the kinder eggs and trading cards or shopping channel are not direct comparison
While I agree that my tongue in cheek shopping channel comment is not a direct comparison, I totally disagree that trading cards are not. They are exactly the same thing.
I am not against them making money. In fact if it was buy a key for x days/month/year for x amount, and gain extra loot (you now see lock boxes drop and can open them, without you do not get) I would be all for that. DDO has a potion of extra loot and higher loot if I rem, that's fine. It is the 1 key 1 box gamble I do not like and the fact you can spend
Sorry trading cards you are buying trading cards, sure they is some variation, but they are still cards. The only direct comparison would be if the boxes only contained say pets and mounts so people could collect them and trade them, and like not drops buy a pack buy-able in the cash shop.. However, so far lock boxes have not been like that.
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] I am not evil, I am just cursed.
Trading cards are basically the same. You get a set of junk cards and have a chance to get a rare card.. You keep buying the trading card packs to get those rare cards.

Yes reminds me of LOOT cards in World of Warcraft TCG
Yes reminds me of LOOT cards in World of Warcraft TCG
Exactly.
And I don't really see a problem with them, they give pwe & cryptic more money so they can keep developing the game. You can earn keys ingame by praying and selling stuff on the AH (you sell stuff on the AH, then sell the money for ZEN, buy the keys).
Everyone is concentrating on the negatives of lock boxes; I think we should all list the Pro's and Con's of them for YOU how YOU see them.
I'll start;
Pro's
1) best and fairest way to keep the rare items "rare"
2) good financial turn around for PWE (and Cryptic and the game)
3) completely optional as far as the game play is concerned
Con's
1) increase inventory micro-management
2) my luck in every other game sucks so I won't get anything :P
3) having a million and one QQ threads on the forum everyday because people don't like them (ie their luck sucks too)

The word you are thinking of should not be "luck" it should be "odds". The reason why PW or other mmo companies do not (in fact WILL NOT) divulge the odds is because the odds suck. If everyone knew the odds of actually getting something really good, very, very few would ever buy in.
I, for one, have not ever used/ bought a key for a lock box. If they make some sort of lock box key that you get through the invocation skill or they are can be bought with Astral diamonds I might try it once, but I won't ever spend zen or real money on them.

Yeah better chances of hitting lotto I would imagine

I obviously mean the REALLY rare items/mounts/companions the kind you may only see 1 or 2 of in the years you play the game, i've lost count of the amount of amazing mounts they had on wow that are everywhere now and they have lost all sense of being "rare" or special, thats what I meant. I'm sure there'll be similar alternatives with equally low odds of dropping from some dungeon bosses or whatever for those that prefer to kill the same boss thousands of times then chance a dice roll
What kind of items are in the boxes? I haven't played STO or CO, so I don't know from experience.
GW2 uses a lockbox system that didn't bother me very much because the boxes contained trivial items such as cosmetics and short term buffs for xp, magic find%, crafting xp etc. Every once in a while you would get nicer items like Disenchantment stones or another lockbox key. So because of the trivial nature of most of the contents, they didn't bother me much. You could even sell them on the auction house for a few coins.
If the boxes contain gear upgrades or permanent stat upgrades, then I will be annoyed. Like if there is a chance to get a +5 holy avenger sword of decapitation, then now we are talking straight up P2W. And the worst form of P2W because it inspires gambling and they control the odds. People will pay well for a chance at some neat cosmetics, but sadly people will pay handsomely for the chance to get a really nice gear upgrade without understanding or even caring that they are being manipulated by blatant money grabbing.
To me... it all depends on what is inside the box.

They haven't actually said what will be in them yet, I would be very surprised if it was anything game breaking like you mentioned there.
My assumption is they will have potions/crafting stuff/buffs/stuff for companions and probably 1 or 2 extremely rare mounts and cosmetic looking armour (If they put actual armour in I would assume it will be BoE and not BiS)
I hope it isn't gear that would be upsetting, I don't know about boxes either but cosmetic and other such stuff is cool. I will be just deleting or selling the boxes on vendor if you can. I still would like to just switch them off so I never see a lock box. Unless the boxes are very rarey dropped, then I might open one but if I get a hundred in 2 hours I will never touch one.

