STO's next expansion

fleetcaptain5#1134 fleetcaptain5 Member Posts: 5,051 Arc User
A couple of minutes ago, there was a leak of new content on STO's Twitter account (@trekonlinegame). As the Tweet has since been deleted, it's not entirely clear whether this expansion is actually still coming next Tuesday or at a later time - or if they're just postponing the announcement.

Either way, thanks to Twitter's increased maximum character count, we now know some things about this expansion already. And yes, that includes the arrival of many new characters in STO.

A summary:

- Biggest expansion for STO ever, bigger than New Romulus and Delta Rising combined
- Opens up the Andromeda galaxy, containing four new quadrants
- Map is as big as what we have now and contains just as many patrols and systems
- Also has new, revamped exploration clusters. Milky Way clusters to be added later
- 47 new ships, including new, 'exciting' mechanics
- Secondary warp cores and broadside weapon slots given as examples
- Three new featured episode arcs upon launch.
- One of them deals with the 'Kelvins' (though this is probably a spelling error and should be 'Kelvans')

The first tweet attached to it confirmed:

- New characters, new playable 'species' and new mechanisms coming
- These include: Han Solo, the Robinsons and the Robot
- Beltalowda mini-faction
- New lifetime perk: play as an Protomolecule
- Voice-overs by Jared Harris, Mark Hamill and Maxwell Jenkins amongst others
- Picard, Sisko, Hikaru Sulu and Archer will be added, voiced by their original performers

_____

There were more tweets announcing even more new things to look forward to, while also explaining that this is what they have been working on in secret - work that was then boosted by a big fundraiser provided for by Gearbox after the merger - but unfortunately I wasn't fast enough to capture the essence of these other tweets beyond this explanation.

Ya do realise what day it is don't you!?
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

Nice try, although I really wanted my Mon Calamari Command Cruiser.
It would have to have ten weapon slots and twenty consoles.
The trait could be "Wary of Traps," which gives perfect perception and detects all cloaked ships within the map.

A Star Wars-themed bundle would make a great April Fool's joke.

I mean, we do. But it's very little. 🤷‍♀️

Andromeda? We've barely gotten into the Delta Quadrant! (Remember that the Voyager only went down a corridor of the quadrant, and there's a lot of space out there...)

One of the Dyson Spheres, I believe, is in Andromeda. At least at first.

One of the Dyson Spheres, I believe, is in Andromeda. At least at first.

Which could imply that there are Iconian Gateways in Andromeda.

Didn't they outright state that Andromeda was where the Iconians had been hiding and the "hub" sphere we fight in during that one TFO was also there?

But seriously, STO should have some Andromeda content.

As long as it's Lexa Doig not Kevin Sorbo, he's gone coo-coo for cocoa puffs.

But seriously, I'm still waiting for the playable Horta captains that Trendy promised us years ago, "No Kill I !"

Congrats, OP! I read the entire first post and was at the end when I looked at the date and then said, 'waitwhat?'
Thanks for the laugh. At myself of course. Ya got me. Completely. Well played, Sir/Madam! Well played, indeed.

They didn't outright say where the Iconians were, but it was implied that it was in one of their subspace pockets. Other hand, when you activate the gateways, it's outright stated that gateways in Andromeda are also activated. If we were to go there, it would be by way of those gates, one would suppose.

Then we find out if the Kelvans were right about there being some sort of galactic disaster there, or if it was more localized and they put as much forethought into that as they did into attempting to return aboard the Enterprise. Be a hell of a note if you went through a gateway and emerged into an ongoing galactic-scale hypernova event. Kind of like fast-traveling in Fallout 76 and arriving at your destination at the same moment a nuke strikes. (Which has happened to me twice now, because the arrival point in that game isn't really terribly precise and travel times can vary by several seconds.)

The Iconians were definitely in Andromeda, at least just prior to them jumping their gate hub sphere to Iconia, as Sela mentions that the player and herself (and Taris too) are in the Andromeda galaxy while aboard said sphere.

I have to agree with Jonsils on this one, while Andromeda would be nice it would be better to flesh out the current maps more. It isn't just Delta that is underutilized (though it has the most potential for a wide variety of stuff), there is also Gamma and even the northeast quadrant of Alpha that have room for more missions/races/whatever.
