SO after listening to the NOCS interview, it seems look boxes will be in. What I would like to see for this if it is the case that they sell permenant keys for each type of lock box. So you could buy a key that opens one lock box but disappears, but you can also buy a key that willl open all of those boxes and not disappear (or reusable). This would cost something like the equivilent of 10-15 keys maybe. What this does is give a income but not be too greedy. As they change box types from time to time, new permenant keys would be required for new boxes.
Maybe even have 1 fairly expensive lockbox permant skeleton key that will open any box ever, thinking probably equal to cost of 50+ standard key?

In Cyan Firefly's Economy video, it shows you can actually purchase lockbox keys by just logging in each day for 5 days and praying to get Celestial Coins which disappear if you don't login and pray in time. So if you decide to skip a couple of days of playing or forget to pray, then they disappear. The 7 day version of it is an Astral Diamond pack that supposedly gives a lot of them so its a debate about which one to get. So we don't need to pay $ to get lockbox keys or spend gold or Astral Diamonds through the Auction.
Yay another strike against my enthusiasm for this game.

You know what I hate the most about locked boxes? I hate that they are a pain in the HAMSTER. They drop on the ground and I have to pick them up and do loot maintenance on them. I want an option to make it so I never even see them as loot. Just a nice little check box and they are gone from my world forever.
TC, if they made permanent keys, the price would be in the hundreds of dollars.
If they added a permanent unlock (permanent key...maybe call it a skeleton key) for lockboxes to the Hero Pack I'd pony up the $200 for that pack. That could be the tipping point for a lot of people.

If they added such, it'd probably make the price $300, but I'm sure a lot of people would still go for it.

That option would turn down a LOT of the hate Cryptic gets about lock boxes.
I hate, hate the lockbox... they say (in STO and CO) that they don't effect the normal loot drops, normal loot still drops normally, no more or no less.. but I just can't truly believe that deep down..
Like keirkin said, I would love to have an option so I never have to see them drop at all, if they are truly on a separate loot system then it should be possible to turn them off and never have to look at or delete them out of my inventory again.. .

I'm hardly surprised. Lockboxes are a staple in PWE games, isn't it? It wouldn't bother me so much if I could sell them to vendors for a little extra gold. Oh well. Chalk it up to "Business as Usual."
Lockboxes are a good revenue for them, so they sure won't give us permament keys.
And I would do the same if I would be in their place. No one is forcing us to spend any money on them and people are doing it on their free will.
I don't care about the Lockboxes as they don't affect my standard drops.
I also never ever opened one in STO and never will. An that won't change for NW.
What would be nice and I fully agree with that, if we could switch them off. Or even better if I could sel them to a vendor for some ingame currency.

So much qq'ing after the 2nd post explained how you will be able to open them without paying any real money if you are patient. I'll take all your lockboxes then please.
Well you see I will not buy a 1 use key for a lock box, It is just not worth it with the odds for anything decent, least in the other games. I might be persuaded to buy a key that opens all that "sessions" boxes. I would think that those that pay $300 for key are pretty small. But if 1 person does 300 on keys, would 11 people buy a 30 one that's opens all? thats the economics. I do not know but i am reasonably sure more people would buy a 30 open all boxes, than spend 300 of single use keys.
I do like the idea of turning lock boxes off though:)though is starkos is right then it might not be so bad.
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] I am not evil, I am just cursed.
Surely the issue with lock boxes isn't the lock boxes themselves but your own self control? no one is forcing you to open them or even pick them up, if you accidently pick them up don't let them annoy you just destroy them.
I won't personally bother with lock boxes but I won't begrudge anyone that does, and without any kind of knowledge about what will be in the lock boxes I don't see anything to worry about.

I feel the "nobody forces" you argument, while correct, is not entirely true. Players might still feel pressure to buy them, yes no one forces you, but there is more subtle pressures associated, never understate sociological effects such as what am I missing, look I can get that really cool item etc. Having an item you can see on the cash shop and know whether it helps you what price it is and so on is no one forcing you, Lock boxes are clever and cynical in design to prey on the human psychology, also as technically gambling which is illegal is some countries, and you have to think about those underage (i do not think this is an 18+ rated game), something that in the NOCS interview they are aware off and keeping an eye on.

