PTS update FC.30.20120706a.1
This build is scheduled to hit PTS by 8:00pm PST

Greetings!

Tonight, we roll out the first three of the six all new five man Alert missions(with the ten-man Rampage Alert releasing shortly afterward). In these missions, players will go square off against new villains spawned from the "Create-a-Villain" contest.
Don't like what they look like, of what they stand for? Well, here's your chance to open up a can of whoop-**** on them:tongue:

New Alerts!
Players will now be able to go up against "Create-a_Villain" contest winning submissions: Ao'Qephoth, The Madstone and Rockjaw.
Each villain appears in each Alert type (Grab, Smash and Burst) and in both Millennium City and Vibora Bay Alert maps.


Night Avenger Powers:
  1. Sneak: Corrected an error in the description. This power buffs Melee Single Target damage and Ranged single target damage by half that amount while Sneaking. This is only a description change.
  2. Sneak: This power now cancels when you either take or deal damage.
  3. Sneak: This power may now be used in conjunction with travel powers.
  4. Night Warrior: This power now grants the Shadow Strike power. This power deals heavy damage from stealth at the cost of all of your remaining energy.
  5. Night Warrior: This power now grants 15% armor penetration at all ranks, and grants charge speed depending on what rank it is.
  6. Boomerang Throw: Microelectronic Controllers: This advantage causes the damage caused to additional targets to increase rather than decrease.
  7. Gas Pellet: Oversized Pellet Bag: This Advantage causes you to always throw the maximum number of pellets.
  8. Smoke Bomb Lunge: Sudden Strike: This Advantage causes your next single target melee critical to have 50% increased severity.

Nemesis:
  1. Nemesis: Darkness and Dual Blades Nemeses should no longer disappear during combat.

Known Issue
-The new Alert missions are a part of the current Alert rotation. We will work on a solution to only expose the Alert missions we want to test, and will include a fix in a build fist thing next week(Monday)

-Currently, the Alerts selector buttons are not working(due to the current build having reached tip code), but you can still access them from the "PvP and Instances" button below your minimap.

    Let's hope that among all those new shiny alerts, lots of bug fixes come in the next versions. :cool:

    Is this a new power or a new mechanic that applies to existing powers? If it's a new power, then that isn't really going to address things like concepts that use weapons or such. Why not have Nightwarrior apply a very large damage buff that has its own cooldown and requires you be stealthed in order to use it?

    If it is a new power, what type of damage will it deal? Will it be tintable? Will ranking up Nightwarrior also rank up this power? Will this power be able to take advantage points on its own? Will it have a cooldown or charge time?

    Though, might we consider making shadow strike a from-stealth buff to a single target attack?

    Greatly liking what you are doing with Night Warrior.

    I would like to suggest making sneak a toggle power (not a form, just a toggle) that one can turn on or off. As normal, taking damage or dealing damage will remove you from stealth, but as long as it is toggled on, you will re-enter stealth if you stop taking or doing damage automatically. If stealth takes energy to activate, as a toggle, maybe it can just automatically eat the energy it uses when it kicks in again, or alternatively, slightly reduces your energy gains while toggled on.

    Just a thought, to remove some of the tedium involved with manually using stealth again every time you are able to.

    These changes seem to address many of my major gripes.

    i will be sure to put these changes to the test.

    PVP is starving without rewards

    1. Please give us Daily PVP missions that reward Questionite.
    2. Please give us an exchange rate between Acclaim and Recognition so that PVP has access to all "On Alert" PVE rewards.

    On a serious note these changes look like a VERY good step in the right direction, overall, sneak it self might need a few buffs in the perception area so its hard to see in melee range, but all these changes look good, i find it a bit interesting though, Shadow Strike, is that a new exclusive power for night warrior? or is that a buff?

    He guys, just wanted to make you're aware of the following known issues (in case you haven't had a chance to read through my post again):

    Known Issue

    -Currently, the Alerts selector buttons are not working(due to the current build having reached tip code), but you can still access them from the "PvP and Instances" button below your minimap.
    Just look for Alerts containing the following bosses:
    Ao'Qephoth
    The Madstone
    Rockjaw

    @Biostem: I think the way it's worded "Now deactivates at dealing or receiving damage" means that it's only based on you. At least I can only hope that that is what it means.

    Hmm looks like I better get my caped crusader style alts to try some of this new shiny out and see just how it all goes down.
    Especially love the fact that you guys really gave both Night Warrior and sneak alot more love that they preferably well deserve. Plus I'm always open to trying out new alerts while i'm at it so what the hell lol

    The new Night Avenger stuff is really nice and all but...

    ...are you guys ever going to look at the Might/Heavy Weapons set again? Or are you just going to leave it as it is for the rest of eternity? Just wondering.

    I'm not really sure what you are getting from Nis's comment, but I took it as meaning "beat them up twice as much of you don't like them".

