Champions, we're happy to say that, this week, we're going to be removing restrictions on the costume tailor for brand-new players. A while back, we made a change where new players creating characters get a much smaller selection of costume pieces to choose from, in order to streamline character creation.
Since that change was released, we've been keeping a careful eye on this, and how it impacts player retention. After sifting through the data, it's clear that it's better to re-open the tailor, so a new player gets the full Champions experience of a nigh-limitless list of costume pieces.
This is just part of our recent focus on quality of life changes. We’ve taken a few weeks to prioritize the player experience of the core game, and find ways to make Champions a little more fun. You can think of this as a short-term Bug Stompathon, except instead of limiting ourselves to bugs, we've tackled design choices as well.
For new players, the opened tailor is going to take their breath away, and they're going to really see all the potential for costumes in Champions.
For veterans, we've already released the Resource cap increase, which is going to really help the game economy work more smoothly. This week's patch should also include a fix to the map's zoom: You've probably noticed that in larger maps like Millennium City, you can't zoom out all the way, making some missions hard to find.
One of my old bosses had something he called the "emotional to-do list" -- things that you're committed to doing, but you don't know when you'll be able to get to them. It feels good to say that, for some of these changes, the day finally came.
We’re proud of these changes, and we hope you enjoy them. Make sure to keep an eye on the forums and blogs for all the latest Champions news!
Yaay! I can finally stop ranting about the "streamlining"!
"Science teaches us to expect -- demand -- more than just eerie mysteries. What use is a puzzle that can't be solved? Patience is fine, but I'm not going to stop asking the universe to make sense!"
Fixed Map Zooms and The Death of Streamlined Creation? Ok, yeah this is good and while the second one and the cap changes do not specifically impact my gaming experience I still find myself actually quite happy they're happening because chipping away at these annoyances could lead to larger player retention and an overall improvement to the health of the game.
Ok, so having said that...I have 4 requests:
1. Put the block station back in the tutorial so newbies learn how to block. It is my strong opinion that this will improve the overall gaming experience(especially PUG related) for a very decent amount of the playerbase.
2. Put the Canada/Desert Crisis back at LvL 6 so new players(or those running missions on new alts) have 3 options and are not forced to slog through Westside on each and every toon. Now, don't get me wrong, I do like Westside but there are people here who have done it many many many many times and that kind of repetition can get old pretty quick. This change is back to when we had 3 "starter paths" and I believe it was a better setup overall.
3. Champions Online State of The Game 2015. It's about time to bring this thing back and, even if it's vague, actually have an official statement from Cryptic North that both shows the skeptics that they are communicating as well as the overall playerbase a ballpark guestimation of what is to come in 2015.
4. Delete the Until Field Report Subforums. They're not being used. I do not see them being used any time in the near future. All they do is put on display, front and center, some nice ideas that never happened(and some horrid ones too). Every once in a while someone bumps them so they look nice and current but then you look and it's nothing. The Age of Old Cryptic is in the past now and it is The Age of Cryptic North. There is no need to put the past on display. It is my opinion that this is just an eyesore causing negativity and damage. Please make it die.
Sure, there are powers, content, balance, neglected features, and a whole slew of other issues which could be mentioned in this thread but I thought I'd stick with 4 semi-simple(I think, could be wrong) and relevant requests when considering this year's activities thus far. Thanks for reading and thanks to CN for handling this stuff.
The one of these I can easily answer is 4: We, uh, can't. These forums (and those of most of our other games) would break, from a graphic design standpoint, if we deleted or added another forum in the index. This is due to how we originally set the forums up.

It was a silly, counter-intuitive idea in the first place. It shocks me people had to have it shown that it wasn't a good idea. Glad you got rid of it.
1. Put the block station back in the tutorial so newbies learn how to block. It is my strong opinion that this will improve the overall gaming experience(especially PUG related) for a very decent amount of the playerbase.
This, this, a thousand times this! It took me forever to learn the importance of blocking in this game and in the middle of a battle is NOT the time to half-assed explain it.
Thanks for these continued Quality of Life improvements.
This issue in particular seems to come up for new players that discovered CO through Steam, but I'm not sure. They get these "character creation failed" errors, which may be related to the now-lifted limitation.
If there's interest to smooth the new player entry process, I agree a simple (though not necessarily easy) is to unpin or remove old posts or forums. If character creation is the 1st impression, checking the forums for information is a very possible 2nd one, and seeing the latest info dated as 2012 really gives the wrong impression.
Hope to see more of these Quality of Life improvements.
I do have a suggestion related to the tailor streamlining - As we have started to have new costumes added the parts have generally been added to the bottom of the costume list in each category. This has resulted in the costume lists having a somewhat haphazard look. Is it possible to re-sort the costume part lists in each category? If so could this either be done automatically when new parts are added, or manually on a regular basis.
> change the first cape color, it updates the body color on screen while you decide on colors and updates the inside cape color when you finally click on a color.
>Toggle outside color of the cape and change the color
> Toggle inside color, now choosing colors continues to update the outside color of the cape on screen, until a color is clicked and it updates the inside of the cape as expected. On one of my tests of this it changed the outside of the cape and the body and legs color before finally only updating the inside of the cape.
Is this working as intended?
Is there supposed to be two "Hips Layer" items in the list?
If there is supposed to be two hips layers, merge and duplicate the lists entirely.
Cosmic 1 and Cosmic 2 probably look good together.

