Giving away, or even earning the ships after the event is over is something I don't think they will do. As said above they changed the currency method to avoid this very thing. One of the most fun things to do is walk around the Defera invasion zone with a holoemitter of a Borg drone. If they should do anything it is take away the holo effect. The blue lines that phase every once and a while. But there are do many more ships out there that a new selection would be nice.

The explanation in the shows is incredibly vague with many theories expounded from the little information pasted on the internet. I am curious the difference on each mission as well as how the limitations of the foundry will impact the game play. This will be a good one. One I will have to ponder.:D

There are plenty of problems I see with the floaters. The limitations the author would need to place on the player would be numerous. First I see is texturing. Neelix has a chance for redemption here. His character was pretty flat in the show. A filler basically when things needed to get done.