    The issue w/ the choice of who won the contest, I think, has more to do with the devs' tastes than with any thought of impropriety on their part...

    I agree with the toggle option. Makes it more of a condition requirement to return to stealth rather than constantly clicking at it to keep it up, like how Enrage was.

    Nice changes to Night Warrior, however the core problems still remain.

    Coming out of stealth and doing high damage is nice and all, but what you gonna do afterwards? How you gonna go back into stealth? Even if that is fixed then we have another problem which is that enemies recover health when you stealth up and get out of combat mode.

    Also does the new Shadow Strike power also work with other stealth powers like the advantage on Evasive Maneuvers, smoke bomb or even Shadowform?

    Does Shadow Strike do more damage the more energy you have or can you use it at any time with the same damage at any energy level?


    Edit: Also how can I switch to a custom avatar on these forums?

    And now, smart developers would add that 50% crit severity advantage to ALL lunges, because if they would leave it smoke-one-exclusive there would be ABSOLUTELY NO RESON to use any other lunge...
    And even more smart dev would make it a baseline for all lunges, because melles atm are horribly underpowered, and making that an advantage only punishes melles more by forcing them to waste 2 advantage points only to have decent but rare crit.

    Its Saturday and PTS is still "down for maintenance":mad:
    I guess there will be no testing this weekend...

    Seems this is going to be the case =S oh well... at least on Monday we will get a version of the PTS shard that actually has the new alerts selectable... as it is right now, they are random.

    Instead of a crit severity buff it should either be a crit chance buff or put you in a 3 second stealth with possibly an internal cooldown.

    I will have to agree with this. This increasingly makes the pounce advantage look pathetic considering the fact that it's now so easy to damage cap the boost from it is meh.

    How aboout instead of complaining about Smoke Bomb Lunge, you encourage the developers to make similar advantages for all other lunges, as what gunnerromantic suggested.

    Aye... though I gotta admit that I am sort of a fan of changing Smoke Bomb Lunge advantage... why?.

    Well my reasoning goes a bit more about aesthetics and purpose of the power. Its supposed to be a lunge when you are far away, nothing that you should be spamming on every cooldown as part of your damage rotation. It's more proper (In my opinion) to have something that gives utility, instead of straight up damage increase or defense increase.

    Devs please consider a throwing weapon energy builder.
    With ninja stars and now all the boomerang options, MA is moving into the ranged/melee hybrid territory.

    When your playing a stealth toon, you want to be able to stick and move. You may have a primary target that your building energy off but you may want to leave melee range for you primary target to use AOEs (especialy PBAOEs)

    With a ranged EB you can build energy at range while picking targets.
    With a melee EB you must be in melee range to build good energy and mostly focus on one target.

    I use the ranged PA EB on my melee laser sword pa toon and that gives me more flexibility. I would like to have that same flexibility in MA.

    Thats wrong .. Melee EBs give energy on range, they only don't do damage :wink:

    There is nothing incorrect about the statement that you quoted.
    I said "good" energy. To be clear i was referring to the fact that you build substantially less energy at range with a melee energy builder.

    For example, one of my lv 30 melee toons on live gets 16 energy per tick on his eb at range and 21 energy per tick in melee.
    If your build has any kind of energy problems this will exaggerate them substantially. This is why i want a ranged eb, for more consistent performance.

    Melee ebs are only better if you spend most of your energy building time in melee range this may not be the case now that MA has so many ranged aoes.

    In terms of stealth, melee EBs have huge advantage where you can build energy while in stealth because you aren't dealing or taking damage, of course its not a lot of energy, regardless I'm still for the ranged MA EBs like a shuriken EB, because it sounds fun. :P

    That's actually counter-intuitive to the themes of stealth. A person shouldn't be able to taunt without at least lowering his stealth value. It's in a way announcing you are "somewhere" in the room and so someone is looking for you.

    Then what happens mechanically is you build threat/aggro attacking people to the source of the taunt, so there's a paradox statement that occurs between the two logic statements being expressed to the AI critters. (It's not damaging so stealth doesn't drop yet there for I don't "see" anything, yet I'm attracted to the source of the taunt.)

    So..is the PTS up so we can test that scenario?

    Expected Result: Taunt classified as applying 0 irresistible damage so is considered valid for the purposes dropping stealth.

    You don't see the connection between boomerangs and MA?

    Night Warrior and boomerangs are in different frameworks (and im not convinced that they should be) but they are clearly designed to thematically work together and will be introduced together in the form of Nighthawk. Further more, boomerangs aren't "gadgets" any more than ninja stars are and as powers, they are more synergistic with the MA framework than the Gadgeteering which is based around high tech devices that rely on tech/engineering and not skill of the user.

    There isn't even a passive in Gadgeteering that would buff boomerangs. :/

    Im not sure we need to take it that far.
    If your attacking from sneak, then your probably going to use Shadow Strike, so it doesn't matter how much energy you would have.

