Hmm, do you happen to know any native Linux games that you know use Vulkan that I could use as a test run? Although if it's not supposed to be using that anyway, then perhaps it's not that! (Any idea what would be the equivalent of that command that did use Vulkan, in case that fixes it?)
Thanks for the comments! That was me :-D As I mentioned there, I found out how to fix the DirectX thing from ProtonDB - set launch options (right-click Star Trek Online in the Library menu and select "Properties") to SDL_VIDEO_MINIMIZE_ON_FOCUS_LOSS=0 PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%. But it's still not working. Doesn't…
Thanks a lot! This posting? https://www.reddit.com/r/sto/comments/wjgh3a/coming_back_to_the_game_after_aprox_6_months/ Yes, although theirs is glitchy, it sounds as if it isn't having this particular bug, or it wouldn't even start. That makes sense. Last time I saw this error message, it was because Wine was trying to run…
Thanks very much for the tip! Unfortunately, when I tested it with Lighting 2.0 switched off, it still crashed. So it remains a mystery. Are other people managing to run STO on Linux at the moment? If so, what version of Wine?
Update: Turning the graphics right down to minimum got it to work with some of the previously stuck characters, but when they walked into certain areas (the holodeck battle simulation in the KDF tutorial, and the large central area of Delta Quadrant Command) it crashed again, and they're now inaccessible again as before…
Have done, no response. (Am reluctant to post on random Linux boards I'm not familiar with as a lot of Linux boards are incredibly snobbish and will just give you a bunch of insults for not knowing the answer already and no answers. Strange attitude for a tech support board to take, since if you knew the answer already you…
Would like to join in with this. Can anyone recommend a good, easy recording program for someone who's never used one before? Especially, if anyone knows, one for Linux? Can people who aren't the authors add missions to the list? I'd like to nominate the "Time the Enemy" trilogy by Havraha, and "Talking to Old Soldiers" by…
Yes, if it was me I'd even have the Starkiller Base moving around as soon as it was ready to be mobile, and even the ships servicing it wouldn't be told its latest location until they were ready to set off. Apart from them, where it was at any time and where it was going next would be known only to the high-ups making the…
I have a kind of headcanon that other people DO think Starfleeters are unfairly good-looking and athletic, and mutter that they're a privileged elite, if not actually Augments. Actually it's because they're among the few people on 25th century Earth who actually do much physical work. (Also it's amazing what a tailored…

Hey, I never played Shevet's second mission, definitely going on my list of ones to play if I get the time before the Foundry closes. That's a great story.
I remember the name now, I think - "Cloaked Intentions". If that's still up, I would love it if somebody could nab that. (I'd do it myself, but STO is still reinstalling a little bit at a time over my very slow connection so I doubt if I'll have it working before the weekend at the very least.)
Surak and Kahless. Sarek was Mr Spock's dad - easy to get the two mixed up, I do it myself. But that's not a bad idea. You could let them spread out into a bit more detail and variety than you can in the main series where they can only be represented by a few keywords and colour schemes to make sure they stand out from the…
The point is there aren't any other metals that end in um without ending in ium. Unless you can think of one. Incidentally, there are original Latin words for the metals you mentioned, which are the sources of their chemical abbreviations, and four of those DO have ums that aren't iums - Aurum, Argentum, Cuprum, Stibium…
Fond memories of "Time the Enemy" (I never did play "Time the Ally" and "Time the Traitor", my Klingon captain not having reached the required level at the time). Tactical Officer: "Captain, I'd like to tell you something I've never told anyone before." "What's that?" "I LOVE blowing stuff up." Can anyone put a name to a…
@kalknight that's a brilliant idea! Heck, it would probably mean we got new story missions more often overall, given the painfully small trickle of them Cryptic can usually manage. And even if we're underestimating how hard it would be to make a new Foundry, your plan would still mean more story missions and we'd save some…
I also found this old thread that I'd forgotten about: Roleplay Fleet Map and Directory There are probably other RP fleets besides those, but that's some to start with. It's a few years old, but some of those fleets will surely still be around, the RP fleets tend to stick around. Firefly Fleet is the one I'm in, by the…
The section for fleet advertising is here: https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline#/categories/fleet-recruitment RP fleets are quite a small minority in this game, but they're out there, scroll down a few pages and you'll find some eventually. This section is mre for RPin in the forum itself, which is also fine.…
Yes. In DS9 Section 31's plans are often not just morally terrible but also just terrible. Again, this is what happens when your project is so secret that only a few people are allowed to know what's going on and they all just start encouraging each other with no-one to tell them "That just doesn't even make sense, you've…
azrael605: If you're referring to "Dagger of the Mind" that didn't really work very well. I mean it worked, but it was a main-force kind of effect, you couldn't use it to force somebody to do things that were very much against what they would otherwise be doing and still leave them functional enough to be a good agent.…
Only discovered this thread a few days ago. Made my day to see there was a new instalment again. Just popping up to say I love your characters (I don't usually enjoy reading about Klingons but Surella is great), I love your details and I love USS Amphicyon's name! I'm sure Surella thinks it's appropriate... If she comes…
Ah, I see, good explanation, thanks. Yes, patches that end up being about the same size as the "received" figure are normal for me, too, IO don't know why it's different for Salvation4.
For me, it's always much the same amount Received as Patched, perhaps a few megabytes less. What does that mean, anyway, "received" as opposed to "patched"? I've always wondered. How can it patch more than it's received? I never usually used to get patches this size myself, either, excepr when it was a new season. I've…
I thought the mirror universe was a divergent universe. Didn't they say that it was what happened when Zefram Cochrane panicked when he met his first Vulcan and shot him?
Sorry, Garaks, I can't understand your instructions. Please explain? I got as far as trying safe mode in the launcher options, but can't see any mention of 32-bit, either in safe mode or in ordinary mode. As for options in the game itself, no point talking abotu that yet because thus far I can't get that far! Besides, I'm…
