Where would you like the game to go in 2024?

vetteguy904vetteguy904 Member Posts: 3,857 Arc User
I'd like to see a bit more work on ground mechanics. I think melee still needs some fine tuning. some weapons let you close from a short distance but I don't think all do.

I'd like to see an experiment done with a lock box ship. put the ship in the lock box with all the bells and whistles, but put a "stripped" version in the C-store, no consoles, no gimmicks.. if possible maybe even without the the dual spec seating (since most seem to have that now) just once to see how the revenue works out.

finally, I'd like to see a period of no OMG the Galaxy is ending. let just take care of business for a while, Save the X planet from the volcano erupting, patrol this star group from pirates, maybe each mission drops a clue to where the base is. something like that.

What to you have?

Story-wise, yes it would be nice to have lower stake episodes and arcs.

I mostly hope that they're going to think of veteran players a bit more when they release a new bundle. Meaning either discounts for players that have already unlocked certain items in bundles, and giving options to make existing ships account-wide unlocks instead of being expected to buy the same, very expensive product again. The (L)-Inquiry release was a clear example of how not to do things.

Besides that, I'm also hoping for a bit more uniqueness added for the various existing species, as well as new ones being added.

A few new species-specific traits for example. Preferably ones that you actually notice, like the increased jump heigth from the Caitians. It's nice that my Andorian for example has some improved stats through cold dwelling, but you don't really notice these things while playing.

More environments for these species (revamped Andoria, a city on Vulcan, adding of planets like Betazed en Tellar) and new civilian clothing for different species would be nice too (we now basically only have Talaxian, Seven's and regular human formal outfits).

I know it's unlikely to happen, but these are things I'd consider experience-enhancing. Moreso than yet another TFO or ship, as fun as those can be for a while.

I get that it takes 6months + for ideas to get included into development then another 6 to maybe be included, but if you don't ask, it will never happen.

I used to suggest things here but I guess I have that luck because I got accused of "splitting hairs" for providing the reasons for the suggestion. Not saying no one submit or offer suggestions but don't be too surprised if you get that response. By the way, it wasn't a forum poster or a cryptic employee.

that's why my suggestions are sweeping. I really don't care if future missions are towing rocks away from a planet or setting up schools for the planet, I am just tired of the bad guy of the year ready to end everything.

That has become very tiresome in the last several years...for an IP that has decades of Stories around, it acts if it has a limited window.

I'd love some lower stakes storylines too, you get tired of everything constantly being at the grand scale, have a few storylines where the stakes are lower and the next big thing will feel much more epic as you had contrast of the galaxy at what's more or less "normal"

Maybe revisit some planets from TOS Olympus and Gangster planets specifically, maybe add in Species from other Star Trek stuff like Lyrans, Miraks, Ruddy Orions (Orange Orions), Grey Orions, Kobliads, Hotaris and Alydians (the Squidward Race).

I'd like some expansion of available maps. We've retreaded the corridor Voyager cut through Delta Quad, but now that we have supply lines back to Alpha/Beta, we can explore that entire quarter of the galaxy. Maybe some more of Gamma as well, although I'd understand if the devs want to wait on that until they feel we've sufficiently pacified the Founders (whose empire, after all, lies just the other side of the wormhole).

I don't know if the Lyrans can be added due to their connection with the old FASA Starfleet Battles. While we can bring in ships from other games as long as Cryptic rebuilds the models themselves from scratch, races might be another issue. The Mirak were created because Interplay couldn't adapt the Kzinti from Starfleet Battles at the time. And technically speaking we already have an analog in the form of the Ferasans. And the Kzinti themselves would be even MORE of a mess. Although I do admit seeing one on Lower Decks may mean that Larry Niven's lightened up on the Kzinti, but I do not know for sure.

Well, I'm expecting it to be a year of transition as the game transfers over to Deca's management. My hope is that we don't see the resurgence of old bugs like loadout breaking and procs being reversed(hitting you instead of mobs), etc.

Content wise, I'd love to see effort be put back into more sandbox style efforts like refreshing the battlezones to be more enjoyable places to engage with.