Champions, we're happy to say that, this week, we're going to be removing restrictions on the costume tailor for brand-new players.
WooHoo glad to see this happening its not a full on tailor reworking but at least the options will be there for every one and they can start to have proper fun with one of CO greatest features.
Thanks for these continued Quality of Life improvements.

The "Character Creation Failed" issue is most likely caused when the character's costume uses a piece they don't actually have access to such as an unpurchased C-Store Set. Currently, there is an issue somewhere that won't tell the player which pieces they do or don't have. While we're removing the restrictions, maybe you can make the tailor default to "Show owned costumes only"? That would be a simple cover up while you guys work to fix the real issue.
1. Put the block station back in the tutorial so newbies learn how to block. It is my strong opinion that this will improve the overall gaming experience(especially PUG related) for a very decent amount of the playerbase.
I.....yeah, we really do need this because as it stands 99% of new players don't even know blocking is in the game [nearly every time i decide to carry an XP alert on a level 40 char and it rolls over to Aoqulipth or whatever his name is spelled like, i tell the lowbies to block his attacks if he targets them, and 9 out of 10 times, if the lowbie is in new champs i get "There's blocking?" or "What do you mean block?" as the response]
In all things, a calm heart must prevail.

Yeah some things are broken... no I don't use/abuse them.. where would be the fun in that?
Yay for non silly tailor restrictions and less moronic hand-holding of people that should be too old for it.
The question is, what other stuff and things will come out in the lead up to CO's anniversary? The ability to blow up traffic jams perhaps?
The global cap changes do impact gold / lts members. This filthy silver can buy and sell expensive things on the AH, giving me more reason to stick around and play. I suspect it's true for others. Having more people to play with impacts my fun. Otherwise, there's no reason to bother with a MMO. Same can be said for a better tailor. If someone's first impression is that the tailor is crap, they won't make it far.

Sorry if I ramble on......
Also if I don't make any sense, sorry, I'm not that great these kind of things.
Wow, you get a response? I usually just get ignored as I watch Al's healh bar heal to full.
I agree that the block tutorial and lv 6 desert/canada crisis should be back. I also would like to have the Westside Dojo be returned as well since you added all the other spots back BUT that one. I miss my old RP hangout spot!
So, since the year 2015 seems to be the "Year of Bad Choice Reversal", is Champedia making a triumphant return?
Champedia was the Cryptic-hosted database of everyone's characters, right? No, that's a waaaaaay bigger undertaking, and I don't even know whether the old code would work well with our current version of Champs, let alone with the current website.
I strongly suspect, however, that lifting the new-player costume restrictions will also fix the bug that left you thinking you owned costume pieces you didn't. I seem to recall that only became a Thing after the "streamlining"; before that it would sometimes list the item, but if I tried to put it on nothing would happen.

These would be nice, especially number one. It is rather amazing how many new people aren't aware of blocking. I really like number 2 as well, though wish they would integrate the concept of hero types/styles into it for further role-playing/immersion possibilities.
"I tried to look at that page but saw only inane comments."
Hay TT, this is nice and all, but what about the hideout rooms, also what about the connection issues people have been reporting hum?, are they going to be fixed for this "Quality of the year"

What about when we could pull our character from the headshot server as a forum avatar?
Remember when we could enroll our twitter accounts with CO to display achievements and tweet from within the game?(With WoW doing this, a resurfacing of the feature would be great. What about the old MASHON service? Character blogs? Game mail integration with the site?

Pretty much anything that involves syncing with the ArcGames site isn't likely to happen. It'd be a one-off thing for Champions, and the platform team is gung-ho about adding features that can work for all games, instead of being specific to one particular game -- that's a better use of engineering and design time, because it can be used for all current games and all future games.
Fair enough, a lit of the pluginny bits were unnecessary anyway. Both Arc and Steam have a web browser so twitter functionality can be done through the web browser.
Champedia was eventually replaced with the PRIMUS database wiki, so that's awesome as we probably have more control over how our characters are displayed via the fanmade version.
I don't remember MashOn though, what was that?
On the tailor fix, glad to see CN are cool with fixing stuff.
Well, TT you going to answer my qeastion or am I have to sit here thinking Perfect World doesn't care about their customers?
The questions have been answered.
The hideout rooms were obviated by On Alert. I hardly think completing two extra rooms with no point other than maybe RPing in is a high priority for CN, not when there are still some major things that need handled.
The connectivity issues for the most part have to do with CogentCo, an ISP just upstream from Cryptic's sole server farm, and there's not a bloody thing they can do about it.
Why you want TT to take time out to answer those questions yet again is beyond me; it's not likely the answers will have changed any time recently.
"Science teaches us to expect -- demand -- more than just eerie mysteries. What use is a puzzle that can't be solved? Patience is fine, but I'm not going to stop asking the universe to make sense!"
Since that change was released, we've been keeping a careful eye on this, and how it impacts player retention.
I can tell you with full confidence that the thirty minutes I spent playing with my character's costume before ever even starting the tutorial the first time I played champions played a pretty big role in my retention as a player.
Conversly I can tell you that when other MMOs give me four faces and five hairstyles to pick from and no outfit customization, I make this face---> u3u