By that logic Kinder eggs and trading sticker packs are also gambling
I agree they are very tempting and are designed that way to MAKE people want to buy them that means they are doing there job. Lets not forget that you will be able to earn the currency in game to buy the keys so you can still partake in a few lock boxes if you wish without financial outlay, we don't even know what items will be in the lock boxes yet

Umm you can open 1 per 5 days if you log in every day for 5 days. In Champions Online I got 188 boxes in 6 hours. If the same drop rate holds true in NWO in 2 hours I could pick up enough chests to open for over a year worth of free opens. That is if I log in every day and never miss a day. While I love the game, it doesn't mean I will not speak up about the things I don't like in it.
Please give me a "make stupid lock boxes invisible" check box in the game options.

Home shopping shows make things tempting for people to buy the useless junk on them. Maybe we should outlaw the home shopping channel!!!
People need to learn to take responsibility for their actions, things tempt me every day but I resist the urge. Like every day one of my co-workers opens his mouth and I am tempted to put him in the hospital because he is such and idiot and can't take responsibilty for his own stupid mistakes, but I resist the urge. I can afford to buy a new Ford Mustang or trade in my Harley for a new one, but I resist the urge. Don't resist the urge and it is no ones fault but your own.
I think lockboxes are just gambling. And i don't gamble with Real-life money, so i will never, ever buy a key to gamble on the very small chance i might get something useful. I would like a option to turn lockboxes off, or selling them for a small profit to someone else (be they PC or NPC). Another option would be to give us an option to dismantle lock boxes for crafting ingredients.
the kinder eggs and trading cards or shopping channel are not direct comparison, in all these you see what or know what you are getting, you know you get a plastic toy in kinder eggs, you know you get trading cards in card packs, what you see on the shopping channel is what you get, whether they talk it up or not.
Lock boxes you can not see what you get, you will know what can drop yes but not the rarity. What can drop is a wide variety compared to say a kinder egg or trading cards. If each lock box only dropped a certain type of thing, then it might be ok but often and mostly what is inside you would not normally buy.
Knowing not to put someone in hospital, which you would then go to prison for for assault, is in no way the same as thinking, well its only $20 I will give it a go, then well maybe another $20 and then another and so on. I am sure some of them would not gamble normally, or spend cash on random items either. Once in game, it can feel unreal too, that you are not spending that real cash. Just because you can resist it does not mean all can, this is not designed to catch you, it IS designed to catch those who can not.
People need to learn that things are very rarely just black or just white, but lots of shades of grey.
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] I am not evil, I am just cursed.
I don't see how they differ too much from the trading cards and kinder egg analogy tbh, sure you may not know exactly what you are getting but you will know the "pool" of options that could be in the lock box, the value of which can vary drastically (maybe the kinder egg one is a bit weak on this )
it all boils down to individuals, in all walks of life people will spend beyond there means then blame the banks for giving them credit, take some responsibility and just say no set yourself a budget and STICK TO IT!
For me I will be buying the $60 founder pack and then allowing no more than 10 pounds a month just like a sub, that way if I do not wish to spend anything I don't have to and I can also save a for a few months for something special if I'd like to, plus I'll be supporting the game for as long as i'm playing it.
Exactly, with a set cooldown. That would be one way of doing it, most likely the lesser of MANY evils.
However lockboxes should not be in a game like this. In fact, it is almost a gambling issue, as it enforces gambling-like behaviour, when you aquire these boxes and need to use real money to aquire these keys.
That being said, everything in the game should be reachable by normal playstyle in my opinion. It's really just poor marketing the other way around, because it doesn't ensure the game to be a success, it forces players who wants to be the best to spend money on the game.
No matter the hate, lock boxes will be in. They consider it a source of income. Even if 9 of every 10 players say no, they make money.
The only way to stop it, will be government intervention, short of a massive protest... the way I see it.
That's pretty much the way I see it as well, I do think that before it's over with most governments will make PWE (because I just don't believe this is a Cryptic thing their hands are tied) start regulating such things more heavily. Honestly if they did their boxes the way SWTOR did theirs I feel there would be a lot less complaining at most you are going to drop 25 bucks to get a complete pack set instead of potentially several hundred dollars.
Yay another strike against my enthusiasm for this game.
you do understand this is actually a huge money maker for them and helps them support the game? Look at it like this....if this was P2P at $15 a month, population would suck big time and the game would prob not have a long life. Putting in microtransations like this lets more and more people play even though there are some that would never buy keys, they might buy other things. This money is what keeps supporting the game and is why STO is still alive today. Got to look at this Big Picture.

Yeah thats why there should be an option not to see them.

People have reportedly spent over $300 trying to get ships from lock boxes in STO. Why would they give that up for people qq'ing on a forum?