I'd love to see them take a pass at the Reputations, clean up the romulan reinforcement beacons into reuseable devices; add hangar pets/secondary deflectors/experimental weapons to every reputation. Clean up/revise the reputation dilithium stores.

For Lockboxes, I'd love to see them go through and condense a lot of the random, inventory bloating packs into more universal packs with options to select what you want from them. Additionally, I'd like to see a number of the very old lockbox ships be retired to the Lobi store and the oldest lockbox weapons(like voth and undine anti-proton) be added as drops to mob encounter groups(Advanced+ difficulty).

    For ships:
Legendary Jem Hadar Dreadnought Carrier; Legendary Galor.
Otherwise, I'd like to see each faction get a ship that is long overdue. T6 Vulcan D'kyr, Jem Hadar Scout Vessel(with secondary deflector), Reman Flight Deck Carrier with frigates?, Ferasian Science Dreadnought.
I also seriously hope the 14th anniversary bundle is more than only Federation ships...

STO would have a better chance of getting FASA stuff in the game than getting Star Fleet Battles stuff since FASA's license was from Paramount but SFB's was from Franz Joseph Designs. Those two sources are completely independent of each other and mixing different license lines is rarely a good idea.

In this case, I think it would be better to make it possible to do more of the canon races (they have barely scratched the surface on that even with all 'Alien' tab parts) than to deal with licensing hassles to bring in races unique to other Trek games. For instance, every try making an Ithenite? The costume exists but not the copper skin color, and a lot of the other races from the other various series just take a minor latex appliance to do, and color and detail bits like that would be trivial to make compared to developing races from other games from scratch.

Of course, the Federation is in the best shape of the available factions when it comes to choices for race, the rest have far fewer (in fact one of them has no choice at all) and those could use additions more than the Feds at the moment.

I second the OP's suggestion about polishing up ground combat, and it can be done without any major engine changes and whatnot since J'Ula's mek'leths already have the animations and automatic closing that are so sorely needed to make melee weapons in the game actually fun to use.

I am all for mixing in random, independent, lower-stakes missions too; to paraphrase Syndrome in The Incredibles, when every mission is special, none of them are. For example, one of the biggest problems DSC has in generating interest (besides generally pissing off serious sci-fi fans with silly nonsense like the Gringotts's style turbolifts) is that their one-story-per-season serial format means anything they show is almost guaranteed to be part of the season's inevitably apocalyptic plot, and that kills the sense of mystery. In a less linear format any odd thing could be foreshadowing something else down the road so people pay more attention.

In the Hollywood crowd, Straczynski has the best grasp of how to best do arc-format shows. Boiled down, the key is to mix independent, arc, and forshadowing stories so that the fans never know for sure when something is significant until the next part drops (a technique known as veiled foreshadowing) which cranks up the amount of interest as the fans try to spot the possible connections and speculate on what it all means (and as an added benefit, often talk about their theories on social sites which gets other people curious about the show which in turn increases viewership).

A related issue I would like to see resolved is the excessive use of the "holodeck mission". Sure, a few are good and make sense sometimes, like Khonshu Khaibit and Jupiter Gauntlet patrols, but for the most part the concept just falls flat. As I said in another thread, one way to do that without sacrificing a lot of story and tie-in potential is to leverage the current arc to set up 'copies' of the various eras in parallel with the STO main timeline and eliminate a lot of the paradox problems that time travel adds to the mix.

And there is a whole subgenre of science fiction that deals with that kind setup (Andre Norton's Crosstime novels are a good example but there are many more) so it is not anything unique that might cause copyright issues. As an added benefit, it would also allow the devs to get more use out of resources currently only seen in time agent tutorials like the Temporal Recruitment and DSC ones, as well as those resources in Spectres.

I too would like to see a gradual opening up of maps, for instance I have suggested several times that there is a lot of potential in the First Federation territory (in The Corbomite Maneuver it was clear that it was definitely more than just one or two worlds in size), and the V'ger arc showed that the barriers between universes was thin enough in (at the very least) one part of their territory to make crossing easier which would dovetail well with the current arc. Or perhaps the Sphere Builders could make an attempt to capitalize on that thinning to try and make another Expanse, or any number of other plots there (or for that matter it could be the center of a lot of low-key missions).

