own, or even a daily. It's just chopping wood, thud, thud, thud, move along. Yes because, if you don't have a jazzilion AD, trapper and combat work better at lower gear levels. Trapper particularly with the whole yawn-tastic permastun mechanic.
Basically atm., a decent pvp team doesn't really give a HAMSTER about trapper or combat HRs on the enemy team. However, they have to take an archer seriously. They cannot let them live. Which is in itself the biggest compliment I guess. Sorta, kinda lol.
All said and done, this has been my best week in PvP since mod 10 dropped. Not quite as good as mod 2, but then what could be.
