**AUGUST DEVELOPER Q&A THREAD**

ambassadorkael#6946 ambassadorkael Member, Administrator Posts: 2,679 Community Manager
You can find the answers to July's questions right here!

https://account.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline/#/discussion/1267846/july-developer-q-a-thread-answers

We realize that our forum community is diverse and spread across the globe, and that not everyone has an opportunity to take part in directly communicating with the developers via livestream. In an effort to extend communications between the forum community and the STO development team, we present the “Ask the Devs” Q&A thread!

Until the end of August, questions will be collected in this thread and then presented to our Community Manager. Questions will then be selected and answered right here on the forums.

Have a question concerning Star Trek Online?

Maybe you’d like some tips and tricks with certain gameplay elements? Or questions related to how the game is developed?

Let us know here!

Please note: If your question did not get answered in a previous thread, you may post it again, but it's unlikely it was missed. There is a probable reason the developers can't answer it. You may also use this thread to ask follow up questions from the previous thread, but please make new threads if you want to discuss the answers in detail.

Quick note: A question of "when are we getting [X item I'd like]" or something that is a full on suggestion rather than a question is less likely to be answered, with the "when is [X item]" questions unlikely to be answered at all. Thanks!

I have a question i have wanted to raise for quite some time concerning Accolades.
Over the last year or so i have only noticed perhaps a couple new accolades along the way.
(Met Janeway - 10 points) (Met Madran - 10 points).
Now there have been a few missions added over the last 2 years alone with no inclusion of accolades along the way, have the devs given up including them or feel that there are so many in game for most to achieve that they are not bothering with them so much anymore ???

Nice! I agree with Jesse. The Iconian war is one of my favorite arcs. It is epicly paced, and really feels like the culmination of the game’s story. Considering the DSC Iconian reference too—the STO Iconian War is already on the writer’s radar, perhaps.

Ian Castaneda said, “Alien body parts are a challenge because it requires quite a lot of time from a very small Character Team.”

Not sure why the character team is capitalized here. But I guess that also explains why the tailor glitches are often left unresolved. As with everything, all of the development is tied into preparing the new missions and rewards. So although it would be nice if they could do more Barbie models for us. It makes sense at least why they don’t.
Additionally, quotation attributions should use em dashes not hyphens.

Thanks for the great answers! I really appreciate your looking at our questions.

As a follow-up question about the "Availible" tab, would it be possible to have the level 65 requirement changed on a per-arc basis?

Specifically, originally Spectres was perfectly positioned in early midgame for TOS characters to get the extra TOS weapons they need to fill the hardpoints that open up as they progress. Leaving it to K-13 and lockboxes just does not work for everyone, not everyone can afford the price of TOS style ship weapons on the exchange, and the K-13 ship phasers are all Mk. XII which means they are unusable until well after those hardpoints need to be filled.

And with the changes to how the tutorials work concerning transferring items and funds to close off that old exploit it means that there is usually not enough EC to get enough of the ship phasers to get to where Mk. XII is usable. Of course, lowering the minimum tier of those weapons would also work but it would probably complicate the way the fleet store works (and there are a lot of people who either are not in a fleet or are in bad ones who cannot even get them at all).

On top of that, the context that is a big part of the feel of Spectres is lost if the first exposure to it is at endgame.

A related question: would it be possible to make it so that characters craft the normal weapons of the style of their particular subfaction by default? For example, the AoY characters would craft TOS style (where those items existed in TOS), the 2409 characters would craft the (orange in the case of phasers) TNG style, DSC characters would craft the DSC style, etc.?

Thank you for continuing to do this Kael, and thank you to the devs for taking the time to answer our questions! Now, my question for this month:

Are you able to clarify the criteria for Legendary ship releases, even if that clarification is to fallback on something more vague like "ships we feel are a good fit"? I ask because conflicting things have been said on the weekly livestream since the 10th Anniversary bundle introduced the concept: first it was said that ships that carried a movie or episode qualified, then last summer Bort mentioned that a ship needed "at least two" existing variants to qualify, and now more recently Kael said that a ship needed four variants to qualify.

I realize things are subject to change, but the seemingly constant movement of the goalposts takes a lot of the fun out of trying to predict future releases. It also causes some confusion because each stated criteria has been broken at least once: the Disco Connie and JJPrise only had one existing variant when their Legendaries were released, and the Vesta has never been shown or mentioned on-screen so it's currently non-canon. Truthfully I think I would prefer more vague criteria going forward, but any insight at all would be appreciated.

There are 3 vanity slots for shields, engines, and deflectors, but we have only ever gotten vanity shields. Is there a reason vanity engines and vanity deflectors don’t exist in the game?

What were the results of looking into changing beam colors? (The old RGB-only change feature that was available during the STO beta, that CBS ruled against at that time.)

I understand that changing full visuals is too much work, but being able to unify the base RGB value for a ship would let me play with more reputation, lobi and lockbox gear without having for example 5 red beams + 1 green beam sticking out like a sore thumb.

Also, this would only be for the beams on our own ship, we don't want to mess up other player's visuals just to fix our own.

