Only to play the story content and that they don't need to pay anything. Don't buy off the c store even in the sales and don't buy LTS/gold. Enjoy what you get for free.
Don't bother with the grinds they won't stop you playing the game and really 1 character per faction x 6 reputations with 7 schools of r&d and no way to earn the resources we're talking about to get the gear off others. It will take you so long to get the levels now that you wonder if the game will end before you get it to really benefit from it. The implementation of cotnent now is such that it's bery atl unfriendly. I used to be able to cope with 4-8 characters now I'm wondering what's the point? That means no need to buy 2/3 factional stuff so it only hurts Cryptic.
Systems like pvp and accolades are just not worth trying now. Balance left the game so long ago pvp is just silly so why go for the uber gear? In elites now you only need to do them to get the best gear anyway so just don't bother.
Cryptic's handling of the game in terms of managing Q&A especially. They never seem to listen to the community even when we tell them 'this will happen' then when it affects their profits they rush to fix it when stuff in the game has been around since the start and are now punishing people for their failings. It does not suprise me that some apparently have been caught out that are really innocent. Cryptic probably just added criteria that they felt caught the 'exploiters' but didn't take in to account how it would really work and low and behold people who probably just talked in TD zone chat got penalised for all we know.
I'd say more but I think the message is clear in this thread. The general vibe in the community is people are walking away from the game in their droves and STO is far from prospering with DR being the nail in the coffin for many people.
For me, it's the investment I've already made, and that fact that I'm already involved. I've had time to work through the changes. Someone (a friend) starting afresh now (especially as a F2P) would have it ridiculously hard. Can you imagine how long it would take a casual player to level all the way up to #60, acquire enough Dilithium to buy anything, and acquire enough of the various marks to advance the Rep System?
...and that would be on one character. The games' current setup is, quite frankly, insulting. I wouldn't want to insult my friends by directing them here.
I would not recommend STO to my dog or my cat, even though they are both star trek fans.
The problem with Delta Rising is that enemies have too much shield and hitpoints.
More than 5 seconds to kill one enemy ship is too much time.
I want to kill in less than 5 seconds (with skill of course) because skillful, challenging enemies are what I want.
Enemies should have sophiscated AI, not the boring AI we have now, but not so much AI that more than 5 seconds is required to kill (with skill of course). More than 5 second kill is boring and wastes my valuable time which could be spent farming dilthium. 3-5 second kill is exciting and fun.
Neelix, photonic doctor, 7 of 9, Kim, Tuvok, ....
Who cares about the story? Who do they think we are? star trek fans?
I just want my dilithium reward.
The dilthium reward nerf is terrible. Now, more than one whole hour is required to reach the daily refine limit. Why do they force us to play STO more than one hour when they know we hate playing this game? Players would be much happier if Cryptic simply put rewards into our inventory without forcing us to play this painfully boring game.
This weekend is 1.5-2x dilthium reward. Ha! Pathetic attempt by Cryptic to placate the players.
They ought to be embarrassed. Currently, doing Hourly rep projects which award 510 dilthium per hour (this weekend only) and costs 15 marks. 15 marks!! Robbery! Has Cryptic no shame?

I love the game and would recommend it to friends, if i had any ST fans.

"It's too late for me, but you still have a chance! Go, go while you can!"
Giggles aside, it is probably the main reason most critics stick around. They don't want to waste their investment, be it money, time or the IP. It makes sense really.
I'd have to disagree on the new player point though. It's still quite easy to sail through most of the content on normal and get to level 50 in a short amount of time. I've already seen level 60 toons all over the place and the expansion has barely been out over a week.
Considering most F2P games outright bar you from progressing to level cap, and of course bar you from significant portions of content, I'd hardly call it 'insulting'.
I have enjoyed this game for several years and do not regret my LTS.
I like space combat and the ground combat has become increasingly fun to me over the last several updates (I enjoyed the Dyson ground zone and the more storytelling-foucsed Kobali zone as well).
I'm in a great high-level fleet that is friendly, active, and works together.
I'm always surprised when I log on to the forums and am told I am supposed to hate Cryptic and hate the game and ragequit. I play the new content, think, "Cool, people will like this" and then see the hatefest. Oh well to each their own.

....and I have, and continue up will do so. Yea, cryptic has done goofed (recent patch, some peoples specialization points removed and what not) but who hasn't? I firmly believe that cryptic will rectify any mistakes they've made. Yea, delta rising wasn't as big of a deal as LoR with the release, though I really like it anyways