It's true that Delta would be good to expand, there are a lot of hints about what is out there buried in VOY dialog, and those hints are vague enough for a wide range of interpretations, and also the Mirror Borg could make a try at assimilating the fragmented Borg groups out there which could fill an entire arc in itself.

Gamma might be a problem though since if you take Weyoun's statements at face value (he was a disinformation specialist, so they are questionable at best) like the devs apparently do judging by their comments in the past, then there is really nothing to do out there. The picture Weyoun paints of the Dominion is a vast benevolent empire that takes up the whole quadrant more or less, where everyone knows their place and works together in harmony, and any little islands of Dominion protectorates dotted around rarely make trouble as they go about their quaint little affairs.

Of course, DS9 shows little of that to be true, PIC implies that they are fragmented by the time of that limited series, and (probably unconsidered) implications of what the ViL arc features (including the unbelievably lopsided organization of Odo's expeditionary force), but especially
the kind of outrage that would have erupted when the flimflams the Dominion has long perpetrated on the other Gamma factions were revealed during the recent Hurq war
give the impression that the Dominion is probably in very dire straits, and that could make for some very interesting plot possibilities if the devs ever decided to go that way.

More Canon races, So like the Chalchaj'Qmey (fancy name for Romulan-Klingon Hybrids), I mean we Canonically had one on the TNG episode "Birthright II" and their ships would basically be Temer classes and Shrikes, maybe even throw in a few kitbashes between the 2.

To the question in the title of this thread, did you play Half-Life Opposing Force? Remember that one scene in the helicopter at the very beginning? Where the big guy with the SAW asks where are we, and the platoon smart-a** replies, "well, the pilot
    thought we were heading to..."

Just recently began playing. As others have said, I like the "little" missions, too. Going to any system and having a job to perform, whether it be repairing a freighter, driving off adversaries, scanning curious plants on the surface, etc. I really enjoy the randomness and not being required to save the doggone galaxy though I understand that a lot of time and effort has been put into creating good storylines.

Here is a thought, They could assign a Space Faring currency for planetary off trading say with either the crafting system or out right Trade with a type of planetary Economy, so my thoughts would be add more ships to include Cargo bays Larger slow ships that add freighting economics to each planet, you would thusly take your crafted phaser banks and trade them for say Earl Grey Tea which could introduce a schematic to your replicators for a additional crafting tree. So lets say you milk a systems economy where it becomes saturated you would then need to find a new planet economy to trade between. There could also be a contraband trading such and not limited the Romulan ale and rare items such as kirks uniform without any rips in it.

But here would be the implimitation of the Trade space currency. It could be used to Fork the purchases of Zen along side the Dilithium market to off set the extraordinary exchange of dil to zen. Yes we have had a story arcs for the inception of them. Why not let people Have a Full Blown expansion we actually Pay for to help the games development of new content? I totally love that this game isa free game, but i do love the game and would love to support a Dedicated Update Expansion, lets face it, if we got a huge update that consists of a massive expansion to update the 14 year old dynamics of graphics, and game mechanics, That is worth to me at least spending $20-$50 for a full blown expansion of the game.

I'd like to see a complete revamp of the Player vs. Player part of the game. Something which would not be an afterthought like what we have now. Something which has better maps. Something where skill and experience matter more than money...

Less is more: Don't constantly do something new, but rather maintain what's already there (bug elimination)! It would be a shame if STO failed due to rapid growth, as others have failed due to growth. For example remember spring 2023: for many weeks "invalidentidyname"...

STO is fully capable of doing both Bug Fixing and new development. Its not an Either/Or situation. And Bug Hunting is not as easy as you think. Its not a case of "Oh this isn't working right. I'mma gonna flip this switch and problem solved!" No. Its "dear got what bits of code in god knows how many lines of code isn't playing well with each other?"

Bug Hunting takes time. Think of it like looking through a full novel for a single typo or misplaced punctuation mark. Then multiply that by the age of the game at least.

I agree with you. Especially the not so simple things require a lot of attention, time and manpower...