Space Barbie is the true endgame, so this is important!

    I have three questions.

I'm putting this one in here and the bug section, just in case it is a bug. Please can the team look at the Antialiasing on consoles (Xbox One S/X), especially the levels in space, as the image of the ships looks like there is little to no antialiasing on them.....and before any 'it's a console limitation' comment comes, it's not. Another game of similar age (Phantasy Star Online 2) I play has antialiasing options, which are the same as PC STO, and it runs them all fine.

In relation to the above, can we also have more graphics options on Console to tailor things. The consoles can more than cope with STO's engine.

Third question, is there a chance that Hanger Pet deployment options can be implemented on Console too....please?
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

Visual Spam has now got to the point where parts of the game are near unplayable. When players say visual spam is out of control this is what they mean. This was from the recent No Win Space Event TFO and this 2nd screenshot is from a ground Event TFO a while back that pretty much had the entire boss fight just a white screen. (For clarity this isn't from the Beacon effect and the graphic effects like Bloom Intensity are on default)

Are the devs aware Visual Spam has got this bad?

Well, I can tell you that they are aware and it's being discussed. There's an official stickied thread right here in General Discussion about that very issue.

There is?....interesting, those sticky threads haven't been showing up. I assume because I don’t trend to go into individual sections instead relaying on Recent Discussions. Which shows other sticky threads like STO Tribble Access but not the VFX Thread. I wonder what other sticky posts I have missed. I thought because other sticky threads showed in Recent Discussion all of them did. Thanks

Have you considered consoles for Carriers (though not limited to Carriers) Consoles to boost Hangar Pets, perhaps something that adds to hangar pet hit points or damage. Perhaps like other Space MMO's do with Tactical consoles to boost pet damage and Engineer consoles to boost pet defence. The sacrifice of using these consoles would be losing Tactical consoles that boost main weapons.

I would actually like to expand on this as while I understand that creating new assets is time consuming. What about moving already existing assets into the creator? Like Gorn eyes or Caitian/Ferasan parts? (This is mainly aimed at Ian.)

3 questions asked before and not addressed

Will full carriers get a pass to bring them on par with virtually every other class in game?

will Omega, nukara romulan reps get warp cores and singularity cores?

    can we have pet tabs?

you won't see kitty parts in the alien gen because they are pay for species. that's been said a hundred times.

If it can be shared, is Gearbox putting anything into Cryptic as far as warm coders into the group?

oh, and for the existing devs:

With the recent alliance vanity shield and uniforms I started looking into the alliance ships and realized they had been the 10, 11 and 12th anniversay rewards which I missed having started playing around July. So since the only alliance ships were all promotion ones I'm wondering if there's any chance they'll be released in mudds store, phoenix store, other at some point in the future or at least another alliance ship made available?

I'm especially interested in the Jarok as I can see the link from there to the temporal dreadnaught cruiser. Slice off the lower hull, mount some klingon disrupter cannons at the ends of the new hulll and replace the neck/saucer with a yorktown/odyssey style chevron. Fast forward a few centuries make the hull narrower, remove the cannons, add the temporal design patterns and there you are the Jarok science carrier has become the temporal dreadnaught. Still I'll take any alliance ship.

To be clear and that I did read your post at the start of this thread, I'm wondering less "when" and more "If". Still very close I know but I'd just like to know if you have any plans to release more alliance ships in the future in any manner. Whether that's putting the previous event ones in the game again or new designs going forward.

They do exist I have a sol engine that modifies them to a more fire effect in the visual slot and I know there are other ones that alter engines/deflectors. I'm working on a reputation deflector to give a blue glow effect. On the other hand if you mean why are they not given away in vanity form ignore my response.

Sorry for so many questions in one post, but they all seem pretty well related.

When a player makes a suggestion how thorough should they be?

Should they focus on the order of operations from the perspective of the player interacting with the game?

Should they focus on how they imagine a system works 'behind the scenes?'

Would it be helpful for the Developers if there were something akin to checklist that the Suggestive Player might use to communicate their idea more effectively?

    Hi Kael,

This month, I have some questions about shuttlecraft.

Three years ago, our resident shipwright Thomas Marrone posted a Jayce’s Navy Interstellar article for the Pathfinder-class starship. On page 60, the ship’s shuttle compliment is said to include the Type 11 shuttlecraft from Star Trek Insurrection. Given that this shuttle is shown alongside its Type 8 counterparts, I was wondering if there’s a reason it has never made its way into the game?

In that same vein, are we likely to ever see other prominently featured shuttles such as the Galileo 5 from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the Type 6 from Star Trek The Next Generation or the Type 9/Class 2 from Star Trek Voyager in the game?

Finally, with the release of Operation Wolf, the Danube-class runabout received a new model that is yet to make its way to the playable models. Are our shuttles likely to undergo the same remodelling process as the starships, as the disparity in detail is becoming very noticeable, especially when compared to the Class C shuttlecraft from Star Trek Discovery?

    Many Thanks.

Is there any chance that we can have our coloured shields back? The 'updated' that was implemented to the 'white' effect is really poor quality compared to the old factional colours.
