  • Hah, no. One or two Harpoons puts everything smaller than a carrier at the bottom of the sea. Only variable there is how many you'd need to actually fire at the target in order to overwhelm the CIWS. Heavily-armored battleships were obsolete before WW2 was over. Naval combat and tank-versus-tank combat share some…
  • Outsourcing exploration to the Foundry authors would be neat, but sort of a niche thing; my favorite foundry missions are the longer ones, and several of the ones I really enjoyed turned into entire series. Let's suppose for the sake of an example that they put the old exploration clusters back in, but now the 'hooks' you…
  • Either way, it's story content and it's not going to be random/procedurally-generated/whatever. Somebody sits and builds it. It's designed content. People want that, but they don't want it - at the same time.
  • Somebody at Cryptic has to actually produce this content. There's no magic space-hamster that's going to conjure a mission out of thin air just for you to play. Within the confines of a video game made by some dudes sitting in an office somewhere, there's really no room for "discovery" of any kind.
  • You're not talking about exploration, not really. Pursuant to another post a few pages back, people are really asking for more fully fleshed-out story content. Exploration is only the means by which you would access it - the difference is that these missions wouldn't get slotted in to the main story progression line and…
  • Back about three years ago I got a Galaxy Retrofit for free at lvl 50. Still not really sure how since I didn't actually buy it, but I did. Granted, Gal Retrofit sucks, but I got one.
  • Right now, fun is: -leveling a brand-new toon with a friend who hasn't played in about a year -doing Foundries with my main -playing through the new story content I got a lot of mileage out of the Delta Volanis Cluster with my lvl 50 Engineer before they ripped out the exploration clusters. Other than that I was playing…
  • I said right off the top that most of the changes were cool. I guess I'm a complainer because they took an action that required literally two mouse clicks and turned it into this mess.
  • +1 Open-world PVP is not the answer to the statement "people feel too comfortable" or whatever. In EVE, you only fly what you can afford to lose, because if you are a frequent PVPer (or even go near dangerous areas with any frequency), you're going to get your ship blown out from under you. Let's see how excited everybody…
  • It's funny that ultimately the reason for all the bizzaroworld protocols and complete disregard of effective and efficient organization in Starfleet comes down to it being a TV show, not because the writing staff put any thought into what the actual organization of a spacecraft would be like. Put Sisko in charge of 700…
  • Yeah if there's one thing this game needs it's gatecamps. I miss the days of ganking failfit Caldari Navy Ravens in a highsec-lowsec-highsec pipe with some buds. "Why him?" "It was his turn."
  • So basically it makes no sense whatsoever. Roger.
  • Which is hilarious because you don't actually have a choice in the matter in the real world. You're promoted, move to your next assignment. Officers automatically come up for promotion every X many years, depending on your branch. You either get promoted or you don't. If they pass on you three consecutive times, you're…
  • Nyet, comrade! The AK47 is ancient and has been surpassed completely by nearly every weapon designed since then. It's still kind of nice if you're a peasant with no training whatsoever, but no professional is ever going to reach for an AK first. Plus yes, spray-and-pray results in a lot of misses, and is the role of the…
  • Exactly this. Don't try to graft real-world naval tactics and organization onto a sci-fi TV series whose writers never paid that stuff any mind.
  • To answer the question in the thread title, "why bother writing new missions for the Foundry," it's because a handful of Foundry authors are the only ones putting any worthwhile content into this game anymore. Pride yourselves on the fact that you're writing better stories than the people who are paid to write stories. But…
  • I try to do at least one from the Foundry every time I'm logged in - because that's where all the interesting content is. Adventure zones are neat if you like smashing yourself in the face with a brick. Problem is, I've been a Foundry fan for so long that it's getting harder and harder to find good missions. Played quite a…
  • The point is mostly that all that PVP stuff is player-generated action. You don't have to queue for an STF or load a mission or any of that. Some dudes show up on your front door and you go gank them. No developer-written story content required.
  • The game the OP is looking for is called EVE Online. Without launching into a long rambling post about why Eve works the way it does, I'll just say that the entire game is PVP in some form or another. That's how you affect the world around you - trading, mining, manufacturing, actual combat. STO is a game in a closed…
  • I have a USS Heermann kicking around somewhere, which was another participant in that same engagement. Heermann fired a torpedo spread that bracketed the Yamato and forced it to break away to evade, keeping it out of the fight for several minutes. Heermann was the only survivor of the destroyer screen. My other notable…
  • The first part of that sounds like the modern Combat Systems Officer post, no? Seems like the addition of personal weapons to that officer's responsibility would be a bit much though.
  • The problem I have with all these refits and retrofits (being the most casual Trek fan of all of you, probably) is that every time you promote one of these low-tier ships up to T5 rank you demean/cheapen/reduce to irrelevance the ships that are already there. If anybody can fly anything at top tier and fit all the latest…
  • Queued for the first time ever - 560something out of over 6k waiting to get in. Guess I'll check in next week. Time to go play games that have higher server pops and no patch-day foulups in the meantime.
  • They've got top men working on it right now. TOP. Men.
  • I keep my two torpedoes visible on my hotbar so I can see when they're loaded. All other weapons are set to autofire upon installation and removed from the hotbar.