To me it will depend what you can get in the lock boxes. In GW2 the Black Lion chests were pretty much useless novelty items, unless it was a holiday event. What people ended up doing was stockpile the chests until a Live Event was occurring. At least in GW2, you had a chance of earning a key with an map completion and such.
If the lock boxes drop decent items like dyes, socket items, or even mounts, then I'll be more apt to cough up the cash for the keys. Otherwise I'll just sell them or let them sit in my bank.
That's pretty much the way I see it as well, I do think that before it's over with most governments will make PWE (because I just don't believe this is a Cryptic thing their hands are tied) start regulating such things more heavily. Honestly if they did their boxes the way SWTOR did theirs I feel there would be a lot less complaining at most you are going to drop 25 bucks to get a complete pack set instead of potentially several hundred dollars.
i think japan and korea have banned gambling boxes in video games.i'm not too familiar with cryptic lock boxes, and not sure if they are same as items that got banned.i know other pwe games sell lotto boxes in cash shop, pay 50 cents for chance win a cool mount or 5 other crappy items.
If they added a permanent unlock (permanent key...maybe call it a skeleton key) for lockboxes to the Hero Pack I'd pony up the $200 for that pack. That could be the tipping point for a lot of people.
Doing this would make their claim of over a $500 value a little more believable.

With star trek online, the lotto box keys are a lot more than 50 cents. Like $1.25 i think. And they refuse to give the odds of getting the desired items.

Ive been to more than 1 casino in my life, do you really think the odds for every slot machine are plastered up on the handle? do you really think everyone who ever bought a raffle ticket really gives a sh*t what their exact odds of winning are? does everyone playing video poker know what the odds are of making a straight flush? get real for a minute and stop making a non-issue into an issue, the odds arent whats important at all and theyre in no way as crazy as any state lottery (the odds of which are?? do the millions of people buying tickets daily really know or care??). bottom line: if you wanna pluck down a dollar you get a chance at winning some cool item and if you dont win it, youre probably gonna get your dollars worth anyway in other items! cant even say that about any other gambling im thinking of.
if you dont like the idea of it, dont buy a key and YES the price of this ridiculously awesome free to play game coming out for everybody is going to cost you one inventory slot being used up for a lockbox youll never use. whoopty doo, small price to pay for taking advantage of whats going to be the best game in 2013
If the lock boxes drop decent items like dyes, socket items, or even mounts...
Naw, I'm the kind of person who prefers to spend money on items with a direct price tag. Lockboxes are gambling items with a tiny chance to get something good, while the rest of the items are just junk. I spend money only on things I can buy directly.

You understand what a means right? Are your panties all bunched up? Generally I am against people calling people fanboys for expressing their opinion but I think the term rabid fanboy actually applies to you.

The bulk of the value is in the Astral Diamonds. The Exchange is limited to 25-500 AD per ZEN. So, if you act fast when the game launches you could conceivably get 1 ZEN for every 25 AD. That makes 750k AD = 30,000 ZEN or $300.
Speaking of AD, if the lockboxes have refined AD in them as a guarantee then I will likely open some. Or even Ancestral or Celestial coins.
Edit: The 25-500 AD/ZEN limit is not officially announced. I am sure I heard it in one of the videos but I can't find it to confirm. It is the limit currently set for Dilithium in the STO store and it would fit nicely in the claimed value of the HotN pack.

sure then im a fanboy and youre a l33t troll. nice to meet you. did all of my facts about gambling set you off how much a fan of PW i am? was it that i made too much sense and spoke coherently? arent you the one who posted last page that people have a better chance of winning the lottery than a lockbox item lol? actually the odds of these lockboxes grand prizes seem to be about 1 in 150, whereas the mega millions lottery is about 1 in 135 million. you were close though, just make the trolling less obvious.

Yes I did and put a at the end, it was a joke. But far be it for you to realize that. Maybe next time I will have to write (THIS IS A SARCASTIC JOKE) at the end so the mentally obtuse understand.
As for me being a troll you took the shot at me first pal.
you put the smiley at the beginning not the end lol as if i knew what that meant anyway. not every forum dwelling lurker who is a PW fanboy just waiting for the opportunity to lash out with his love of the company speaks fluent geekinese. yes try writing out "this is a sarcastic joke" though that would help in the future, i do speak english... somewhat =(