Take out the Star Trek and you still wouldn't find anything else out there like it. If you want to go frolicking with fairies and hobbits be my guest but it still doesn't even come close.
There's not a single person above me that has the right to say they can't recommend this game to a friend yet they are in a big hurry to slam it in the forums provided to you or in game.
No one forced you to level to 60, buy T6 ships, gear up to XIV, or anything else.
If you don't like it GTFO and find something else.
Regarding the above post from yesterday...
People actually do not have a choice but to level up to 60 because there is no option to cap your level to 50 as far as I am aware of. There is one way to cap yourself at level and that is to stop playing when you have reach that level.
As for the "right to say they can't recommend this game to a friend..." everyone has a right to express an opinion whether positive or negative about a product. At least in the US the right to express your opinion was part of the Bill of Right and has been incorporated into the Constitution as the First Amendment. Therefore freedom of speech is protected by the US Government as long as it does not lead to a hate crime. Expressing a negative opinion is a far cry from being equated as a hate crime.
If you believe people are not allowed to express an opinion about games, then I recommend you avoid reading game reviews articles or watching a game review video because in the end you are going to get an opinion of the game whether it is negative or positive.
As for the forum... The forum is a place to provide feedback and information. Many changes to the game (good or bad) has come from feedback. For example, many people have been complaining about ECs flooding the game's economy and causing inflation on certain item. The step Cryptic decided to take was to reduce the value of loot drops. Many people complained that the game was too easy especially the eSTFs. The outcome is pretty apparent in Delta Rising, the difficulty level has been increased in general and specifically in Advanced and Elite STFs. I read many responses of people who wanted much harder challenges... and many have more or less stated that they did not imagine it would be so nightmarish...
I'd have to disagree on the new player point though. It's still quite easy to sail through most of the content on normal and get to level 50 in a short amount of time. I've already seen level 60 toons all over the place and the expansion has barely been out over a week.
It's fairly easy to get up to level #50 I'll admit, but beyond that? It takes a lot of time.
I'm a casual player, always have been. Some weeks I'll hit it hard (though not too hard), and some weeks I'll barely play. People like me are never going to achieve a good enough build within a reasonable allocated time.
A reasonable build would be XII fleet gear (which costs dilithium and fleet credits - the latter needing to be earned through depositing dilithium, and energy credits) and the majority of the fleet equipment isn't cheap. Furthermore there is the rep gear (also expensive) and time consuming both to level up through it and then pay for the gear - taking into account that rewards have recently been reduced.
Most players need to tinker before they find the right builds too, and that also costs time and money.
As you can no doubt tell by now, for the casual player, the current system isn't very friendly to new players, or old/existing players with multiple characters.
Considering most F2P games outright bar you from progressing to level cap, and of course bar you from significant portions of content, I'd hardly call it 'insulting'.
Yes. Despite some naysayers, this game is a great game for a casual player like me. I'm having a ball with DR. No, I didn't have any specialization points removed, either, as I had never done any of the patrols more than once or twice since DR came. I'm having a lot of fun, and I'm as casual as they get, in a cruiser, not a tac bird with cannons, and I'm not having any trouble completing content solo, either.
For me, it's the investment I've already made, and that fact that I'm already involved. I've had time to work through the changes. Someone (a friend) starting afresh now (especially as a F2P) would have it ridiculously hard. ...and that would be on one character. The games' current setup is, quite frankly, insulting. I wouldn't want to insult my friends by directing them here.
Yea thatz very true unfortunately... I have 2 main toons and 2 fresh Level 50 but I think they will never be used cuz I can't be arsed to go through all of this again with them. Right now I m only using my tac anyway since my sci seems so useless against those HP monsters.....
Half my fleet is backing away "until things improve." Instead of a dozen of us playing nightly I'm happy to see more than 2. I'm not seeing a boycott, I'm seeing abandonment.
The FTP model is good, the art team is extremely talented, the story team is reasonably competent (they're better than the Voyager writers, at least, even though they leave gaping plot holes all over the place; I mean, they ADMIT that "Divide et Impera" sucks and have expressed the desire to fix it, that's got to count for something), the dev team occasionally listens to feedback, and customer support has always been swift in response and extremely helpful to me.
Plus I've made a lot of friends here.
Compared to WoW, EVE, and SWTOR, this game is like the platinum standard.
Definately not, the casual player simply cant play all content or gain all rewards/upgrades-i wont even talk about pvp as gekko has definately killed it now-sto is now like a second job which has caused 95% of my fleet to leave the game id love to see what in sto is making money if long time players are leaving
I would and do. Best F2P model I've seen, good gameplay format, great customization, and its still very lively.
Bipedal mammal and senior Foundry author.
Notable missions: Apex [AEI], Gemini [SSF], Trident [AEI], Evolution's Smile [SSF], Transcendence
Looking for something new to play? I've started building Foundry missions again in visual novel form!
I had done so in the past but since DR I'm more likely to warn them off.
Cash shop model isnt the worst but the likes of lotro is better, with regular weekly sales and freebies. That said as f2p models go it's not that bad. Miles better than SWTOR where you lose access to most of the game if you dare to unsub.
The main issue is the amount of grind thats now been added into the process of levelling rather than just for reps, comparing the minimal rewards for the time you spend getting them it is just dire.
At one time i shared every season on facebook but i stopped that just after LoR coming out.
The reason i started playing this game is because its star trek.
The reason i stayed was because of the story and it was not a massive grind game.
I liked it for them reasons so i payed for 2000 zen a mth but i stopped as they just kept adding more grinds to the game. All so i realised that they was starting a massive long line of nerfs.
I would never recommend STO to any one nowadays the devs just wont to turn this game in to every othet one a massive grind.

It's as free of a "F2P" online game as I've ever seen. It's fun (*still fun). If they hate it then... oh well. Just uninstall it.
I'd sooner recommend this game than a $60 retail game without a demo because if they hate that then I might feel guilty that they wasted their money.