    If for some reason you want to alpha strike from sneak with a power other than shadow strike (and probably do less damage in the process) i don't see a balance problem with that.

    I think we only need to be practical about EBs and not overly logical, the very concept of EBs is illogical but a practical game play mechanic.

    You don't see the connection between boomerangs and MA?

    Night Warrior and boomerangs are in different frameworks (and im not convinced that they should be) but they are clearly designed to thematically work together and will be introduced together in the form of Nighthawk. Further more, boomerangs aren't "gadgets" any more than ninja stars are and as powers, they are more synergistic with the MA framework than the Gadgeteering which is based around high tech devices that rely on tech/engineering and not skill of the user.

    There isn't even a passive in Gadgeteering that would buff boomerangs. :/

    There isn't a passive that buffs any of the Gadgeteering powers in Gadgeteering.

    Nighthawk serves as an introduction to a Gadgeteering/Martial Arts hybrid archetype. Not another excluse MA character. They are designed to work together to promote cross-framework selections as viable options.

    The Advantage for the boomerang powers is a targeting system. And the Ninja Stars are in the Martial Arts framework already so again, I'm not understanding where you are coming from in these statements.

    Im not sure we need to take it that far.
    If your attacking from sneak, then your probably going to use Shadow Strike, so it doesn't matter how much energy you would have.

    If for some reason you want to alpha strike from sneak with a power other than shadow strike (and probably do less damage in the process) i don't see a balance problem with that.

    I think we only need to be practical about EBs and not overly logical, the very concept of EBs is illogical but a practical game play mechanic.

    I'm not understanding where you are coming from in these statements.

    I feel like Ive explained things fairly clearly but maybe not. Your own response is fairly vague and doesn't give me much to work with. Your tone seems to disagree with me, but what you said doesn't really do any thing to call the merits of a ranged thrown weapon eb into question.

    Maybe you can take a more clear stance on the issue so that we can come to some kind of understanding.

    EX:
    I don't think they should add a thrown weapon eb because.......

    Right, I never disagreed with having a ranged throwing weapon-based EB. I just either disagreed or failed to understand the arguments made to support it.

    Consider what is being asked. The creation of a throwing weapon EB solely on the reasoning of the addition of two auxiliary powers in different thematic frameworks.

    Two new powers that won't be using the same FX/Weapon Models as the Shuriken Powers in MA isn't enough to consider the creation of either a boomerang or shuriken EB.

    A throwing weapon framework itself then yeah, or if they decide to make like 3 more powers with either Boomerangs or Shurikens then sure. That means they were considering making a full Archetype that was a Throwing Weapon specialist.

    It's very possible to create an EB that is a hybrid melee/ranged in that one sacrifices the taunt for ranged attacks. It doesn't solve the dilemma of whether it should be a Boomerang or Shuriken, but it's always a possiblity.

    Well my reasoning goes a bit more about aesthetics and purpose of the power. Its supposed to be a lunge when you are far away, nothing that you should be spamming on every cooldown as part of your damage rotation. It's more proper (In my opinion) to have something that gives utility, instead of straight up damage increase or defense increase.

    The problem is that with the standard lunge cooldown of 3 seconds (and less with any type of +Recharge, especially at level 40), is that people do spam it because it's there. There's a reason why people use lunges as their block-breaker/aggro snapping power.

    Now, if Lunges had a much larger recharge time (especially in the case of this one, as its advantage is ABSURDLY POWERFUL), like say 10 seconds or so (and if you get the advantage of Smoke Bomb Lunge and turn it into say, 20 or more), then it becomes a tactical power.

    But with the cooldown of next to nothing? It's just something else to spam.

    Then we're basically in agreement then. With that said, feel free to ignore the rest of this post.



    It seems that where we difer is that you seem to be thinking in terms of frameworks while i am thinking in terms of builds/theme.
    The creation of a throwing weapon EB solely on the reasoning of the addition of two auxiliary powers in different thematic frameworks.
    boomerangs and Shurikens are in different frame works but are subjectively similar enough to exist in the same build without breaking theme.
    This build:
    Nighthawk serves as an introduction to a Gadgeteering/Martial Arts hybrid archetype.
    Is the one i have in mind, and considering this:
    They are designed to work together to promote cross-framework selections as viable options.
    .
    Adding a thrown wepon EB would expand on these "cross framework selections"
    With Telekinesis i can choose to be a range/melee hybrid with emphisis on eitther depending on what kind of EB i pick.
    In PA i can do the same.

    I would like to be able to do this with a "Gadgeteering/Martial Arts hybrid" as well.

    I still feel that smoke bomb lunge should become a version of evasive maneuvers, but for getting closer to your target. Have it place you in stealth, which in turn would allow Nightwarrior to provide you with the damage buff...
