Yes... Totally... It's as free of a "F2P" online game as I've ever seen. It's fun (*still fun). If they hate it then... oh well. Just uninstall it. I'd sooner recommend this game than a $60 retail game without a demo because if they hate that then I might feel guilty that they wasted their money.

That indeed seems to be the culprit. The error log repeats "Checksum verification failed after download" every time I run the patcher. Jeebus... All games go through this TRIBBLE. At least the servers are up for now. DDO went down for almost a week and they compensated the players with a paltry sum of points that took another two weeks to deliver. If I enjoy a game then I don't see any reason not to support it with $$$.
