This thread makes my sad. Not because of the fact that forum members got to each other, but rather due to the fact that all I see are edited posts. Seems very very heavy handed to me. Many posts were deleted, and many were simply partially edited by the moderators. When a thread gets ugly, the thread needs to be locked, but posts should only be deleted if they break an NDA, and never edited.
I know the devs feel they did the right thing, (they would not have done so otherwise), but it is not a good way to handle things. I am not going to PM you all to voice my concern; if you are going to be a part of the community, I will communicate openly with you.
This forum has always been cliquish, but are we now going to not only attack those who's opinion differs from our own, but censor them on top of it all. Certain members of this forum need to chill the F out. Period. You don't need to always be right, and you don't always need to get the last word in; it's childish behavior at its worst.
So far, I know of 6 people who won't come to this forum due to the behavior of several members. I am hoping an inexperienced group of devs, (who mean the best), don't push more of us away. I voted for one of you so that you could take care of spam, and gently remind people to be civil with one another; I did not however vote for you to enforce some draconic form of censorship upon the community, based on your own ideas of right and wrong. Who will edit and/or delete your posts when they cross the invisible line?
I rarely post, but for now at least, I will abstain from posting altogether. This is my last post. I will dwell, and laugh/eye roll/ponder thoughtfully the posts I read, but I'd prefer not to have to worry about whether my thoughts/feelings would be edited because they didn't conform to someones "standards".

I'm not going to respond again to the actions of Moderation in this thread, so please do not even respond to my reply here, instead PM a Moderator to discuss such. However, I am a bit confused as for everything that was a rule violation and was reported by users has been removed and handled, yet the topic of such is still continued to be brought up. All I will say on the posts that were totally removed was that they were either a direct reply to a removed post that, if left, would have undermined the whole Moderation that was done. The other posts were direct violations of the Rules and the ones partially edited were posts which were mixing both On Topic replies as well as discussing of either Moderator actions or the posts that were removed.
Why this continues to "need" to be discussed, if beyond my understanding as well is not in favor of the Rules and Policies of the Community Forums. So, on that note, I ask again, please everyone, refrain from this disallowed topic again and get back to the thread's topic.
The Locking of Threads will always be a last resort. If a thread can be cleansed first, it shall, which is exactly what we have been doing, yet some continue to bring up the Off Topic and Policy Violating events. This is what we consider a part of Trolling, whether intentionally or not.

They don't harm the account or anything but make clear what won't be tolerated.
Thinking again and reading my post, maybe you can start with me :-)
I just read this thread and man has it turned ugly. Why can't we try to have a healthy debate and seek to find common ground?
This thread has seen some in this community leave the forum. Can you imagine those who just signed up to this website and THIS was the first thread they read? It makes us look like an immature lot on both sides.
As for mods cleaning up the thread.. clearly some went over the line. If you're angry, why not take a deep breath, walk away for a bit, and then come back with the goal to seek ways to mutually agree. I've had to do it several times, and it really works. The mods clearly all want peace, and we as a community should highlight our best character as we build this community going forward.
Back to the OPs point. Here's what I feel, and it's only my opinion.
Death in today's MMOs is almost, if not completely, meaningless. Why does it even exist as a mechanic in WoW or EQ2 or WAR? There is no emotional response, no fear or anger, and no resulting immersion so what purpose does it serve other than to set us back a few seconds in our gameplay? The death mechanic in NW could simply be replaced with a 30 second countdown followed by the avatar resurrecting automatically in the same spot they died in. At least that way there wouldn't be a redundant illusion of mortality.
The meaning behind death penalties has been lost in many MMOs and replaced with a false sense of accessibility. There's the misguided idea that taking the sting out of death makes the game more suitable to the casual or new player. Accessibility and a healthy fear of death are not mutually exclusive though and, I believe, the two can co-exist in the same game if there's impetuous to design it that way.
We need death penalties to sting again in MMOs because they give us risk and emotions. Without risk we cannot possibly appreciate the fruits of our labors and without emotion we cannot bond with the environment and other players.
If players were scared to die in Neverwinter, if they were forced to work together to keep each other alive, to truly help each other avoid the sting of death, it would be a game over-brimming with conversation and camaraderie. Instead, in today's MMOs (and I'm including Champions Online in this because I've played it) we're left existing in a hollow shell of an online world in which no one cares if they live or die.
I'd like to see a moderate death penalty that doesn't block the casual gamer from advancing, yet gives them the desire that keeps them coming back for more and more opportunities to overcome challenges.
I welcome cordial debate, as I think there are several potential solutions I've read in this thread that actually just might bring a majority of us together.
That is one nice signature, grats on getting everything worked out with that!
Thank Zebular for his great work in making it! Already I'm getting raves! The signature words and images are mine, but fonts, layering, Titles/branding and coloring fill is all him! I'm especially impressed with his placement of the wizard over the "flattened" white fill background and Orange title words to simulate depth!
